Year 12 Graduation Mass
The Year 12 Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Vince Casey was a fitting farewell for our students and their families.
At this Mass one of our students, Abhishek Thomas responded to the Gospel. His response was insightful and exemplified the characteristics that as a staff we aspire to instill in our students after six years at St Edward’s College.
The music provided by the students and our music staff was of the highest quality and provided much joy for those in attendance. During supper, after Mass, a wonderful convivial atmosphere prevailed in the foyer of the ERC as students, parents and the staff mingled. A highlight of the night was the rendition of the College song which will live long in the memory of our graduating class. The parent/staff choir surprised and impressed the congregation by performing two songs as a gift to the students. A big thank you to all those who contributed to this delightful occasion.
All images and videos shown at the mass will be available in the coming weeks via a link sent to email addresses.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly
Year 12 Farewell Assembly: Celebrating Achievements at St Edward’s College.
On Thursday, 26 September, the St Edward’s College community gathered in the ERC for a heartfelt Farewell Assembly to honor the Year 12 graduating class of 2024. Staff, students, and families came together to celebrate not only the culmination of high school but also the remarkable achievements of these young men during their time at the College.
The event was filled with nostalgia and pride as the College community reflected on the academic excellence and resilience displayed by the Year 12 students. Special recognition was given to those who completed external study this year, a testament to their commitment to learning beyond traditional classroom boundaries. External study allows students to engage in independent research, projects, and coursework, fostering self-directed learning and a deeper understanding of their subjects.
Among the graduates, several students received accolades for their accomplishments in vocational education, we also recognised the outstanding academic achievements of students across various subjects with the first and second place recipients.
Towards the end of the assembly the major award recipients were announced including the College Dux. We are proud to announce Christopher Dodd is the 2024 College Dux. A huge congratulations to Christopher and all the Award Recipients.
After receiving a standing ovation from the College community, the College Leaders proceeded to the official tree planting ceremony, a long-standing College tradition, at the lower grounds of the College. This fulfilled their final duty as St Edward's students and marked their induction into the College Old Boys' Union.
See the link below for all award recipients.

Jersey Day for RUOK
Ask R U OK? AnyDay because life happens every day.
A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.
By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.
At St Edward’s, we encourage you to Ask R U OK? Any Day of the year because a conversation could change a life. The students celebrated R U OK Week with Jersey Day on Friday 13 September, where students and staff wore their team Jerseys to celebrate the importance of the ‘team approach’ in being prepared to check in on each other, listen with empathy and encourage help-seeking behaviours when life gets hard.
Thanks to all involved, especially members of the Student Leadership Team who pitched the idea for ‘Jersey Day for R U OK’, marketed a campaign and presented at assembly the current statistics on mental health and suicide for young people in Australia and shared personally the transformative impact of asking R U OK?

PDHPE’s Wrap Up for Term 3
It's been another busy term for PDHPE students.
Year 7 PDHPE experienced different fundamental skills such as running, striking with their hands, feet and bats. They loved the new ‘catchtail balls’ and the challenges they brought. They had an introduction to respectful relationships by participating in the one day Junior Love Bites workshop. They also learned to recognise the 5 components of health and the factors that affect them. The Safe and Sound unit covers all sorts of risks and how to minimise them, from technology, drugs, surf safety to how to stay safe in the sun. To enhance this knowledge, a guest speaker from the Melanoma Institute came and spoke to the boys about how to stay safer in the sun and detect potential skin cancers.
[smallgallery fooid="55646"]
Year 8 PDHPE students practised their basketball skills and took on AFL with gusto and learned that it probably originated from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander game called Marngrook. In theory lessons they learned strategies to cope with and stop bullying. To complement this unit, they watched the Brainstorm production ‘Wired’ which is a thought provoking live performance that challenges students to reflect on cyberbullying, values and the responsible use of technology. They also continued to experience stress management techniques and wellbeing skills.
Year 9 PDHPE challenged stereotypes by experiencing wheelchair basketball and listening to a guest speaker talk about how he lives with disability and the challenges this creates. Our prac lessons such as blind athletics, seated volleyball, blind soccer, ‘on the knees’ table tennis and traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games also enhanced the theory by increasing awareness of diversity in order to avoid discrimination, harassment and vilification.
[smallgallery fooid="55575"]
Year 9 PASS learned how to analyse and appraise fad diets or physical activity regimes. They were also encouraged to design their own nutrition plan. They examined the contribution and impact of technology in sport. They were also wonderful ambassadors for our subject by helping the local and school communities by assisting with administration, refereeing and officiating at numerous primary school gala days and swimming carnivals.
Year 10 PDHPE spent more time learning how to develop and maintain respectful relationships. They also examined the extent and causal factors of road traffic crashes and how to respect others on the road. The boys were fortunate to travel to Sydney to take part in the bStreetsmart forum. This is a hard hitting, realistic view on road safety and the consequences of being reckless. The boys also got to try some experiential activities such as seeing the effects of alcohol through wearing ‘beer’ goggles and trying to hit a target. Real life education tips on what to look for when buying their first car, such as bald tyres, breaking systems, air bags, crumple zones etc.
[foogallery id="55568"]
10 PASS took on the difficult task of anatomy and physiology and the Body Systems and Energy for Physical Activity. This term saw the students participate in and learn about strategies and techniques that could be used to enhance performance.
Year 11 Outdoor Recreation VET course students completed their ‘Apply First Aid’ certificate and continued their fun with their 4 day camp. The boys and girls caught the Palm Beach Ferry from Ettalong, did a learn to surf lesson, before paddling kayaks across to The Basin. They had to set up tents, cook their own meals and then participate in fishing, hiking and mountain biking. It was an awesome adventure and Mr Summerhayes and Mrs Henderson loved leading the students on this experience. This topped off a great course where they also participated in a hike in Bouddi National Park, kayaking on the Brisbane Water and completing a basic water rescue at Gosford pool. I wish I was one of those students!
Year 11 PDHPE continued their investigation into the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems and how they influence body movement and efficiency. This term saw them analyse what health means to individuals, what influences their health and various health promotion initiatives. They also experienced their first 2 hour examination for PDHPE. They gained their First Aid Certificate with Central Coast First Aid Training. They will gain valuable life skills with experienced presenters who work on the frontline as Paramedics, Fire Fighters or Lifeguards.
11SLR participated in netball and hockey units and other games and sports. These boys and girls know how to have fun and enjoy some robust friendly competition banter during practical lessons
Year 12 PDHPE finished their course with plenty of time to study. They consolidated their knowledge of the syllabus by attending The Big Day Out for PDHPE in Sydney, which showcased guest speakers from various sports and health organisations. We wish them all the best for their future and hope their HSC results are what they worked for and deserved.
Year 12 SLR had fun trying their hand at golf, archery, badminton and table tennis. They just couldn’t get enough of any sport. A friendly rivalry game to finish off their school years.
Some fantastic, fun, relevant excursions and incursions to finish the year! What’s still to come?
Year 12 SLR: Aquatics at Gosford Pool (Oct/Nov) - Analysing a person’s stroke and correcting the technique.
Year 7 PDHPE: Water Safety at Gosford Pool (Nov) - performing life saving techniques to rescue themselves and others.
Year 10 PASS: Raw Challenge (Nov) - an obstacle course looking at fitness and FUN in the mud.
Year 10 PDHPE: Love Bites (Nov) - a one day workshop on respectful relationships.
Year 10 PDHPE: Mock Interviews (Nov) - during the Year 10 Activities weeks. One of the most life relevant experiences, an interview with employers from the ADF and local communities. Mrs Dignam has organised these interviews along with other life relevant activities such as work experience, Care of Country excursion and many others.
Year 9 PASS: Snorkelling and hiking – a great day at Bouddi National Park, fitness, care for environment, games and chilling.
Another full and engaging year in PDHPE. Life skills and knowledge to keep us healthy, safe and happy. Thanks to the PDHPE staff for delivering these courses over the year.

From Five Bucks to Big Bucks
Year 9 Commerce Founder's Day Project
The day finally arrived for the Year 9 Commerce students to showcase their entrepreneurial talents in the project, "From Five Bucks to Big Bucks." Founder’s Day provided the perfect opportunity to turn their $5 into more. Throughout the day, a range of activities kept everyone engaged. The boys were selling mixed lollies, raffle tickets, jelly cups, spider drinks, handballs and protein powder and shakers. One creative group had a student dress up in a squid costume, charging a small fee for people to snap a photo with him.
We have 54 students enrolled in Commerce. Each student received a $5 loan from the College. This was spent during our excursion to Erina Fair in Term 2. By the end of Founder’s Day, the boys were expected to not only repay the initial $270 loan but also generate a profit - and they did not disappoint.
Not only did we repay the College, but the boys also earned an additional $436.70 in profit. This money has been used to purchase 42 pairs of period underwear and 9 pairs of regular underwear for women living in the slums of Kenya. At the end of Term 3, Mr Bonnici, along with some of our Year 11 students, will personally deliver these items to the Mission. This contribution will make a significant difference in these women’s lives.
The boys fully embraced the project, showing a strong commitment to transforming simple items into marketable products. Every team sold out, and as their teachers, we could not be prouder of their efforts. Aspiring entrepreneurs in the making!

HSC Visual Art Bodies of Work
The recent HSC Bodies of Work Art Display at St Edward's College showcased a remarkable range of artistic talent and creativity.
Students explored diverse mediums and themes, demonstrating a deep understanding of their chosen artistic practices.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was the use of expressive forms such as textiles, ceramics, and photography. Textile artists crafted intricate tapestries and garments that told stories through color, texture, and pattern. Ceramic works ranged from delicate sculptures to functional pieces, showcasing the students' mastery of form and glaze. Photographers captured powerful images that challenged perceptions and evoked emotions. The use of Graphic Design was strong, with pieces including an entire book written and illustrated by one of the senior students.
The display also featured a variety of traditional art forms, including painting and drawing. Students experimented with different styles and techniques showcasing their range of subject matter - exploring themes such as identity, nature, and social issues.
The boys are to be congratulated on the high level of polish and quality of their work. They have demonstrated remarkable perseverance to continue the same level of dedication across an entire school year – well done, boys, St. Edward’s community is proud of you.

Oztag Open’s Team
The St Edward's College senior team had a spectacular showing at the All Schools Champion of Champions Oztag tournament held at The Kingsway in Penrith.
Over the course of two intense days, the team showcased their skills, resilience, and teamwork, making their mark as one of the best teams in the state.
We kicked off the tournament edging out Gungahlin College with a close 4-3 victory and dominated Pittwater High School 8-2. Our toughest challenge came against Matraville Sports High, where we pulled off an incredible win on the last play after the buzzer, thanks to an exceptional try by Cooper Jones and Nate Vaughan. We wrapped up the day with a hard-fought draw against Gilroy Catholic College.
The semi-final against Edmund Rice College was a test of grit and determination. With the match going into a drop-off, Cooper Jones, Nate Vaughan, Josh Brown, Riley Turner, and Owen Bell defended three sets of six on their try line before Cooper Jones sealed the victory with a breathtaking field-length try.
The grand final was a tough battle against St Dominic's Catholic College, where the team fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing 4-2.
It was a team effort with everyone proving themselves to be a valuable player, however some standouts were:
Josh Brown who consistently created space for the team and got over the line when we needed it most.
Riley Turner who excelled in defence and kicking, keeping the opposition on their toes.
Caleb Peterson who was always in the right spot in both attack and defence.
Cooper Jones who demonstrated great speed out wide, finding space and capitalising on opportunities.
Next year we will bring home the gold but for now…Congratulations to all of the players on securing the spot of the second best team in NSW:
Team
Josh Brown, Caleb Peterson, Riley Turner, Kevin Matthews, Ryder Kasun, Cooper Jones, Noah Best-Minto, Nate Vaughan, Archie Carpenter, Tevita Paea, Cruz McMahon, Flynn Carson, Owen Bell

Football Academy Match Reports
Being Named in the St Edward's College Football Academy Team
Written by: Louis Brocklebank
When I found out I had made the Football Academy, it was only then that I realized how much fun an opportunity it would offer. I’m sure my teammates feel the same way. From the very first week of training, I was excited to be part of a new team. I’ve already learned not only new football skills but also valuable lessons in teamwork. The academy is an incredible opportunity for anyone who chooses to take it.
In our first game, we played Lisarow High School. Even though we hadn’t played a proper match together before, we had great chemistry - it felt like we had been playing together for a whole year. Lisarow matched our skills right from the start. It was a tough battle at the beginning, but we managed to score the first goal, and from there, we found our rhythm, scoring again and again. Lisarow kept fighting back, so we had to push ourselves to our best. They scored a solid goal through a high press on our defense. We responded with a beautiful finish into the top corner, and finally, our striker chipped the keeper to score the last goal. The final score was 5-1 to St Edward’s. Some standout players included Lisarow’s center-back, who was strong defensively, and on our team, Benjamin Hayes, who netted a couple of great goals, and Remy Garner, whose dribbling skills led to two goals.
Our second game was against Terrigal United Football Club’s 14A team, which was a much tougher opponent than Lisarow due to their more experienced players. Terrigal was strong in pressing as a whole team, which made them harder to break down. Early on, we conceded a free kick after an unlucky back pass, and Terrigal capitalised with a shot into the top corner. Even though we were down, we kept our heads up, and soon our keeper's drop kick set up our striker, who volleyed it over the Terrigal goalkeeper to equalise. Unfortunately, Terrigal’s striker managed to dribble past our keeper and score again, leaving the final score at 2-1 in their favor. It was an evenly matched game, with standout performances from Terrigal’s keeper, Will, and on our team, Max Purkis, who was calm and composed on the ball, and Sketch Walters, who dominated the midfield.
In our final game of the term, we faced St Peter’s College Year 9 team. Like Lisarow, they gave us a tough start, but they couldn’t keep up with our fitness. Once we scored our first goal, the goals kept coming. Some brilliant through balls to Sketch Walters, Ben Hayes, and Remy Garner led to more goals. Jorge Chavez scored a fantastic goal from outside the box into the bottom corner, and Ben added another to finish the game 5-0. Top performers in this game included Ben Hayes, who scored twice, Seb Brocklebank, who delivered excellent through balls, and Ashton Mexon, who was rock solid in defense.
Overall, the Football Academy has been an amazing experience so far, and I’m sure it will continue to be for everyone who takes on the challenge.
St Edward's College Black Team vs Terrigal Football Club
Written by: Joseph Sanfilippo
On Wednesday night, St Edward's Academy Black Team played their first game against Terrigal. This was an important game not only for the Black Team as their debut match but also for the entire academy.
Unfortunately, things didn’t start as planned. During warm-up, Beau Louie, one of our best players, was badly injured and had to leave in an ambulance. It was a bit of a shock for everyone, but, after waving him off, we were determined to play for him. On top of this, since some of the St Edward's players had to play for their club, Terrigal, we were down to only 11 players which made it even harder for us. We knew it was going to be a tough game from the start.
Terrigal took advantage and scored first. Later, Fletcher Bush scored Terrigal’s second goal with a brilliant header. Seeing one of our own score against us was tough, however it was, admittedly, a great goal. Later in the game, things started to get exciting. Xavier smashed in a top-right penalty, our first-ever goal for St Edward's Academy Black Team. It was such a big moment for all of us. Then, right near the end, Eli Pepper scored a great goal after a brilliant assist from Eli Schultz, making the score 2-2. Sadly, Terrigal scored a very late goal to make it 3-2, making it a hard-fought but tough loss for us in the end.
Even though it was a difficult game, and we were low on numbers, everyone fought really hard, and we’ll remember this match for the effort and teamwork we showed. It was a memorable start to many games to come.
St Edward's College vs St Peter's Catholic College
Written by Nicholas Snelson
St Edward's showcased a dominant performance in their 3-0 win over St Peter's Catholic College on Friday, 13 September, with notable contributions from Eli "Pepps" Pepper and Krishay Jamnadas.
The match started with St Edward's quickly asserting their control. Eli Schultz played a key role in setting up Eli Pepper, who opened the scoring with a well-placed shot, giving St Edward's a 1-0 lead. The team’s attacking prowess was evident as they pressed forward with purpose.
As the match progressed, St Edward's continued to build on their advantage. A penalty awarded to St Edward's was confidently converted by Eli Pepper, increasing the lead to 2-0. This goal demonstrated his composure and skill under pressure, reinforcing St Edward's commanding position.
St Peter's struggled to find a way back into the game, facing St Edward's defence that effectively neutralised their attacking efforts. In the final moments, St Edward's capitalised on their dominance as Joey Sanfillippo provided the assist for Krishay Jamnadas to score, sealing the match with a 3-0 lead.
Throughout the match, St Edward's exhibited a blend of solid defensive work and clinical finishing. The team’s performance was a testament to their strength and cohesion, earning them a well-deserved victory and showcasing their readiness for upcoming challenges.

Under 14’s Rugby 7’s
On a hot Spring day, we drove south to Rat Park at Warringah to compete in the Broken Bay Rugby Sevens Tournament.
Our first match was against St Peter’s Catholic College and from the outset it was clear that we were here to play. Sunny Straker scored a hat-trick of tries, together with Kaiden Regattieri and Nat O’Shea both crossing the line to secure a 29-12 win.
The next game was against St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly and this was our best performance of the day. Tries were scored by Austin Willis, Joshua Marsters, Cooper Djuricin, Damian Coughlan-Berg, Fraser Boake and Kaiden Regattieri. The final score read 38-7; a convincing win.
Next up was the strong Mater Maria Catholic College side and this one went right to the wire, fortunately we came away with a 26-24 win thanks to tries from Austin Willis, Kaiden Regattieri, Sunny Straker, and Saint Levae. This win pitted us against St Brigid’s Catholic College who were the other standout team of the day. We had to play them in a pool match and then the final, so backing up in the scorching heat was always going to be difficult. The pool match ended with a loss of 10-22 (Austin Willis and Cooper Armstong scored tries), but the boys rallied for the final and competed to the dying seconds. Unfortunately, St Brigid’s proved too strong on the day and they won the final 22-17 in what was an entertaining, yet heartbreaking, game of rugby. Tries to Fraser Boake, Cooper Armstrong and Kaiden Regattieri were recorded, yet every single St Edward’s player contributed to the team and represented the school with pride.
Team
Fraser Boake, Cooper Armstrong, Austin Willis, Kaiden Regattieri, Ray Peterson, Brendan Lin, Sunny Straker, Joshua Marsters, Cooper Djuricin, Saint Levae, Cohen Mizzi, Damian Coughlan-Berg, Nat O’Shea.

CSBB Golf Championship
On Thursday 5 September, the St Edward’s College Golf team competed in the CSBB Golf Championship.
This year, the event was once again held at the scenic Gosford Golf Club, where the players enjoyed perfect spring conditions for a day of golfing excellence.
The team kicked off their day with an early start, teeing off at around 10:30 am. The course was in excellent shape, and the boys were eager to take on the challenge. Cameron Wherle, Kai Tower and Shaylan Bennett led the team, setting a great example for the younger players who took the opportunity to hone their skills and bond as a team while waiting for their turn.
This year, the St Edward’s team fielded a strong lineup, with a larger team than the last couple of years. The team gave their best effort to compete against the other CSBB school teams. St Edward's dominated the Senior Boys with Jack Alexander taking 1st Place and Kai Tower runner up. Lucas Binns in Year 8, once again impressed, taking out runner up for the Intermediate Division. With solid performances from Cameron, Shaylan, and many of our juniors, the team secured an impressive position at the top of the leaderboard.
The day was a success, with ideal conditions - clear skies and no wind - making it a memorable experience for all. We look forward to returning next year with a full team, ready to compete once again.

Understanding Concussion and Return to Learn and Sport Guidelines
Concussion is a type of brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body that disrupts normal brain function.
It's important for parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms, as well as the appropriate steps for recovery to ensure the safety and well-being of their child.
Common symptoms of concussion include:
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Difficulty concentrating
Sensitivity to light or noise
Memory problems
If your child sustains a concussion, it’s essential to follow a structured recovery plan. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) provides comprehensive concussion management guidelines. The guidelines emphasize gradual reintegration into both academic and sporting activities to prevent further injury.
Return to Learn
The AIS recommends a period of rest from cognitive activities, which may involve time off school. Once symptoms have improved, students can return to a reduced school workload, slowly increasing their capacity over time. Teachers and support staff will adjust the academic expectations to match the student's recovery rate.
More detailed information on returning to academic activities can be found here: Parents/Teachers | Concussion in Australian Sport (concussioninsport.gov.au)
Before returning to sport, it's critical that students complete a staged recovery process. Each stage should only be progressed if the student remains symptom-free. Full participation in sports should only resume following medical clearance, typically around 14 days after the injury for mild cases.
To review the AIS's recommendations for returning to physical activities, visit: Parents/Teachers | Concussion in Australian Sport (concussioninsport.gov.au)
By following these guidelines, we can ensure that our students recover safely and return to their activities without risking further harm. If you suspect your child has a concussion, consult a healthcare professional for assessment and personalized guidance.
