News from the Religious Education Faculty
Year 7 - Oracy Program
Year 7 are currently working on an Oracy program in their Religion classes. By using the skill of effective discussion and listening, and how to use ‘talk’ as a learning tool, students will explore the stories within the Old Testament, (Abraham, Moses, David and Noah). The intention is for all students to have a critical awareness of what it is to be a ‘good speaker and listener’ in a variety of situations. Students will be learning about rules for talk, creating good discussions and communication skills through activities like Lego, Mingo Bingo and the M&M game, whilst learning the importance of Covenants in the Old Testament.
Year 11 - Visit to Mosque
On 23 August, the Year 11 Studies of Religion 2 unit students visited the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque. The students engaged in conversation with the presenter on the Religious tradition, Islam and learnt about the rituals, beliefs and teachings of this religion. Students were able to see inside a Islamic place of worship and this allowed them to develop an Interfaith dialogue with our presenter. They then shared a Halal meal together. Thank you to Mr Anderson and Mr Beacroft for assisting with the day.

English – Epic Quests
On 16 August, all of Year 7 had an English immersion for their study of ‘Epic Quests’.
They were able to learn new skills in Minecraft, Fusion for 3D printing and collaborate with their peers in building a castle. This will link to their writing in English this term. Thanks go to our helpers from Year 9 and 10 – Jesse Kemp, Aiden Balshaw, Geoffrey French, Easun Zhang, Finn Leary, Joshua Malek, Joshua Mangan and Logan Merceia.
This is what some of the Year 7 boys had to say about their experience.
“My favourite part about this incursion was making a fortress in Minecraft next to my friends. I liked that I got to choose who I worked with and that the activity was fun.” Derik
“My favourite part was being able to work as a group and be able to help each other design things digitally and in real life”. Knox
“My favourite part of this incursion was making the castles out of paper. I really enjoyed this, because with a time limit, I found a sense of competition to build the best castle in the library”. Joshua
Congratulations to the winners of the Castle build:
First – Noah, Lenox, Jacob B, Kobi and Alex
Second – Blake, Liam, Travis and Krishay
Third – Fletcher, Buda, Lachy, Liam and Julian

Music Performances
Year 12 Music Evening
On Monday night our wonderful Year 12 Music students performed a selection of their pieces to a very appreciative audience of family, friends and staff.
It was a fitting evening celebrating their efforts and achievements over the HSC Music course and an opportunity to share their love of music and performance skills with a wider audience before sitting for their HSC performance examination in Week 9.
This event was expertly crewed by the Year 11 Entertainment class who did an excellent job.
The atmosphere in the room and sense of connection our performers felt supporting their peers was truly lovely to be part of. We wish all our Year 12 Musicians the very best and we are very proud of their accomplishments.
Performance for Year 8
On Tuesday Year 8 were treated to a Music concert featuring some of our HSC Music students and some up and coming performers from Years 10 and 11. The event was crewed by Year 12 Entertainment students. The concert showcased a diverse range of genres and was performed to a very enthusiastic audience, providing our musicians with an avenue to hone their performance skills. The performers are to be congratulated on their excellent contributions to the event and Year 8 are to be commended on their exemplary behaviour as an engaged and supportive audience.

School Sport Australia – Baseball Championships (August 14 -20).
[caption id="attachment_38830" align="alignright" width="167"] Parker Robinson[/caption]
Well done to Parker Robinson in Year 12, on his continued success at the National Schools Championships at Blacktown. Parker had a fantastic week captaining the NSW All Schools team on their unbeaten run, unfortunately falling short in the final against QLD. He was rewarded for a great week and his tremendous efforts in being awarded the MVP in the final against QLD, received the ‘Golden Glove’ Graeme Webb Memorial Fielding Award and to cap-off a great week, was selected in the All-Australian Team.
A remarkable achievement by Parker and certainly highlights the many years of hard work he and his family have applied to his Sport.

Open Rugby League – Schoolboy Competition
The Opens team continued their ongoing success in the Schoolboy competition. On Thursday 18 August, the team travelled down to Campbelltown Stadium to play in the NSW City Cup Finals.
In a challenging draw, the team was required to play back-to-back games against Ashcroft High School (Western Sydney) and VIC University (Melbourne), with the winner progressing to the NRL Schoolboy Trophy Final. Both games would be 2 x 20 min halves.
On the back of the draw, most boys have also been dealing with their local finals and because of this we lost Emmet Nicholls in Year 12 and Jack Legge in Year 12 due to injury from the weekend’s games. Fortunately, Tom Whitmore in Year 11 took the opportunity to come into the side and did a fantastic job for us on the day.
In our game against Ashcroft, we played a near faultless first half, completing our sets and kicking long into the corners. The idea was to run the big boys from Ashcroft around and take some of the energy out of them. Just after the half-time break we scored our fifth try to extend our lead to 24-0. Ashcroft scored two late tries to see a final score of 24-12. We had achieved our first goal for the day and now onto VIC University.
In the game against VIC University, we were a bit apprehensive at the start. The game plan was the same as they had a very big side as well, but it took us a few minutes to find our groove. We went to the break in a good position leading 12-6 but we had gained a lot of confidence in the way we had gone about the first half. In the second half we ran away with the game scoring some fantastic tries and utilising the vast space of the stadium to our advantage, eventually winning 38-6.
The result meant not only being crowned City Cup Champions, but we now have the chance to defend the Schoolboy Trophy we hold from the pre-covid 2019 team. Something that all the boys are very motivated to achieve.
In a small reward for the difficult draw we faced, the team will now play a home final. The Schoolboy Trophy Final will now be played at CCRSC Tuggerah on Wednesday 21 September at 1.45 pm.

Careers – Your ATAR
Your ATAR: How Important is it Really?
In those final years of school, it’s easy to feel like your entire life is hinging on one thing: your ATAR.
You might be consumed by thoughts about what will happen if you don’t get the score you ‘need’. This probably isn’t helped by teachers, parents and friends also talking about it all the time!
But ask any working adult about their ATAR, and you’ll probably get the same answer: they can’t even remember theirs!
ATAR does play a role at this point in your life, but it is just one part of a much larger puzzle for what your future holds and how you’ll go after the things you want.
We’re here to drop some truth bombs about how important your ATAR really is – and what else you can focus on in the years ahead.

We know that the 2 most important people involved in the career decision making process for a young person is the careers advisor and parent. That being said we are also aware that parents have busy lives and are often time poor and unable to attend events due to other commitments.
The Parent Engagement Event held on the 9th August was a great opportunity for parents and carers to hear from Skillsone, Skillsroad & Industry Experts about what are the jobs of the future whilst gaining invaluable insights into what our employers are looking for when employing youth.
We also conducted a live poll on the evening of the event and would like to hear from those who were unable to attend the event. This will provide great data about how our youth and their parents are feeling, what types of options they are considering for the future and what type of information and assistance they may be needing.

Dad-Proof Tip: Strengthening Your Relationship With Your Son
When dads work to strengthen the relationship with their son, it not only positively impacts the relationship, but his development too.
Fathers have a strong influence on their sons, sometimes without even realising it. The most important way fathers influence their sons is by spending time with them and by being involved in their lives. There is clear evidence now that boys with dads actively involved in their lives do better emotionally, socially and academically.
Top Tips
Be a positive male role model. Know that your son is always watching you to establish understanding around what it means and what it looks like to be a man, a father, a husband and a friend. Give him positive messages.
Do things together. Boys (and men) open up more when they are doing something together, shoulder to shoulder. This creates a bond and opportunity for open conversation and sharing.
Play with him. As well as showing boys how to control their bodies and their strength, fathers play an important role in helping their sons manage their emotions through physical play.
Share and talk about feelings and emotions. If you and your son are comfortable sharing your feelings and you help guide him to manage his emotions, he will have far better wellbeing outcomes throughout life.
Show them how to treat and respect others. This will set the foundation for the relationships he will have later in his life. Your son will watch how you interact with others, including your partner. He will learn about respect (or disrespect), about how men treat women, and about how men deal with conflict and differences from you.
Tell him you love him and are proud he is your son. Your approval and encouragement is very important to your son. Let him know he is loved regardless of performance, results or mistakes. He needs to hear the words that let him know you are proud to have him as your son.
