Year 11 Retreat
The Year 11 Street Retreat exposed our students to the harsh reality of life on the street for Sydney’s homeless.
Many of the elements of this type of life are unfamiliar to our students and they obviously learned so much during these three days in Sydney. The boys visited The Wayside Chapel, The Jewish Holocaust Museum, The Indigenous Centre of Excellence, Australian Catholic Mission, St Canice Catholic Church, Oasis (Salvation Army), St Mary’s Cathedral, and several outreach centres for the homeless and the surrounds of the famous Kings Cross area. They also observe and receive an explanation of the Needle Exchange and Matthew Talbot Hostel. They witness wealth and poverty on the streets of Darlinghurst. Representatives from Youth of The Streets and L’Arche inform the students of the great work that these organisations participate in. It is the hope of the St Edward's community that the lessons learnt on these few days will remain in the boy’s hearts and minds and that our outreach to others continues for life.
Mr Beacroft
Director of Mission and Identity
Student Reflection: Charlie Shannon
Retreat was an interesting experience. We were called to understand the hardships people face, when people are at their lowest of lows. Retreat involved major ideas of understanding the power people have, with their power being uneven or untold, to help others who are marginalised. We were exposed to the hardships of WWII and the Jewish Holocaust, the drug, alcohol and homelessness issues faced by people our own age, and rather than be tourists in our city, we saw things through new eyes. Retreat was an interesting experience, one that I will remember for a long time.
Student Reflection: Oska Davis
Last week we departed from the local train station to begin the Year 11 Retreat. Our trip started by dropping our bags at our accommodation the YHA Hotel. I would say my favourite thing about the Retreat would be the Australian Museum as I realised that our country has so much more history then what I realised. My second favourite place we went to was the Jewish Museum and listening to a holocaust survivor about his story and how he managed to stay alive through a time when he was in a lot of danger. I would definitely go on this retreat again if I ever got the chance to.

Science Week
Science and Engineering Challenge
In Week 9 of this term, the College hosted the Science and Engineering Challenge. This is a national competition run by the University of Newcastle, proudly supported by Rotary Clubs of the Central Coast. The College has a proud history of involvement with the event, with this being the 8th consecutive year hosting the event, and over 20 years competing in the event.
The event this year was held over the Monday and Tuesday of Week 9, with 16 schools from the Central Coast taking part in activities ranging from model bridge making, to creating robotic hands, solving power grid energy distribution issues and creating Mars rover style buggies incorporating independent suspension carrying loads over uneven surfaces. The Year 10 students representing the College did an admirable job, cooperating in small groups, demonstrating creative problem, solving and working in a stressful environment to score over 1200 points through successfully completing all tasks, to finish 2nd to Wyong Christian College by the smallest of margins. Congratulations to all students involved and well done on representing the school in such a fine fashion.
ANSTO Visit
On Tuesday 28 June, as part of their study of HSC Physics, Year 12 students visited the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights. During the day, the boys attended lectures, visited the nuclear reactor, particle accelerators and had opportunities to talk with researchers about the work they carry out and their career paths. This day was a fantastic opportunity to support the work covered within the study of Module 8 – From Atoms to the Universe, as well as gain motivation to be innovators and more critical thinkers in the future.
ORICA Visit
ON Wednesday 29 June, Year 12 Chemistry students travelled to Kooragang Island to visit ORICA, a chemical plant which produces ammonia through the Haber Process - one of the industrial processes studied to learn about chemical equilibrium. During the day, the boys were guided by chemical engineers as they toured the plant, explaining the importance of catalysts in shifting the equilibrium, and how both the reactants and products are constantly monitored to maximise the ammonia produced. After the tour, recent engineering graduates discussed their post school experiences and the opportunities that come from being involved in undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship programs.

Music Performances
Mr Toole's Year 7 Music Class
This performance activity was Year 7's first attempt to sing and play ukulele together. Whilst they only put two simple chords together for the Bob Marley song, “Three Little Birds”, it was a fun lesson for both teacher and students and showd some true potential for future music classes.
It was also a great song to drive home the message of the importance of relaxation and giving yourself time to breathe before the holidays. The enthusiasm and rhythmic skills of the class was awesome!

Some Great News from YIPA
The accolades from YIPA keep rolling in!
A big congratulations to Sacha Byrne, Charlie Jacobson and James Nilsson who took out this year's Best Band.
The boys performed to an appreciative crowd at Laycock St Theatre in their band Room 72 - aptly named after the room they rehearse in at school. Well done boys, what an achievement!

Under 13’s Football
On Tuesday 21st June the Under 13 football team travelled to Croma park to compete in the Broken Bay Football Gala Day.
The first round saw the boys kick off with a challenging match against St Augustine's Catholic College and we were narrowly beaten 1-0 by a long range strike that our keeper had very little chance of saving. The second match of the day saw us take on Mater Maria Catholic College and we came out ahead with a nail biting 2-1 win with goals from Harry Thorpe and Jacob Hall and special thanks to our shot stopper in goals Max Purkis. Round three saw us dominate over local Central Coast school St Brigid's Catholic College 8-0 with a flurry of goals from Harry Thorpe, Vin Romano, Jacob Hall, Fletcher Bush, Elio Cunico and Beau Loui.
Coming second in our pool saw us proceed to the semi-final round when we took on another Central Coast school St Peter's Catholic College where we came away with a 2-0 win thanks to another great performance from the whole team.
Progressing through to the grand final we met our arch rivals form round one St Augustine's. The boys played valiantly and left nothing on the park hitting the post twice and in a goal mouth scramble St Augustine's scored the only goal of the match. Our boys did themselves and our College proud as they came away with silver medals for the day, and we look forward to watching out for these young guns on the football field in the future.

Years 9 and 10 Touch Football
After a change of venue due to oval closures from the recent rain, the Years 9 and 10 Touch Football team travelled to Nelson’s Bay to contest the Hunter/Central Coast All Schools Carnival on Thursday 9 June.
A very cold and windy day greeted us on our arrival at the touch fields. The team played pool games against Irrawang High School (winning 7-2), All Saints College, Maitland (winning 5-3), St Bede’s Catholic College (winning 5-3) and St Joseph’s College Lochinvar (winning 4-0). The weather and a number of boys backing-up from the previous days rugby league gala day meant we were lacking our usual spark. While we comfortably won our pool, we were far from convincing.
As our pool winner, we drew the best third placed team from across the three pools in our quarter final. Having previously played St Bede’s Catholic College in our round games, we knew what to expect. The boys cruised through the game without trouble, comfortably winning 7-1.
In the semi final we came up against a good team from Brisbane Waters High School. Several of our boys had played with and against the older boys from Brisbane Waters previously. Unfortunately, we were unable to find a lead in the game and were constantly playing catch-up. The team eventually went down 4-3, with the onset of fatigue too much for the boys to overcome. A great effort considering the circumstances and invaluable experience for most of the team who will be back next year.
The Team
Byron Marks, Hunter Kay, Tevita Paea, Nate Vaughan, Luke Shereb, Josh Brown, Fletcher Sommerville, Archie Mesritz, Sam Flakus, Sam Logan, Archie Carpenter, Blade Marquart and Cooper Jones.

The Fathering Project – Implications of Sexting
Dad-Proof Tips: Starting the Conversation - The Implications of Sexting
Information about sexting
Technology has changed the world significantly over the last few decades, with countless benefits associated with its development. However, these benefits do not come without risks. The rise of sexting has come quickly and largely without warning.
What is it?
Sexting is sending sexually explicit photographs, messages, and video by phone or online devices. Some young people say they felt pressure to sext, despite most saying it was wrong. Most said they thought it was unacceptable for someone to ask for a naked photo. If you are in a relationship and thinking about sexting it is important that you consider potentially negative consequences:
Damage to your reputation
Damage to your relationships
Damage to your self-esteem
Sexually explicit photographs being spread to other people
Problems getting a job
Key background points for fathers:
35% of employers have not hired a job candidate because of content they found of them online.
Remember – the minute you send that picture, it belongs to the person on the other end of the phone, or computer. They can do anything they want with it, including sending it to everyone they know.
88% of sexually explicit images & videos uploaded by a person themselves are uploaded onto other sites.
Did you know: In Australia, the law bans sexting for anyone under 18 years?
When sexting involves someone under 18, it is ‘child pornography’, an ‘indecent act’ or an ‘indecent recording’ according to the law.
The maximum penalties for child pornography can be up to 15 years in jail and being placed on the sex offender register.
You can be charged with possessing or sharing sexual / nude images even if the image is of yourself.
Starting the conversation
The taking and sharing of sexually suggestive, and often nude images online has become a significant risk associated with social media use amongst our teens. Starting the conversations with our kids around the risks associated with sending ‘nudes’ is important in setting out expectations of their online behaviour. They may, at some stage, feel as though they are being pressured in to sexting behaviour, so it is important to ensure that they are comfortable in saying no and understand what makes a healthy relationship.
Base your conversations on the concept of healthy relationships. This allows you to talk about any topic with a positive approach. Young people need to understand what it means to be respected and respectful in the context of friendship, dating or a sexual relationship.
Tips for the conversation
Select your times and places. Prevent discomfort by talking when you are in a more private setting, like in a car driving somewhere, going for a walk together. Being in an environment where you can talk without being interrupted can also make things more comfortable for both of you.
Talk about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Discuss together what a healthy friendship or relationship should look like. Caring, respect, honesty, consent, equality, fun. Discuss what an unhealthy relationship might look like. Controlling, uncaring, no respect, dishonesty, pressure, etc
Talk about the risks of sexting. Discuss the things that could happen if the pictures or content got into the wrong hands or were shared by someone you trusted. Talk about the laws around sexting and sexually explicit images & videos (see notes above).
Use media opportunities to discuss relationships and sex. Follow up relevant TV Shows or movies with discussions. Ask for their opinions on social media and sexuality, relationships and sexting using examples from social media sites. (‘Have you or anyone you know ever been sent a nude? How did you/they feel?)
Communicate openly. When adolescents have dads, who will talk to them openly and honestly about sex, relationships and shared values, they are shown to engage in less negative risk-taking behaviour.
