Easter Liturgy
The tradition of sharing our Holy Week celebration with St Joseph’s Catholic College to remember the significance of Easter continued this year.
Once again, the ERC was packed with students, staff and parents from both Colleges. This was a solemn ceremony of prayer, song, and drama.
The Passion of Christ is followed by witnessing the Stations of the Cross. Our Year 10 were outstanding in presenting the final days of Jesus.
The musicians on the day, under the guidance of the music staffs from both Colleges produced brilliant performances and created a great atmosphere. Congratulations to all the students who prepared so thoroughly for this wonderful community event.
A final thank you to all who contributed to the most important liturgical event on the Christian calendar.

Clean4Shore Report
On 29 March, St Edward's students participated in the Clean4Shore program in the Green Point, Yattalunga and Saratoga areas.
Due to the low tide, access to the planned collection at Erina Bay wasn't possible so the team moved across the waterway into the mangroves at Green Point. During the course of the day items including general plastic waste, fishing line, glass bottles and timber products were collected. See the report below for a full breakdown of all items retrieved.
Another great outcome for our students and Clean4Shore.

An Update from the French Faculty
Bonjour et Bienvenue! This term, the Year 8 cohort embarked on their French language journey, setting themselves up for lifelong language and cultural learning.
In just 10 weeks they have learnt how to introduce themselves, ask where other people live and what country they are from, and give basic information. The boys have immersed themselves in learning about Francophone countries and cultures, researching and learning about the rich and colourful lives of 440 million French speaking people. The Year 8 boys have made a brilliant start to their language learning – Bravo!
The French faculty hosted French sessions as part of the Day in the Life experience for new Year 6 students with the help of 13 enthusiastic Year 10 French students. The Year 6 boys were able to experience the exciting and fun filled lessons in store for them when they start language learning at St Edward's. The Year 10 boys facilitated French cultural Bingo games and their competitive streak came out when helping the Year 6 students compete in a model Eiffel Tower building competition. The Year 10 students were also able to show off their brilliant command of the French language, showcasing their hard work and dedication as they supported the Day in the Life students through the fun French activities.

English Stars Attend Term 1 Immersion Day
On Tuesday this week, 40 students ranging from Year 7 through to Year 11 attended the first English Immersion Day for 2023 supported by Mrs Titheradge and Mrs McDonald.
The students were selected to attend the incursion after being awarded English Star of The Month for either February or March. These students were presented at assembly on Friday 24 March with a certificate, a special commemorative pen and a canteen voucher. Their English teacher had to nominate them to receive the award as an acknowledgement of their commitment to their English studies.
The Immersion Day was an opportunity for these students to experience some engaging and interesting literacy-based activities. The day was divided up to into 5 sessions, each themed around reading, writing, and creating.
Session one was a book tasting. Students sampled a selection of books, filling out a “tasting menu”, eventually choosing one book which was then theirs to keep. Many studies have shown a clear link between reading for pleasure and broader academic success, and this is what this first session was all about. Session two was poetry writing mini workshop. In the new HSC for English Module C – The Craft of Writing is all about writing creatively, persuasively, or discursively. This session aimed to hone students’ skills in creative writing, notably poetry, to develop their confidence in this area leading to their senior years. Session three was centred around communication and critical thinking skills. This session was focussed on students working on their communication and critical thinking skills as they worked in small groups. Students sorted through narratives presented as evidence and solved the presented mystery. This session relied on students developing their comprehension skills which is a key component of every English course across every stage. Year 9 were the first team to solve the mystery, working together cohesively and as a solid unit. Session four and five were all about having some creative fun. This session allowed students to see that English can be enjoyable, leading to greater engagement and interest. Students hunted for “Easter Eggs” hidden around the ERC Foyer. Once they found an “egg” they cracked it open and tackled the literacy tasks inside. One was the creation of a Black Out poem and the other was making their own bookmark to use in their newly selected book from the first session. Each session was created to extend and consolidate students' love of literacy and learning and reward them in fun and creative ways due to their efforts this term in English.
The atmosphere of the day was relaxed and fun, with students challenging themselves to try new things and push themselves outside their comfort zone. The boys were treated to Hot Cross Buns, lollies, Easter Eggs and hot chocolates as well as recess and lunch. All in all, it was a fun day, and we are already looking forward to the Term 2 Immersion Day which will reward the next batch of English Stars.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to Matthew Kirkland in Year 10 who has received the Premier’s Reading Challenge Medal in honour of his commitment to completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
Matthew has completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge consecutively since kindergarten and we congratulate him for his ongoing commitment to reading over the past 10 years.
What an outstanding achievement! Matthew was asked what some of his favourites have been throughout the years… He was quick to reply that the Harry Potter series by J K Rowling was one of his favourites along with Animal Farm by George Orwell and he mentioned in early primary school, he enjoyed reading Graeme Base books like The Waterhole.
Matthew received both a medal and a letter from Premier Perrottet, and the following excerpt was taken from his letter:
The competition encourages students to read widely and to develop lifelong reading habits. Reading can offer opportunities to explore the world around us and to imagine new possibilities. It allows us to gain new perspectives and insights into ourselves and the world.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open! If you would like to participate, see the library staff.

Reading Hour
On Tuesday 4 April St Edward’s College Library celebrated ‘Reading Hour’. A variety of different subjects combined in the Library to select from fiction novels, picture books, graphic novels and even French-based books and read for the lesson.
There were several competitions for the boys to participate in including Book in a Jar, Guess the Emoji book title and Guessing Harry Potter Spells. We would like to congratulate the following students who won the competitions: Frederick Lowe, Tom Barry, Nash Crawford, Bronson Webb and Adam Sweeney.
We also had several lucky door prizes for both students and teachers. A massive thank you to the teachers and students who participated in ‘Reading Hour’ and a big well done to the Library Staff for organising this event. It is great to see the reading culture within St Edward’s growing stronger and stronger every day.

St Edward’s vs Blacktown Patrician Brothers
Under 14 and Under 15 Annual Trial Rugby League Game vs Blacktown Patrician Brothers
On 24 March our two teams took on the mighty Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown in the annual trial game. The first of these friendly games took place 20 years ago and they have become a great tradition between the two Colleges and a highlight in the College calendar.
There was a great atmosphere throughout both games especially when the crowd roared. Taking on last year’s State Champions is a tough task but our boys were up for the challenge.
Both games began impressively for St Edward’s with great charges from the forwards and slick work from the backs. This gave our boys plenty of confidence, but Blacktown were not going to go away without a fight. As the games progressed, Blacktown showed their great depth and began to dominate both on the field and the score board. The tough tackling from all players and organised attack, was a feature of these highly entertaining contests. At full time, Blacktown were victorious in the Under 14's game and the Under 15's game. All those who played need to be congratulate for the spirit in which the games were played.
After the game, one player from each team was selected as the best player on ground.
Final Scores
Under 14’s: St Edward’s College 12 - Blacktown Patrician Brothers 20
Under 15’s: St Edward’s College 6 - Blacktown Patrician Brothers 18

Careers/Vocational Education
Careers Pathways Expo a Great Success
On 30 March, St Edward’s College was the host of a Careers Pathways Expo for parents and students from Years 10 to 12.
The event targeted parents and students, due to recent research determining parents are the key influencers in their child’s career pathways decisions. The College invited experts and key exhibitors from universities, colleges, local employers, TAFE, associations, and defence forces to educate and guide those present. We also had two special presentations on Early Entry Schemes and studying overseas.
To reach more parents, we extended the invitation to parents from St Joseph’s Catholic College, St Peter’s Catholic College, MacKillop Catholic College, and St Brigid’s Catholic College and we thank the 453 parents who registered and attended with their families, making over 1000 attendees. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and we now plan to host this highly successful event every two years.
We take this opportunity to thank the following exhibitors for participating and taking part in the successful evening:
Australian Defence Force, ADW Johnson Pty Ltd, AIQS - The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, CCUSA - Camp Counsellor’s/Volunteer, Central Coast Council, Central Coast Group Training, Central Coast Industry Connect, Crossmuller/Borg, Crowne Plaza Terrigal, Engineers Australia, International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS), International Sports College of Australia, JMC Academy, National Institute of Education - UCAT and Medical Interviews, NECA Training and Apprenticeships, North Construction & Building, NSW FITC (Maritime & Safety Training NSW), NSW Police, Omnia Inclusive Employment Solutions, One Agency Kylee Jones Properties, PICA Group, Price Waterhouse Cooper, Sydney Flight Centre, TAFE NSW, The Hotel School Australia, The University of Sydney, The University of NSW, Training Services NSW, University of Newcastle, The University of Technology Sydney, University of Tasmania, Australian Catholic University (ACU), Avondale University, Campion College, Macquarie University, Universities Admissions Centre and Internationally Educated.

Applications are open
Applications for study at uni in 2024 are open. Students can apply for undergraduate study as well as the Schools Recommendation Scheme, the Educational Access Scheme and Equity Scholarships.
Although not all courses for 2024 are available now, encourage your students to choose any 2024 course to complete their application and come back later to review and change their preferences as courses are added. All semester 1, 2024 courses will be available by August.
Applications for international Year 12 students will open on Wednesday 19 April.
UAC PINs
Students received their UAC PIN today. PIN emails were sent to the email address NESA or ACT BSSS has on file.
Remind your students to register a personal email address (rather than a school one) with NESA. They can do this by logging in to Students Online. This will mean they can still be contacted by UAC in December when they have left school.
Why apply through UAC?
We know that students are unsure about whether they should apply directly to an institution or through UAC, and to increase their chances many are doing both. Not all institutions accept direct applications from Year 12 students but it’s important for students considering a direct application to remember the following:
A UAC application gives students five course preferences to choose; they don’t have to apply five times to five different institutions.
Having a UAC application enables students to apply for Access and early entry schemes: EAS, SRS and Equity Scholarships.
Having a UAC application as well as a direct application will give students more chance of securing an offer, so long as they don't enter the same preferences in both applications.
The UAC Guide
The UAC Guide will be arriving at schools from the beginning of Term 2. Contact UAC if there are any issues with your school’s delivery.
The Guide contains everything Year 12 students – both domestic and international – need to know about applying for uni in 2024 in one handy publication. Comprehensive course descriptions can be found on UAC’s website. Course details can change throughout the year so encourage your students to check back regularly.
