Founder’s Day 2023
Friday 18 August 2023: Celebrating Our College, Our Founder, and Our Community.
Founder's Day is an annual celebration where we honour our College and its visionary founder, Edmund Rice. It is a time for us to deepen our sense of community and commitment to serving others. Edmund Rice serves as a role model, teaching us the importance of standing with the disadvantaged, prioritising others, and being genuinely good human beings. Through his example, we strive to promote dignity and respect for our fellow men and women.
This year holds special significance in the history of St Edward's as it marks the 70th Anniversary of our esteemed College. With such a milestone occasion, the focus of Founder's Day in 2023 will revolve around this significant event. Each homeroom will embark on a project that encapsulates the spirit of Eddie's legacy. These projects will be completed on Friday during Week 5, fostering a stronger sense of community among students and raising vital funds for the education of Frederick Were, a student from Nairobi, Kenya, who the College has supported in past years. To support our sponsorship of Frederick, we kindly request students to bring in a Gold Coin donation. In return, they will receive a delicious sausage sandwich for lunch.
Numerous exciting projects are already in progress across different homerooms, ranging from candle making and collaborative artworks to frisbee golf and basketball shooting competitions. Some homerooms have organized bake sales and others raffle/guessing competitions to raise additional funds for Frederick's education. Prizes will be awarded to homerooms with the most creative projects and those that best embody the core values of our College and the St Edward’s spirit.
A special mention goes out to Mr Elliott Rozario’s homeroom and Mr Paul Buxton’s homeroom, who have gone above and beyond in their Founder’s Day project by holding a BBQ Breakfast fundraiser every Friday morning for the next 5 Weeks. They will be raising funds for “The Man Cave”, which is a Men’s mental health organisation run in Australia to support teenagers and young adults. They have started off amazingly well, with $212 already raised! Well done to both teachers and their students for giving back to the community and showcasing the amazing values instilled within students at St Edward’s.
We eagerly anticipate a day filled with fun and community-building activities, where our values of service and positive relationship building can truly shine through.
Mr Alex Rozario
Leader of Justice, Peace and Advocacy

Year 10 English
Year 10 English have been studying the topic “Who Calls Me Villain?”
They have explored how villains in literature often offer insight into a society’s deepest fears, and therefore shape views about good and evil, right, and wrong, morality and immorality. The unit included an analysis of a variety of texts such as The Bible, comic books, plays and films. To conclude their study, boys worked in small groups to plan, narrate, sketch, and publish an original comic book depicting conflict between a ‘modern day hero and villain’. They needed to apply the skills they learned throughout the term into comic book format. The boys had a ton of fun throughout the process, and commented that while challenged with time management, drawing, and composing a story, this was one of the best English tasks they’ve completed this year. Well done, boys!

Year 7 Technology
Mr Brown's Year 7 Technology class commenced Semester 2 with the promise of a hands-on and engaging semester.
The first project on the agenda was preparing their vegetable gardens. The class had spent the previous weeks learning about the importance of sustainable living and the benefits of growing their own food. Armed with this knowledge, they were now ready to put theory into practice.
Under Mr Brown's guidance, the students grabbed their trowels, feeling the thrill of the earth beneath their fingertips.
Inside the metal workshop, a whole new world awaited them. The air was filled with the scent of metal and the sound of clanking tools. With guidance and patience, the students began to craft their projects.
The semester had just begun, but the seeds of knowledge and enthusiasm that were sown will undoubtedly continue to flourish, leaving a lasting impact.

Witnessing Greatness at the FIFA Training Session
Behind the Scenes: Witnessing Greatness
In the world of football, the pinnacle of competition is undoubtedly the FIFA World Cup. Every four years, nations unite in their passion for the beautiful game, and teams strive to etch their names in history. But have you ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors before the players take centre stage on the grandest of footballing spectacles? St Edward's students were lucky enough to watch the England team train, revealing the dedication, precision, and teamwork required to chase the ultimate dream.
As we arrived, it was evident that this was no ordinary training session. The pitch at Central Coast Stadium was immaculate and set up, ready for the Lionesses to begin. Warm-up exercises were meticulously orchestrated, with every movement purposeful and deliberate. It was inspiring to see how they prepared their bodies and minds for the challenges that lay ahead. Contrary to popular belief, even the world's greatest players spent a significant amount of time practicing the fundamentals. We watched in awe as they practiced passing and shooting, focusing on technique and precision. The coach orchestrated drills that tested their decision-making abilities, strategic positioning, and fluid teamwork. The stadium reverberated with chants and cheers, painting a vivid picture of the global adoration for the sport and the players who inspire millions.
We departed with a renewed admiration for the beautiful game and the extraordinary athletes who breathe life into it. The World Cup might be the pinnacle of soccer, but witnessing the behind-the-scenes magic and meeting the players will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Futsal
Green Team
On Wednesday 21 June, the St Edward's Futsal Green Team competed against other highly skilled futsal schools to try and win the Futsal competition at Niagara Park. We tried our very best, competing against more experienced teams every game. At one stage we had a penalty shootout to see who would make third place because we were tied for second place. The amount of pressure we all felt as each team stood around to watch the shootout was nerve wracking. Sadly, we lost in the penalty shootout. We were undefeated up until then, winning each game by at least 3-4 goals! We sadly lost in the semi finals against Central Coast Grammar School, but achieved a 3rd place victory on the final table. This high paced game kept us on our toes the entire time. Overall, it was a fun experience and we all enjoyed it.

Blue Team
I was chosen to represent St Edward’s College for the Central Coast Region Futsal Championships. This was a day where you got a free day off school to play futsal with your friends and have an awesome time competing against other schools.
Throughout the day we played eight games in total, five of them which were pool games and St Edward's went undefeated and did not concede a single goal throughout all 5 pool games. This put us in first place on the ladder and a guaranteed spot in the quarter-finals.
Our first 2 matches were against Ku-Ring-Gai High School and Central Coast Sports College Y Team which we comfortably won 7-0 in both games. Our third match was against Brisbane Waters High School and was a lot tougher, however we came out ahead winning 1-0 with a cheeky back heel finish by me. Our fourth match was against Central Coast Sports College O Team and we won 2-0
In the quarter-finals we versed a strong Central Coast Sports College B Team and could not be separated by full time so we drew 1-1, which forced it to go into golden goal and we scored the winner which took us to the semi-final.
In the semi-final, we versed an even stronger Central Coast Sports College team and neither team could find the back of the net before full-time. So we went into golden goal again and we scored the winner to take the advance into the grand final.
The grand final was by far the strongest team we are going to play all tournament because they also went undefeated throughout the tournament which was Central Coast Sports College V Team. We went into the game knowing that they were going to be a very strong team, we played our hardest but were very unfortunate to lose the game 5-0. On a positive note, we still get to go to the state championships and have another shot at winning.
My overall experience for this fun day was pretty good because I still got a chance to have a great time with my mates and play some futsal against other schools.

Oztag Gala Day
Year 7 and 8
Year 7 started the day with a pretty tough draw and went down in the first game to MacKillop Catholic College. They came back against Wyong High School, winning comfortably by 6 and carried this energy through to their game against Henry Kendall High School, winning by 6-2. The toughest game of the day came last against Central Coast Sports College where they went down 7-2 with some questionable calls that shifted the game in their favour. There were high emotions throughout the day and the boys gave it their all, they should be very proud of their efforts and carry the positives into next year where they will be sitting at the top of the age group. Thank you to Luke Shereb and Fletcher Sommerville for coaching the side.
Year 8 cruised through most of their pool games showing great energy and moving the ball with style. They started off the day with a 5-1 win against Northlakes High School, and an equally comfortable win against Tumbi Umbi High School by 3. It was in their game against Kariong High School that they came across their first challenge, but still came home with the win in a low scoring match 2-1. To finish off their pool games they played the Steiner School and had another comfortable win 10-1. Finishing third on the ladder saw them matched up against Tumbi Umbi High School in the quarter final. Our boys came away with a 6-1 victory and went into the semi final with confidence. Unfortunately, after a couple of quick tries by Wadalba High School, our heads were down and we couldn’t get back in the game. It was a difficult loss for the boys who had left it all out on the field, but they should be proud of their efforts! Player of the day went to Matty Norman with a special mention to Cruz Tucker. A big thank you to Zane Smith and Sean Bullen for their inspirational coaching efforts!
Year 9
Our Year 9 team started the day on a high winning their first game against Lisarow High School 2-1. This was a difficult pool which saw them matched up with some very competitive teams and in their second game against Tumbi Umbi High School they just couldn’t hold on and went down 3-2 in another close game. In their game against the Central Coast Sports College they showed great determination and skill, however with a quick try off the kick off, Central Coast Sports College took the lead and we just ran out of time losing 2-1. This was a must win game to ensure we had a shot at the finals so for the next game the boys knew they had to work hard with for and against and hope for a little bit of luck to get through to the quarters. The boys came away with a convincing 7-3 win against Umina High School but it wasn’t enough to get us through to the finals with only the top team from our pool progressing. Year 9 should be proud of how they represented St Edward’s, they show a lot of promise for next year! Thank you to our student coaches Zane Smith and Sean Bullen for their leadership and inspiration on the day.
Year 10
Our Year 10 team confidently coasted through their pool winning all their matches comfortably. In the first round they came away with a 9-0 win against Narara Valley High School and following with a 12-0 victory over St Phillips Christian School. MacKillop Catholic College were able to get a few points on the board, but the boys were on a roll and took the win 7-3. Once again in their final pool game they showed their exceptional defence and try scoring ability, winning against Gorokan High School 9-0. Finishing on top of the ladder, the boys were confident going into the quarter final against St Peter's Catholic College but knew they had to step up if they wanted to progress. They came away with the win 5-2 and felt good going into the semi-final against Terrigal High School. The semi final was the toughest game so far and there was plenty of back and forth, but the boys sealed their position in the grand final with a 4-3 win. The grand final saw two exceptional teams face off, both with strong defensive skills, but in the end Berkley Vale High School took the win in a low scoring 2-1. The boys showed skill and finesse all day and will progress to the Champion of Champions in September.

Cochran Cup
The Under 14’s Rugby League Team travelled to Coffs Harbour to complete in the Cochran Cup.
Three games were played against some very tough opposition. The first game against Port Macquarie High School started off well with a try to Xavier McNeil in the corner for the boys to lead 4-nil. But Port Macquarie turned that around and scored 3 tries to run out winners.
The second game against Gunnedah High School was a must win. The defeat of the first game inspired the boys to a 16-nil win and a chance to progress to the final. The final game was extremely tough in the heat and playing against quality opposition in Maitland High School, we unfortunately ran out of troops and energy. Maitland ran in 5 tries but our boys fought to the very end. Notable performances included Isaac Wheatley, Kyston Treble and Captain Cooper Smith leading from the front.
