Students with Diabetes Support
Students with Diabetes Support Group
Hi, I am Kane Howe, a Year 12 Prefect at St Edward’s College and a type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed shortly after my 16th Birthday while I was in Year 10. I had to learn how to, and I’m continually learning how to, deal with diabetes alongside my schooling and outside of school commitments. I never had any senior students to look to for help, inspiration or just for a friendly face at lunch time with my diabetes.
My hope is that no student at St Edward’s will have to deal with diabetes on their own. I wish to offer support to others with diabetes, to have the benefit of my experiences, resources and connections to enable them to live their best lives.
For any student that has any questions or would like to meet face to face to discuss diabetes, I will be available Tuesday mornings during Home Room to meet in Room 60. I encourage you to contact me, Mrs Pearson (Leader of Wellbeing) or Mr Missio-Spiteri (College Counsellor) to arrange a meeting with me.

Clean4Shore – Environment Portfolio
On Thursday 20 February Mr Brown and eleven committed environmental warrior students from Years 7-10 were part of a Clean4Shore program, helping clean up the local waterways.
Captained by 'Jono' our fearless leader from Clean4Shore, we embarked on a boat from the shore of St Edward's College and headed towards the mangroves around Erina Creek. Our boys were outstanding, leaving no stone unturned by crawling on hands and knees into the mosquito infested mangroves to collect approximately two box trailer loads of rubbish. The highlight of the day was wading through the middle of Brisbane Water and taking our biggest haul for the day, a sunken fibreglass boat. After wrestling with ropes and an oyster covered hull, we finally hooked it up and towed it all the way back to shore and disposed of it. It was great to not only clean up but be educated on the amount of waste that gets washed in our waterways. Thanks again to Jono and Simon from Cleean4Shore for allowing our College to a part of this fantastic program.

The Touchstones in Religious Education
A large part of our Religious Education focuses on the Edmund Rice Touchstones, which help to guide us in everything we do here at St Edward’s.
Mr Sullivan’s Year 7 class have decided to create posters which highlight certain aspects of the Touchstones and some of the work is outstanding. Through Liberating Education our boys continue to display growth in what they do with their teachers. Well done, boys!
[smallgallery fooid="23932"]
Year 9 have been working in ceramics to create visual representations of our Touchstones. After discussion in the class about the meaning of our four Touchstones: Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community and Justice and Solidarity; we identified how our school community demonstrates our commitment to upholding the values represented in the Touchstones. Working together they have each created a set of the Touchstones in clay to take home as a visual representation of their commitment to the values they symbolise.

HSC Disability Provisions 2020
Disability Provisions in the HSC are practical arrangements designed to help students who could not otherwise make a fair attempt to show what they know in an exam room.
These provisions granted, are solely determined by how the student’s exam performance is affected. Each school is responsible for determining and approving their own Disability Provisions for all school-based assessment tasks while NESA determines Disability Provisions for the external Higher School Certificate examinations.
For students to apply for Disability Provisions, schools must submit an online application to NESA. This application indicates and must include recent evidence. Evidence may include medical reports, reading results, spelling results, writing samples and teacher comments. Provisions that can be applied for include separate supervision, access to reader and/or writer, rest breaks and extra time. Strong evidence is needed in support of the application in order to be successful. Access to in-school provisions does not guarantee equal or similar provisions being granted by NESA for all formal, external exams held at the end of the year.
Generally, online applications are applied for during Term 1 but can be applied for up to the day prior to the formal exam period.
If you have any queries regarding these provisions, please don’t hesitate to contact me via College email.

Triathlon
On 27 February, 21 St Edward's College students travelled down to the International Regatta Centre to participate in the NSW All Schools Teams Triathlon.
There were five intermediate teams, one junior and one senior team. The juniors were in the water first and finished 9th overall in the CCC division. Callum Kinnaird, the rider for this team, finished with the best overall junior time on the bike leg which is a huge achievement!
Our intermediate boys were all competitive and four out of the five swimmers came out of the water as the top 12 swimmers lead by Daniel McLoughlin. This is a huge achievement considering there were over 200 competitors in each race. Daniel McLoughlin's team with Alec Walters and Gabe Scott, finished 2nd in the CCC division and were awarded a medal for their efforts.
The senior division, who were all racing in their last triathlon for the College, saw a very competitive field. Jacob Curcio, our swimmer, came out of the water in the top 10. Logan Pugsley went hard on the bike followed by Daniel Hope however the boys were unable to finish in the top three, narrowly missing out on a medal in the CCC division.
For me it was a great day out with the students, they were able to register independently with the older boys helping out the younger ones. Mr Tom Ristuccia provided the boys with expert advice on strategy from his years of experience on the track and all the boys were there watching each other’s races and cheering each other on. Congratulations to all who participated!

Open Touch Football
On Wednesday 20 February, the Open Boys Touch Football team travelled to Doyalson to compete in the Broken Bay Gala Day. The day also doubled as selection trials for the Broken Bay team.
We started our day in Pool B, playing games against St Brigid’s College (winning 5-1), MacKillop College (winning 6-1) and St Peter’s College (winning 5-2). The results saw the team top their pool. A combination of speed, skill and awareness led to several slick tries that highlighted the quality of players across the team. Sebastian Plaister stood out with his enthusiasm in defence and attack across all three games. While the quality was certainly there, the team was playing within itself.
In the semi-final against Mater Maria College, the focus was on playing up-tempo and running their middles around. From the start we asserted our dominance and raced to a 5-0 lead inside 10 minutes. From there, we controlled the game and won comfortably 8-0. Joel Evans scored a brace of tries, including an intercept try from well past our side of halfway.
Commanding performances from the team in the round games, saw nine players selected in the Possibles v Probables, with the other three very hard done by, not to make it. Our boys did a great job and shone in the game with five players making the team (Sandon Smith, Owen Flaherty, Josh Woutersz, Ben Dufficy and Tyler Moriarty) and the remaining four boys named as shadow players (Zac Healey, Joel Sherub, Wiremu Tibbutt and Fletcher Powell). The boys will now head to Port Stephens to represent Broken Bay in the NSWCCC selection trials in early April.
The boys then had to re-focus on the final against St Leo’s College. Both teams started slowly, with mistakes and great reads in defence, contributing to some end-to-end football. Eventually, some slick short side play led to Daniel Peters scoring in the corner and saw us lead 1-0. Two, further tries, resulted from some very good lead-up from the entire team which gave St Edward's College the win 3-0 resulting in them re-claiming the Broken Bay crown.

Parenting Ideas – Respectfully Breaking the Masculinity Strait Jacket
There’s nothing so mindless as a mob, which was abundantly clear last year when a group of boys from a Melbourne school were filmed making a misogynist chant on a crowded tram.
While it’s easy to blame the mob for such behaviour it shows that out dated ideas about masculinity persist. There’s still a lot of work to be done to teach boys to respect women and treat them as equals.
Calling Out the Bro’ Code
The tendency for boys to bond tightly is dual-edged sword. On the one hand, a tight set of mates provides a boy with a sense of safety, security and belonging. On the other hand, the bonds between young males can propel a boy to act in ways that are reckless, amoral and just plain stupid.
It takes a brave boy to go against the crowd and call out this bro’ code. Doubly so when he has to stand up and call out the sexist behaviour of his friends. Calling out your mates’ sexist comments, like calling out violent acts, is the quickest road to ostracism and being branded a loser, loner or loathsome by the mob.
Respectful Attitudes Take Courage
It takes courage and real leadership to swim on your own against the tide, particularly when the mob is swimming the other way. Courage, leadership and respectful behaviour are part of the ongoing conversations about respectful behaviours that adults need to have with boys from the early primary school years.
Respectful Attitudes Requires Eldership
Men have major role to play in helping boys develop healthy values and attitudes that they can take into their adult lives. Men’s lifestyles and beliefs become touchstones for adolescent boys who are searching for legitimate pathways to adulthood.
Boys need to see genuine reactions of outrage and disgust by the men in their lives to sleazy, inappropriate behaviours toward women displayed by some current high profile celebrities so they see that misogyny and disrespect plays no part in decent masculinity. Similarly, they need to see men calling out inappropriate remarks made toward women in the workplace, in the community and at home.
Respectful Attitudes are Forged Through Rites of Passage
One of the great opportunities we have as a culture is the reintroduction of healthy rites of passage from boyhood (and girlhood) into manhood (and womanhood). It is through adult-initiated rites of passage that boys leave behind the vestiges of boyhood, taking on the mantle of manhood and the responsibilities that go with being a man.
Respectful behaviours between boys and girls are now part of school curricula in all schools. They also need to be reinforced, and indeed lived, by parents and other community members for lasting change to occur.
