Student Leadership Team – Leadership Workshop
On Tuesday in Week 9, the Student Leadership Team met with Wellbeing and Leadership specialist and motivational speaker Daniel Merza, author of the award winning book, Getting the Monkeys of your Back.
Daniel’s day-long workshop, entitled ‘Gameplan for School Greatness’ helped our young leaders learn real life skills, including how to banish stress, manage procrastination, build resilience and develop a leadership mindset. As a team, they were able to develop plans to improve the student experience at school in the domains of mental health, inclusivity and academic motivation.

Student Led Learning Conferences – Years 7 to 12
During Term 3 parents/carers, teachers and students will have two opportunities to meet online and reflect on the learning that has taken place this year to date.
The dates and details for Student Led Conferences will be:
Thursday 25 July (Week 1) from 4.00 pm to 7.30 pm
Thursday 1 August (Week 2) from 4.00 pm to 7.30 pm
These conferences will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Teachers will call the students on their Microsoft Teams account at the scheduled booking time to make contact – students must ensure they are logged in to Microsoft Teams using their St Edward's College email. It is preferable that students use their school laptop for this. Microsoft Teams meetings will not be recorded by teaching staff and we request that parents and students not record meetings either.
All conferences are intended to support your child in developing a greater sense of responsibility for their learning. It will be compulsory for students to attend all scheduled meetings with their parents/carers. Students will be expected to take an active role in leading their parents/carers and teachers through a reflection on their learning in that subject. There will be an expectation that students complete a reflection on their progress for each subject prior to the meeting. The student, parents/carers and teachers will then reflect on and evaluate the learning goals set and discuss strategies to address areas of challenge and achieve learning growth throughout Semester Two.
The Student Led Conference bookings are managed with an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). The steps to access PTO are available below – once completed, you will receive an email from PTO allowing you to book interviews with your son’s teachers that you wish to see. Please note that bookings are limited. All interviews will be of seven minutes duration.
Access to PTO will be available from Wednesday 3 July at 7:00 pm and will be closed off for bookings two days before interviews.
If you encounter any problems using PTO, please contact the school office on 4321 6400.
Please follow these steps to access the system:
Click here go to the PTO website
Click on “Obtain PIN/Password” (you will need to supply your email address)
Enter your email address and click on “Send Email”
Check your email in-box for your login details or click on the link in the email
Go back to the PTO website, login with the details supplied via email
Follow the online instructions to complete the bookings.
Please note that in Step 1 of the booking process you will need to select the start date and time by scrolling through the drop-down menu until you reach your desired start time.

News from the Science Faculty
The Science and Engineering Challenge - Written by Year 10 students Liam Downs, Ewan Magill and Isaac McCudden.
During Week 9, St Edward's hosted the annual Science and Engineering Challenge. Year 9 and 10 students from various Central Coast schools competed over two days for glory!
On Tuesday, students from the following schools participated:
St Edward's College
Narara Valley High School
Gorokan High School
Wyong Christian College
Morisset High School
St Joseph's College
Gosford High School
On Wednesday, students from these schools competed:
Lisarow High School
Kincumber High School
Green Point Christian College
Central Coast Adventist College
Central Coast Grammar School
St Peter's College
Erina High School
Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College
For the first time in the Science and Engineering Challenge, St Edward's College entered two teams: one Year 10 team and one Year 9 team, sparking a fierce rivalry. The Year 10 team aimed not only to win overall but also to decisively beat the Year 9 team, as their science teacher (who shall remain unnamed) warned they would never live down a loss!
The first half of the day featured activities such as:
Flight: Students designed an autonomous glider to deliver supplies to a specific landing zone, simulating a scenario where a flood had cut off a regional town from food and medical supplies.
Fish Traps: A new activity where teams built structures using 3D-printed rocks and sticks to catch specific types and amounts of "fish" (marbles) as they swam along the river. This activity highlighted the engineering skills of First Nations people in Australia, referencing the well-known fish trap in Brewarrina, NSW.
Helter Skelter Shelter: Teams designed and built an earthquake-proof apartment block for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
At the lunch break, the score check revealed that St Edward's Year 10 team was being beaten by the Year 9 team and was actually in last place. However, after a pep talk from their science teacher, they returned to the competition with renewed vigor.
In the second half of the day, the activities included:
Wind Turbine: Designing and building a model wind turbine that generated the greatest amount of speed and power.
Confounding Communications: Designing efficient codes to send messages along fiber optic rods using only pulses of colored light.
ElectraCITY: Providing electricity to as much of the city’s infrastructure as possible at the lowest possible cost, ideally making a profit.
Job Juggle: Completing and optimising schedules for scenarios such as an adventure camp, an airport, and a music festival. Despite their usual difficulties with scheduling school tasks, the team excelled in this activity.
The ultimate event was bridge testing, where teams spent the whole day building a bridge to carry "gold" ingots from one side of the test rig to the other.
The Year 10 team's bridge was the third lightest and held the second highest weight. Combined with wins in Confounding Communications and Job Juggle, this led to a significant improvement in the overall standings. The Year 10 team made a remarkable comeback from last place at lunch to finish second overall, just 80 points behind Gosford High. Most importantly, they beat the St Edward's Year 9 team!
Well done to all competitors for a great day. Special thanks to Mr Foster for organizing the event and Ms Mantellato for her wisdom and encouragement.

Under 13’s Football
On Thursday 13 June, the Under 13 Soccer team travelled to Cromer Park to compete in the Broken Bay Soccer Gala Day for 2024.
Despite a slow start, we managed a 2-1 victory over Mater Maria Catholic College in our first game. We initially fell behind to a penalty but showed impressive resilience to equalise at 1-1 by halftime with a breakaway goal from Tom Bayss, before eventually securing the win with a goal from Austin Tebbutt.
Our second match of the day was a challenging affair against St Paul's Catholic College, where St Edward's was kept in the game by some stellar saves from Riley Herring. Although we started finding consistency in our attacks, breaking down the strong opposition backline proved difficult. The deadlock was finally broken in the second half when Jeremy Gerber headed in a free kick from just outside the box, ending the game with a 1-0 victory for us.
Following this match, our luck turned when the boys lost a closely contested battle against St Peter’s Catholic College. St Peter’s brought size and physicality to the match, and despite a late goal in the second half by Ethan Rowell after impressive midfield work from Raife Owen, we finished the match down 1-2.
Our next match was also hotly contested against another local rival, MacKillop Catholic College. They too had impressive size in their ranks, making it challenging to penetrate their defense. Despite solid chances in the first half, the score remained 0-0 at halftime. We began the second half with an impressive spell of possession and eventually capitalised on our opportunities, scoring two goals in quick succession - a solid finish from Tom Bayss and another from a free kick outside the box by Tristan Austin, securing a 2-0 victory.
At this stage in the tournament, our results meant that our final pool game would be against St Leo’s Catholic College. A win would guarantee us a spot in the final as joint pool winners, while a loss would cement second place for us. The game proved to be a well-matched challenge, and it showcased some of the best football we played all day. St Leo’s were also a strong side, and their coach praised our boys' ability to control possession in midfield. In the second half, we continued our quality and took the lead with an impressive finish into the top corner by Tom Bayss, his third goal of the day.
Unfortunately, the tournament final did not go well for the boys. An unfortunate handball on the line by one of our otherwise excellent defenders led to a penalty and, somewhat harshly, a red card. After conceding the penalty, we faced an uphill battle with a player down for most of the match. Despite some fantastic efforts from the boys who never gave up, we ended the match 0-3.
Overall, it was a fantastic day of football, with the boys playing in the spirit of the game and representing themselves and the College remarkably well. Special mention goes to our fantastic student referee, Nicholas Snelson, who officiated our matches fairly and professionally on the day.

Futsal Gala Day
Under 14 Futsal A Team - Written by Eli Pepper
On 5 June, the Under 14 A Futsal team competed in the Central Coast Futsal Championships. The first game was an easy win against one of the Central Coast Sports College teams, setting us up well for the day by winning 3 out of 4 games.
Moving into the quarter-finals, we faced one of the top teams from Central Coast Sports College and won quite comfortably. In the semi-finals, we challenged the strongest team, the Central Coast Sports College A team, and unfortunately lost 3-0.
It was a great day. Special thanks to Mrs Worrall and Mr Ellis for dedicating their time to train us and take us to the event.
Under 14 Futsal B Team - Written by Tam Johnson
On Wednesday, 5 June, our Under 14 B Futsal team went to Niagara Park Stadium to compete in a Futsal tournament against several schools, including Narrabeen High School, Central Coast Sports College, Wyong High School, and Terrigal High School. We had a team of 8 boys from Years 8 and 9 competing on the day.
In our first round, we played against Central Coast Sports College. Despite initially trailing 2-0, we fought back and secured a well-deserved 4-2 win against a strong side.
Our second game was against Terrigal High School, which we comfortably won 2-0, giving us confidence for the upcoming matches.
In the third game, we faced another strong Central Coast Sports College team and unfortunately lost 4-0. Overall, it wasn’t a bad result considering the opposition's strength.
In our final group game against Wyong High School, we lost 3-0, narrowly missing out on the quarter finals by just one goal difference. Nonetheless, we had a fantastic day together and bonded well as a team.

Careers – Renewables Program
Last week nine Year 10 students: Byron Hubble, Benny Hoban, Jayden Moggs, Cameron Moss, Franky Nassar, Finn Ryan-Englund, Jake Taylor, Cooper Vale and Zeek Vandersyde, had the opportunity to participate in a renewables program for solar installation.
Students learnt about the industry and assembled solar panels on both tile and metal roof panels. Thank you to Matt Frew, Regional Industry Partnerships, Training Services NSW who funded the program and Nick Goder, Training Coordinator at Zeal Futures for providing the trainer and facilities.
Participant Feedback
“I found the course super informative and enjoyable, I particularly liked the practical work where we got to learn how to setup live solar arrays on different roof types and stay safe while doing so”.
"It was a great course, I liked the practical side of the program which was installing solar panels onto a mock-up roof. If you have an opportunity to go, you should because you won’t find an experience like it."
