Welcome Year 7
After saying goodbye to family at the school gates on their first day, Year 7 were presented with their stationery packs and guided into their Home Room groups by our senior school leaders, where they met their Home Room teacher.
After a tour of the school with the Year 11 and 12 students in their Home Room, Year 7 spent the remainder of the day with their Core teachers and classmates, playing games, making new friends, and familiarising themselves with our school expectations.
Over the next few days, they received their new laptops, had their photographs taken for their student ID cards and will master the art of opening their lockers. This Friday is our school Swimming Carnival, I hope all boys will join with enthusiasm and cheer on their school house.
I have heard countless accounts of positive feedback from teachers about how seamless Year 7’s transition has been. The St Edward’s community looks forward to learning about each new Eddie’s boy, and we wish them all the success for the remainder of the year. Congratulations boys, great start!

Justice, Peace and Advocacy – Waterford Service Program
Welcome back for another fantastic year of giving back to our local community through the Waterford Service Learning Program.
The vision of St Edward’s College as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition requires us to seek justice and compassion for others and give a voice to the voiceless. The Waterford Service-Learning Program is a vital part of this vision and permeates throughout the whole school curriculum.
The College has been conducting this mandatory Social Justice program for over 20 years. Each student in Years 8-11 is required to complete at least 15 hours of service for others, by the end of Term 3. Their completed log sheet will be submitted to Canvas.
Students in Year 7 are exempt from this, allowing them time to settle into College life, but they are welcome to participate if they choose. Similarly, Year 12 students are also exempt from Waterford to allow them to focus on study and other matters, however they are encouraged to continue the Service Learning (and perhaps Edmund Rice Honours) they engaged in Years 8 to 11.
Your son is encouraged to reach 100 hours of service, and for this he will receive an award titled ‘Edmund Rice Honours’ for his dedication to helping others, especially the disadvantaged.
The Waterford Service-Learning Program provides opportunities for all secondary students to become involved in a wide range of volunteer activities, catering for different age groups. It allows them to experience the joy of giving and sharing with others and provides a unique learning experience that goes beyond the classroom and school environment, where students can reflect upon their own values and beliefs and develop their character through the act of service. The opportunity and requirement to reflect and give meaning to their service experience are critical to the success of the program.
Throughout 2024 there will be many opportunities for students to receive Waterford hours by assisting and participating in school events. These will be announced in the Daily Notices. Additionally, we are collating a College wide list of the activities that students can be involved in or regularly complete each year to receive Waterford hours, so please send any and all ideas to Mr Rozario.
The College is also conducting Founder’s Day activities this year in Term 3, which is a day of fun and interactive activities to raise funds for the Edmund Rice ministries we support, including the Kenya Christian Brothers Ministry for young people and families living in poverty.
Additionally, we are planning a number of events throughout the year that will draw attention to injustices within our society, call for action from our community, and will focus on student wellbeing.

Literacy 2024
2023 presented many great Literacy successes across all year groups at St Edwards. The overall reading and comprehension of the students was enhanced following various teaching and learning approaches. The goal for 2024, is to continue developing comprehension strategies with a significant focus on Year 7 and 8.
Working in conjunction with the library, Year 7 and 8 will have fortnightly reading lessons. The purpose of these lessons is to further encourage students to actively read and develop their awareness of the varied writing styles and structures, whilst additionally broadening their vocabulary. Additionally, there will be allocated fortnightly literacy lessons in Year 7. These lessons will focus on six specific comprehension strategies. These include:
Making connections (text to text, text to self and text to world)
Making and revising predictions
Questioning
Summarising
Determining the most important ideas
Making inferences
Throughout these lessons, students will have the opportunity to read with purpose, deconstruct writing and make meaning of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Following explicit teaching of reading strategies, students will gradually move to guided writing tasks.
Following various diagnostic testing such as PAT reading, we have identified the continuous need for library reading lessons as well as integrating subject-specific spelling lists into all subject classes. Additionally, in Term 4 there will be weekly literacy lessons that focus on grammar, punctuation and spelling.
During Term 1, Year 9 students will explicitly focus on spelling, grammar and comprehension. This leads into their NAPLAN testing. Additionally, Year 9 will continue working on Education Perfect to consolidate their literacy skills.
Across Year 7 – 10, there will be a continued focus on TEEL paragraph writing. This scaffold will be explicitly modelled across all subject areas so to strengthen writing and analysis. Specifically, there will be exemplar responses provided for each assessment task across Stage 4. These will be explicitly taught, decoding not only why it is effective, but how it is effective. By providing students with a detailed model of success, we are aiming to provide the students with greater opportunity for both academic success and confidence in their writing ability.
We here at the College have an exciting year ahead of us. One where we will be fostering confidence and personal growth within teaching and learning. These successes will be visual for all students as they will be able to track their progress through pre, mid and post-testing so to see the growth in their learning.

Health4life Initiative
In 2019 our Year 7 PDHPE students took part in a study run by Sydney University, the ’Health4life Initiative’.
Health4Life is the first eHealth program to concurrently target the 'Big 6' health behaviours to prevent chronic disease risk among adolescents, including physical activity, healthy eating, limiting sedentary recreational screen time, getting the right amount of sleep, and avoiding alcohol use and smoking. The program consists of three components:
Online school-based program (6x20 minute cartoon-based modules and additional class activities);
Companion smartphone app;
Additional app content for youth most at risk of chronic disease, delivered 12- and 24-months after the initial intervention.
The following health promotion is a continuation of the study.

2024 College Swimming Carnival
2024 College Swimming Carnival
As advertised in the annual calendar, we will be conducting our swimming carnival on Friday 9 February at the Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy.
Information regarding the carnival will be communicated to the boys at the first assembly of the 2024 school year on Friday week 1. Below are some important practical details regarding the carnival:
Transport
Normal school buses will run in the morning / afternoon and students will catch a bus from the College to the pool and back again in the afternoon.
Other students may make their own way to the carnival if appropriate. All boys making their own way to the carnival need to be at the pool by 8.45am, unless they are competing in the 200m events (see next point).
Any student competing in 200m events need to be at the pool by 8.30 am at the very latest. Buses will not be at the pool by 8.30 am so these students will need to make their own transport arrangements.
All students requiring afternoon bus transport will return by bus to the College and catch the afternoon school buses under supervision as normal.
Uniform
For identification purposes, it is imperative that all students in Years 7 – 10 attend the carnival in their College sports uniform as they would do on a normal Friday. They can change into their colour house clothes at the pool. Only Years 11 and 12 are allowed to wear mufti/casual clothing.
General Directions
As maximum participation is the aim of the day, points will be allocated for every student entering an event. Any boy who attends the carnival is required to participate by:
Swimming in all events appropriate to his ability level;
Assisting teaching staff in conducting the carnival in some capacity ie: official duties;
For supervision purposes when boys are not in races, they are to remain in the stands grouped according to their age divisions. Only the Years 10,11 and 12 will be permitted to gather on the grassed area.
Boys need to be equally prepared for cool or warmer weather and bring appropriate sun protection ie sunscreen, as the marshalling area is outdoors.
Limited canteen facilities will be available – boys are encouraged to bring their own food & drink for the day.
It is imperative that students do not bring large sums of money or valuable equipment such as airpods etc. In these situations, it is impossible for the College to take responsibility for items that may go missing.
As the carnival is held indoors, it will be held even in the event of obvious inclement weather.
Boys who live locally or who are being picked up by their parents can leave to go home directly from the pool at the conclusion of the carnival, which should be at 2.15 pm. No boy will be permitted to leave the pool precinct prior to the conclusion of the carnival, as rolls need to be marked and the usual important formalities carried out. I particularly ask that we have parental co-operation in this matter.
Parents, carers and relatives are more than welcome to attend on the day however it is recommended you bring your own chair as seating is at a premium.
The College Prefects and Leaders will be required at the pool early in the day to assist with carnival set up and again at the end of the day to assist with packing up of the carnival.
The co-operation of boys and their families with these guidelines will ensure that it is an enjoyable day for all in attendance.

College Principal

Yadhaba Online – Wellbeing Resources
Welcome to Yadhaba Online
As the school year commences, I wanted to offer a warm welcome to all our students and their families, both new and returning to the St Edward’s community. We know that student wellbeing is one of the key considerations families have when choosing a school. At St Edward’s we prioritise the wellbeing of each student, with dedicated spaces, teachers and programs to ensure every boy can feel safe, happy and included. This year we also want to offer resources each week for families to assist them as they raise boys in a challenging time for adolescents. The list attached offers a range of mental health and wellbeing services on the Central Coast. You may wish to save this resource for when it may be needed.
Each week, members of the St Edward’s Pastoral Team, including our experienced counsellors and Pastoral Leaders, will be offering guidance and resources to assist families as our boys navigate high school. We invite you to take the time each week to explore Yadhaba Online for articles that may be helpful. We look forward to seeing this digital resource grow over the coming months.
