Cardinal Newman School Visit
On 20 August, five students in Year 11, from Cardinal Newman school in Argentina, accompanied by one teacher, spent the morning at our College.
They were shown the many amazing aspects of the day to day teaching and learning that occurs and the wonderful facilities that St Edward's are privileged to have. During period one and two, Ms Jess Beagin demonstrated her artistic skills in the Art rooms with photography and tiling. Our newly elected Year 11 Prefects for 2020 spent morning tea with these students and were entertained by their talents in the music rooms. Mrs Toomey’s Year 10 Religion class demonstrated how to throw a boomerang and play touch football and Mrs Englund's Year 7 class and Mrs Robinson's Year 7 class engaged in conversations of the world. Our canteen was wonderfully accommodating, making goodie boxes for our visitors to eat.
A very big thank you to all staff and students involved and how lucky we are to have made connections through EREBB in Argentina.

Students Busy Completing Waterford Hours
Students have been busy this term in the community finalising their Waterford hours for 2019.
There has been a big push with the environment within the school and there has been a lot of students filling orange Earn and Return bags diverting thousands of recyclable bottles and cans from landfill. A lot of staff and students have also taken the opportunity to fill a shoe box full of Christmas gifts for kids in developing countries. It has been great talking to people about how they go shopping as a family for these boxes and get pleasure out of knowing that they have brought joy to someone’s life over the Christmas break.
This week ten students and three parents helped prepare and serve food at Coast Shelter. It was great to see how volunteers, using food that had been donated, could provide a hot meal to those in need. During the evening I was able to move around amongst the people and talk with them. It was a great opportunity for the boys to realise that even on the Central Coast there were a lot of people in need. On a cold and rainy night when they were returning home, I am sure they spared a thought and maybe a prayer for those that didn’t have a roof over their heads and became a little more grateful for the things they might have previously taken for granted. For me it was great to see communities coming together to create a safe place where people could come, get a hot meal and share a story with friends.
On Tuesday 3 September, five students from St Edward's will go on a tour of Kings Cross. Students will be given a tour aimed at teaching them about homelessness, mental health illnesses and drug problems. It is an enlightening experience for our students and one that will remain with them for a long time. Students will be joined by Mr Bonnici and visiting teachers from St Boniface in South Africa who will be on an exchange program at St Edward's during this time. It is great to be able to showcase some of the amazing Social Justice initiatives the College offers to our international guests.

Book Week at St Edward’s College
What an amazing Book Week!
Students at St Edward’s kicked off Book Week with a bang on Friday 16 August starting with the ‘Better Than TED’ Presentation. Comedian and Public Speaker Sean Murphy conducted a three hour workshop which allowed students to improve their skills in improvisation, speaking with intent and debating/public speaking. The students were given individual feedback and should be commended on their ability to work collaboratively between Years 7-11.
The following week the whole library was focused on the Book Week theme ‘Reading is my secret power’. Classes were encouraged to book in and enjoy the activities created by the library staff to celebrate a love of learning and reading. There were huge turnouts every day with the following activities on offer:
Monday: Book in a Jar Competition
Tuesday: Guess the Teacher’s Secret Power
Wednesday: Photobooth
Thursday: Finding Loki
Friday: Superhero Kahoot
All week: Escape Room and Guess the Book Competition.
A huge thank you to the staff and students who embraced Book Week with such joy and engagement and to the library staff who spent a huge amount of time creating such a positive environment for the students. We are excited for what next year may have in store.

NSW Oztag Champion of Champions Tournament
On 13 and 14 August, Year 8 students from St Edward's College played in the NSW OzTag Champion of Champions event which saw the winning teams from each of the regional areas in NSW and the ACT meet at the Kingsway Playing Fields for a gruelling two day event.
After qualifying earlier in the year, the students got off to a cracking start winning their first three matches. Buoyed by their success, they were up early at 6 am the second morning to drive down and do it all again.
The students continued undefeated and made it into the quarter finals ranked third behind Terrigal High School and Figtree High School. St Edward's won their quarter finals against Oxley College comfortably and moved into the semi-finals against Figtree High School. Figtree displayed speed across the field however they were unable to crack the St Edward's defence. Unfortunately they were able to break the line with several kicks in play that led to three quick tries. St Edward's, led by Tyrone Dorrell and Kieran Diamond, came back in the second half with a quick try, however they were unable to maintain the pressure and were beaten 3-1.
The boys displayed outstanding sportsmanship and behaviour throughout the two days and did the College proud. I would like to thank Aymn Hamilton, Jack Legge and Malachi Smith for training and coaching the boys throughout the two events. All three boys demonstrated their extensive knowledge of the game and their ability to motivate the students which was enough to earn them the title of ‘Super Coaches’. As their teacher it was rewarding observing these students growing in confidence as they saw how their peers reacted to their leadership. Overall it was a very rewarding experience.

After a close overtime win against St Peter's Catholic College, Tuggerah in our opening game, the boys went on to win the next 5 games to claim the junior basketball title.
The team scored 189 points while allowing only 18 points being scored against them.
The squad was lead by top scorers Harry Bates, Jack Roberts and Mason Stafford. Top rebounders were Luke Marsters and Fynn Newell. Thomas Lawton, Zane Smith and Levi Bailey led the team in defense while Jacob Marsters, Rocco Crawford and Liam Hughes were key contributors off the bench.
Ms Alcorn commented on how the team kept playing better each game, and Mr Ellis said players stepped up and made big plays when the team needed it most.
The team was coached by Mr Odden and Ms Henderson.

Opens Rugby League
The Opens Rugby League team progressed to the City Final in the Schoolboy Trophy Competition on Thursday 22 August. The boys played a very big Chifley College team from Mt Druitt at Campbelltown Stadium.
On arrival at the ground they got to watch the powerful Blacktown Patrician Brothers and Endeavour Sports High School teams go at each other in the Tier A NSW semi-final. As we moved into the stadium and took our seats – we happened to be sitting across from our opposition. As a collective, the anxiety levels and nervous energy seemed to engulf them as the team sat very quietly.
The nervous tension seemed to hinder our start as the team took its time to get into rhythm. A lucky ricochet off a bomb saw a Chifley player pounce and open the scoring to lead 4-0. This seemed to trigger a reaction in the team as they realised, they needed to get into the game.
The boys started to play more direct and fight to win the ruck as they weathered the initial storm from Chifley. Their effort payed off as the bigger Chifley team started to tire. A slick backline movement saw us cross for our opening try and from there the floodgates opened. Sandon Smith scored a brilliant individual try, Daniel Peters kicked for Josh Woutersz to score in the corner and Boston Passeri backed up captain Levi Kasun to take the half-time score to 22-4.
The second half started much like the first. Chifley came out trying to get back into the game. The team defended three back-to-back sets on their own line as Chifley again grew tired. From there the boys again scored some fantastic team tries moving the ball from side to side. Owen Flaherty threw a fantastic cut-out pass to Beau Newlands, as he crossed for his second of the day. Chifley scored late, as we ran out winners 42-8.
The team now progresses to the Schoolboy Trophy grand final on Tuesday 10 September, again back at Campbelltown Stadium against Mt Ridley College (Victoria – NSW Country winner).
A big congratulations must go to all the boys in the squad. Since the schoolboy competition has changed to the Tier A & B concept, this is the best result the College has achieved so far. Well done boys.

Free Webinar – Step Back So Kids Step Up

Closing the expectation gap between what adults believe kids and young adults are capable of, and allowing them to create their own solutions to the challenges they face will greatly impact their resilience, and society as a whole.
