Waterford Hours Due
Reminder: Waterford Hours Due at the End of Term 3
As we approach the end of Term 3, this is a timely reminder for all students to ensure their Waterford Service-Learning hours are completed. The Waterford Project is an essential part of our school's commitment to fostering community service and social responsibility among our students. By participating, students learn the value of giving back to their community and develop a deeper understanding of the importance of service in building a just and compassionate society.
To help students fulfill their Waterford hours, several opportunities are available in the coming weeks:
40 Hour Famine: By participating in this global movement, students can raise funds and awareness for those experiencing hunger and hardship.
Founder's Day: Assist your Homeroom teacher in running activities on Founder's Day to earn Waterford hours.
Coast Shelter (Week 10): Engage with our local community by supporting those in need through Coast Shelter.
Founder's Day Donation: Donating $20 towards Founder's Day activities will contribute 2 hours towards your Waterford requirement.
Please ensure that your Waterford hours are logged and submitted by the end of the term. Let's all work together to meet our goals and make a positive impact in our community!
If you have any questions regarding the submission and logging of your Waterford Hours, please contact your Religion Teacher or Mr Rozario.

Surfers ‘Make a Wave’ for SurfAid
In the month of September the surfers - students, staff and families of St Edward's are invited to join the St Edward's Surfers Make a Wave group to raise vital funds and awareness for the incredible work that SurfAid does across remote regions of the surfing world.
The premise is simple; surf everyday during the month of September, track how many surfs you have and raise money for SurfAid. In the 2023 Make a Wave month, $645,000 was raised globally. This is the second year that our Eddie’s community is participating in “Make A Wave”, last year we raised over $10,000 and hope that we will be able to do the same again this year.
All boys who participate in this great initiative will be able to gain Waterford Hours for the surfs that they have. In addition, SurfAid have donated 3 URBN Surf Melbourne Vouchers for the top three fundraisers at St Edward’s.
If you'd like to get involved, please click on the link, and sign up. If you have any questions, please contact Jackson English (jenglish@stedwards.nsw.edu.au)

Science Research Projects
Year 12 Science Extension – Research Projects
Over the past 12 months, our current HSC Science Extension students have been working under the expert eye of Ms Kristen Mantellato, along with mentors from UNSW, Sydney University and Macquarie University, to undertake and complete an independent project on an area of their choosing.
They have been challenged to interrogate and refine their ideas about science through:
analysis of historic and cultural observations
analysis of significant scientific research
considering ethical frameworks and philosophical arguments
The quality of the investigations undertaken this year has been exceptional and is testament to the hard work of the individual students, their mentors and Ms Mantellato. The boys explored a variety of unique and varied investigation questions, employing skills and techniques that they have developed throughout their HSC Science courses, along with using a variety of data collecting tools, engaged with and learning new analytical skills, modelling skills and communication forms to produce their final report.
The themes of each of the Research Projects are below, click to view:
Alternative antibacterial treatments - Christopher Dodds
Practical study on electrolyte concentration in Sport Drinks impact - Archie Hamilton
A Glimpse into the future of agriculture with hyperspectral imaging - Lachlan Pacholek Murphy
Finding Morphine's Sweet Spot - A meta-analysis - Juan Jose Rodriguez Caldas

Book Week Celebrations
Last week the library celebrated book week with the theme “reading is magic”. The library has been a hive of activity with games, challenges, trivia, and reading for everyone.
Our Year 7 and 8’s enjoyed an immersive experience of challenges and activities where they have been working hard to guess the book titles, and hunt for the characters of Harry Potter within the library. During lunchtime there have been Lego challenges, Kahoot, trivia, and an audiobook reading of Harry Potter to celebrate the magic of creation, interaction, and fun!
With the abundance of participation there has been a fierce amount of competition with students battling it out for prizes including canteen vouchers, books, and lollies. On Friday the magic continued with students and staff dressing-up as a book character. Best dressed prizes were awarded, and there was a photobooth as well to capture the spirit of the day!
These activities were to celebrate the joy of reading which has many benefits including, reducing stress, boosting knowledge and brain power, and improving focus and concentration. Not to mention all of the literacy benefits like improved grammar, spelling, vocabulary and would you believe that reading actually makes you live longer?

CSBB AFL Intermediate Gala Day
On Wednesday 21 August, the Intermediate (Under 16) AFL team travelled to North Narrabeen Reserve to contest the Broken Bay Championships.
Though the uneven fields and altered rules required some adjustment, the boys quickly found their rhythm.
In their first game they played against Mater Maria Catholic College, who had a number of rugby league players. The skill and game sense of our boys, saw us jump to an early lead. Tahj, Fraser, Sam, and David were slick through our mid-field, scoring some fantastic individual goals. From there we asserted our control and ran away with the game 32-7.
In our second game, we faced St Peter’s Catholic College, a team who we've developed a respectful rivalry after several encounters in AFL competition finals over the years. Today was no exception, as both teams were well-acquainted with each other. The first half was tightly contested, with St Peter’s holding a slight lead at the break. Pat dominated in the ruck, while Olly, Tom, Noah, Billy, and Max worked hard to clean up in defense. However, we seemed to lose momentum in the second half, and St Peter’s ultimately secured a 35-17 victory.
Our third game against St Leo’s Catholic College was one we had to win to get another game against St Peter’s. We started strongly through our midfield, with Finn, Sam and Luke taking advantage of some good service. We skipped to a strong lead going into half time. However, half time came and went, and the steam seemed to go out of our boys. A limited squad due to illness, meant we had some tired boys in the second half. St Leo’s were good enough to take advantage of this and win a close one 29-28.
Our final game became a play-off for 3rd place, against Mater Maria. The boys were determined to take the win and backed it up with effort in the game. They seemed to find the right person each time and connected some great play that eventuated in goals. Billy, Tom and Max had a real battle with each other, moving forward to score some great individual goals. The team ran out winners 43-4.
The Team
Arian McGuiness, Tahj Regattieri, Fraser Blackwell, David Hunt, Pat Oates, Olly Graham, Sam Hughes, Finn Giddings, Luke Nakagawa, Noah Debham, Max Pidgeon, Tomy Barry and Billy Fennell.
A big thank you to Zane Everson, in Year 10, who travelled down and officiated for us on the day. He did a great job for both teams.

Under 14’s Rugby 7’s Competition
On 15 August, St Edward’s entered three teams in the Under 14’s Central Coast Rugby 7's Tournament.
The day was a chance for many boys to represent the College for the first time and everyone contributed, making it a positive day. Each side enjoyed their time on and off the field and the level of sportsmanship and camaraderie between the teams was excellent.
Although the sides didn’t reach the final, there was enough talent on display to allow me to select a team to compete at the upcoming Broken Bay Tournament, where we will enter 12 boys to challenge for this title.
Congratulations to the following boys who have been selected: Fraser Boake, Cooper Armstrong, Austin Willis, Kaiden Regattieri, Joshua Marsters, Cooper Djuricin, Saint Levae, Ray Peterson, Cohen Mizzi, Brendan Lin, Sunny Straker, Damian Coughlan-Berg, Nat O’Shea.

Under 16’s Rugby 7’s Tournament
On a gloomy, wet and chilly Thursday, the College was represented by 3 teams in the Central Coast Rugby 7’s tournament being played at Central Coast Regional Sporting and Recreation Complex.
The event comprised teams being split into one of two pools, with each team playing four games and the winning team from each pool playing off in a final. The Black and White teams were drawn into the same pool, with teams from Narara Valley High School, Brisbane Water Secondary College and Erina High School. The Red team played in a pool with Central Coast Sporting College, Kincumber High School and Northlakes High School.
While each team played exceptionally well throughout the day, with each tasting success in some games, it was not to be the College's day as no team progressed to the final. However, it should be noted that the Red team lost in their decisive match to Central Coast Sports College 15-14 and the Black team missed the final by losing by one try to Erina High School. So close and much to build on with the Broken Bay Rugby 7’s still to come later this term.
