Movember 2019
Every November, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world.
The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male mental health.
Our Prefects are leading the way this year for St Edward's College and have invited staff and students to join their team.
You can support the St Edward's College team by making a donation via the link below. All funds raised through our 10c Return and Earn Scheme will also be donated to this worthy cause, so fill up those Enviro Bags and put all recyclable containers in the specially marked bins around the College.

This was Bishop Anthony’s first Mass in our diocese. All schools from the Diocese were in attendance to acknowledge the great work Catholic Mission does to raising awareness and money for disadvantaged communities all over the world. Kenya ‘Kesheni’ Immersion
At the end of an exhausting Term 3, Mr Mark Bonnici, Mrs Meagan Armstrong, Joseph Hussein, Daniel Pearce, Jackson Robb, Kai Darwin, Aaron Judd, Aidan Davis, Joshua Armstrong and I all substituted a “once in a lifetime” adventure for our normal school break. This was our school’s annual trip to Kenya to experience the amazing culture and people of this diverse land.Enter leader text here
Kesheni is Swahili for “Stay Awake” and this is the hope for not only our team, but all who we now encounter. That is, to stay awake and aware of the plight of millions of our Kenyan brothers and sisters who live in abject poverty in the Kibera and Makuru slums, both located in Kenya’s capital Nairobi. The good news is, that there is a growing level of hope that strategies in place are making a difference. Our school makes an annual contribution to The Mary Rice Centre, located on the periphery of the Kibera slum. We were privileged to see and experience the great work being done by the locals. The school caters for the most marginalised of children, coming not only from the slum, but also with profound intellectual disabilities. Deep-set cultural views dictate that any family with such children is “cursed”, yet The Mary Rice Centre welcomes them warmly. Teachers, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists cater for these students, mobilising them for employment in the best of cases. All of our hearts were deeply touched to see the love and commitment of the staff in this place. It was doubly heartening to note that construction undertaken in part by the Eddies team of 2018 had been added to, and the facilities, whilst modest by western standards, were serving their purpose in a great way.
Possibly the other most notable force for good that we partnered with on our stay, were the youth workers from the Kibera slum, led by Samuel Karanja who has an existing relationship with St Edward’s from previous immersions. For these youth workers, the mission is very personal. Almost all of them grew up in the slums and have used the power of education to break that cycle within their own lives. They were now role models for the children of Kibera. Our seven fantastic Year 11 students collaborated seamlessly with these youth workers to help and inspire the young ones.
Other places of social justice that we visited were:
The Ruben Centre – an amazing outreach on the edge of the Makuru slum, catering for such needs as maternity, pre and primary school education, micro financing of small businesses, physiotherapy and OT services, workforce skill building and public awareness of corruption within the community. Our students also did some brilliant classroom teaching!
The Women for Women centre – helping young women to have a voice in amongst the abuse and misogyny that has infected the community.
St Stephen’s informal school – a school located inside the Kibera slum. It was a privilege for the students and I to also teach some classes here.
The Advocacy Centre – which advocates for children's rights chiefly through an amazing commitment to educating the community as a whole.
Other experiences on this memorable excursion included:
Visiting the famed Rift Valley
The students being invited to dance on stage in front of an audience at The Kenyan Cultural Centre
Seeing baby elephants at an orphanage
Dining at Carnivores restaurant – enjoying ostrich, crocodile and ox along the way!
Touring the National Park and almost seeing an attack on a baby giraffe by a male lion
I think I speak for all involved in heartily recommending this trip to any prospective participants in the future. It is a perspective challenging, yet fun experience.
Mr David Ritchie

The Challenges at Year 10 Camp
This year’s camp was the warmest in the last 15 years, 5 days straight of dry unseasonably warm weather which allowed for a very successful camp.
The hikers experienced brilliant views of the Great Dividing Range as they summited Mt Twynum and enjoyed an amazing snow slide on their descent. Mountain biking proved to be more challenging because of the warmer weather but the boys persevered and experienced a range of trails and skills tracks throughout Bungarra. More importantly, apart from a few elbow and knee skirmishes and minor cuts, there were no broken bones from students or staff. The raft building proved to be popular with the boys on Jindabyne Lake, as a refreshing break from the warm weather. Abseiling out at Jindabyne Dam had the bonus of an amazing view of the Dam release, which happens once a year to help replenish and rejuvenate the Snowy River ecosystems. From all reports the boys were happy with the food, the chicken ‘shnitty’ was popular after the hike, but ration packs are always a challenge, part of the experience! Collectively the boys approached the week positively and engaged with the activities, camp guides and teachers. The highlights were the individual achievements of many of the students who were often taken out of their comfort zone with many of the activities but quietly pushed through the challenges. A big thank you to all the boys for their positive attitude and especially the staff who volunteered their time to be away from family and look after the boys for the week.

The Voice Public Speaking Competition
This week the library hosted a round of 'The Voice Public Speaking Competition' for Years 7-10.
This was a great opportunity for students to research current global issues and to present their views to their peers.
Students were asked to present a prepared speech which proposes a solution to a given world problem. They then participated in question time, answering impromptu questions about their topic – not an easy task.
We saw Marco Sgaravizzi from Year 7 discuss ways the international community can manage and prevent civil conflicts around the world, Jayden Redfern from Year 8 proposed solutions to improve access to educational opportunities in regional and remote areas of Australia, Daniel Herd from Year 8 presented strategies to promote mental health in Australia, and Ikey Allen from Year 9 tackled the topic of how Australia can improve economic equality between its citizens.
Congratulations to these students for showcasing not only their exceptional public speaking abilities but also for presenting considered responses to pressing global issues.

Year 11 Legal Studies Excursion
On Thursday 24th October, the Year 11 Legal Studies students travelled down to the Downing Centre to observe various court case proceedings.
The Downing Centre is the main court complex in Sydney, containing local courts, state government courts and the District Court of New South Wales. The Centre contains 7 levels of courtrooms. It deals with a range of cases from drink driving, common assault and drug possession to complex jury trials for serious criminal offences such as commercial drug cases, robberies, complex fraud cases and serious assaults such as grievous bodily harm and sexual assaults. Each courtroom is normally used for a specific purpose.
On this day the students were able to watch a jury trial; R v Nealon. Patrick Nealon was charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning the death of the University of Technology student, Nicole Lewinski, at about 5.45pm on December 14th, 2016, while she stood on a pedestrian island. He had pleaded not guilty in his previous hearing. We heard the testimony of two witnesses that were present at the time of the incident and the submission of photographic evidence introduced to support The Crown’s case against Mr Nealon.
The students also visited Court 4.7; The Drug Court. This court supervises the community-based rehabilitation of drug-dependent offenders. The magistrate aims to assist non-violent offenders to overcome their drug dependence and their criminal offending. Weekly visits by some offenders are mandatory, ensuring they are complying with the programs and sanctions the court has issued. During the short time we were in this courtroom, we saw at least six people go before the magistrate for various offences with drugs.
Earlier in the year, the students participated in The Mock Trial Competition, supported by the Law Society of NSW. This provided practical experience into the running of a court case in a true-to-life adversarial setting. Visiting the Downing Centre provided an understanding of the way the courts work and as some of the cases unfolded, shed light on why the law is the way it is. It also demonstrated the emotional impact of the law on the accused, family members and friends.

BBSSSA Tennis
Trials for the 2019 team were held in Term 3 and we were delighted by the number of talented tennis players who participated.
Unfortunately again in 2019 the Broken Bay Tennis Tournament was held in a week which clashed with both our Year 10 camp and Year 11 exams and so these boys were unable to trial for the team, but we had many students from Years 7, 8 and 9 to consider. As we are only able to put forward a team of 9 players, difficult choices needed to be made.
The team selected, we made our way to Oxford Falls on Tuesday 29th October, one player down due to a last minute illness. Conor Murphy in Year 7 and Kale Puata in Year 7 played with Max Leaitua in Year 7 in the junior team. They stood out in their pool for the power and precision of their serves and did not drop a single set. The boys dominated the semi-finals against Mater Maria College, winning convincingly in two sets. They met St Paul’s College in the final and went down to a more experienced team. I look forward to seeing what these players can do in the future.
Given the unavailability of our Year 10 and 11 players, our senior team was staffed by students playing up a division. Lachlan Shedden of Year 9 and Simon Barber of Year 8, were joined on the day by a member of the St Leo’s Junior team standing in for their sick team mate. They played valiantly but could not compete with the superior reach of the older players. The boys played some tough tennis and should be proud of their efforts.
Our Championship Team, Max Byrnes, Adam Miller and Conor Kelly won all of their pool games and defeated St Paul’s College in the semi-finals to win a place in the finals. After a close match it all came down to a tense final set where they were narrowly defeated by St Augustine’s College. The boys were very disappointed to miss out on an opportunity to return to Bathurst in 2020 but are to be congratulated for their sportsmanship. Two parents from opposing teams approached staff to comment on this aspect of the team’s performance on the day.
The boys’ commitment and behaviour was praiseworthy and we are all looking forward to next year’s challenges.
Mrs Heidi Englund
Manager

Beach Volleyball
The St Edward’s College Beach Volleyball team arrived at Manly Beach at 8.30 am on Tuesday 29 October to beautiful sunshine, little wind and looked out over the horizon to clean waves which set a fantastic scene for a day of fun yet competitive Beach Volleyball.
In a pool format St Edward’s had 2 games of 3 sets which they were victorious in. This was followed by a semi final and then the final. St Edward’s were dominant all day, playing with a great spirit and showing some very competitive stages of play, digging deep into their skills to come back from being down, sometimes 5-7 points, to win.
Results:
Game 1: vs Mackillop College, Warnervale - Set 1: 21-18, Set 2: 17-18 and Set 3: 10-9 in golden point. Lachlan Rousell was instrumental with some outstanding setting of the ball, backed up by Oskar Thompson, Sam Wilson and Chet Robinson being powerful at the net.
Game 2: v St Leo’s College, Wahroonga - Set 1: 26-10 and Set 2: 24-13. Harry Walker stepped up his game and played solidly. By now the boys were displaying an all round display of teamwork and sportsmanship with Harry Wright solid under pressure with Mitchell Brooks, Alex Bailey and Dylan Poate combining to score many valuable points with outstanding teamwork.
Semi Final: vs Mater Maria, Warriewood - Set 1: 16-14 and Set 2: 27-13. In the semi final the team showed they were really playing as a solid unit and put together many great plays.
Final: vs St Paul's College, Manly - Set 1: 25-9, Set 2: 13-24 and Set 3: 11-7. A minor lapse in the 2nd set however St Edward’s powered home in the Final with an excellent final set of play, making St Edward’s College the BBSSSA 2019 Beach Volleyball champions.
Congratulations to Reid Yarnold who was the best server throughout the day. Well done to all the boys on their teamwork, camaraderie and outstanding sportsmanship.
