Challenges at Year 10 Camp
On Monday 14 October, Year 10, accompanied by 13 enthusiastic staff members, headed to the Snowy Mountains.
Our first stop was Suttons Forest McDonald’s to fuel up for the exciting week ahead, followed by a stretch break in Cooma, and then we arrived at our base camp, ALI Bungarra in Jindabyne.
Tuesday greeted us with a chilly start, reminding us we were in the snowy mountains. The boys quickly engaged in the activities, which included a raft challenge on Lake Jindabyne, abseiling near the Jindabyne Dam, a hike up Mt Twynam - Australia's third highest mountain at 2,195 meters - and mountain biking. From Tuesday to Thursday evenings, four groups camped overnight in tents in Kosciuszko National Park, either at Island Bend or Thredbo Diggings. Fortunately, the weather was milder on Wednesday and Thursday, perfect for shorts and t-shirts.
Each day, the boys faced physical challenges and rose to the occasion, though a few moans and groans - which goes with teenage territory - could be heard. The food was plentiful, and the boys expressed their gratitude. We witnessed some remarkable individual achievements as students overcame their fears, and many demonstrated incredible perseverance and resilience. As a whole, I couldn't be prouder of the entire cohort. Watching the boys shine outside the classroom and engage with one another in a supportive manner was truly rewarding.
A big thank you to Mrs Kellie Atkinson for her exceptional administrative support and to the wonderful staff who cared for the boys throughout the week: Mrs Henderson, Mr Foster, Mr Isbester, Mr Kane, Mr Le Page, Mr Lynch, Mr Mills, Mr Gentle, Mr Papi, Mr Karakatsanis, Mr Buxton and Mr E Rozario.

The Latest from the English Faculty
This semester, the English Faculty had the pleasure of hosting several exciting incursion events that brought literature and language to life for our students.
Year 10 students delved into the world of Wilfred Owen’s poetry with the help of Poetry in Action, who presented the dynamic show Words of War. This powerful performance showcased some of Owen's most iconic poems, including Dulce et Decorum Est and Anthem for Doomed Youth. Through this engaging performance, students gained a greater appreciation of Owen’s work and were encouraged to critically examine the impacts of war through his poetic lens.
For Year 9, Poetry in Action returned with Riots & Revolutions!, an energetic introduction to speech writing. This captivating performance featured iconic speeches such as Greta Thunberg’s climate plea, Charlie Chaplin’s call for unity, and Malala Yousafzai’s fight for education. Students were introduced to Aristotle’s modes of persuasion—ethos, pathos, and logos—and explored how powerful language can inspire and drive change.
Both Year 7 and 8 students were treated to The Poets’ Quest!, a humorous and educational show that brought essential poetic techniques to life. From rhyme and rhythm to imagery and theme, this performance was a thrilling mix of excitement and learning, designed to ignite a passion for poetry in our youngest learners.
Each of these incursion events not only entertained our students but also deepened their understanding of the transformative power of language and literature.
Book in a Day Competition
At the end of Term 2, St Edward's College held its first-ever 'Write a Book in a Day' competition, with students from Years 7 to 10 collaborating in year groups to write short stories. The task challenged students to create uniquely Australian narratives within a specific word limit and to include 10 assigned words such as jubilance, retaliate, and revelation. Despite some initial tension during brainstorming, the groups worked through the creative process, splitting into smaller teams to write, edit, and finalise their stories by the 3:30 pm deadline. Their hard work resulted in a published collection of short stories now available in the school library.
The Year 10 group, consisting of William Pollard, Gus Brady, Lachlan O’Brien, Ruben Borg, Thomas Perham, and Will Haines, won first place for their story Ashbury Case and took home $50 Bookface vouchers. The Year 7 group, made up of Jack Hardy, Charlie Wilcock, Charlie Al Chahin, Josh Debenham, Bryce Johnson, and Daniel Drury, was named runners-up for their story Outback Mates and received writing journals. Other participating students included Zeke Black, William Casey, Riley Howell, Billy McCarthy, Joshua Reid, and Vraj Patel from Year 8, as well as Daniel Bates, Max Klein-Schiphorst, Noah Lockwood, Beau Louie, and Phillip Yoon from Year 9. Congratulations to all students for their creativity and teamwork!

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Each year, October is recognised worldwide as Dyslexia Awareness month, a time to come together to raise awareness, share resources and tell stories about dyslexia success.
Did you know?
Dyslexia is one of the most common learning difficulties affecting 5-10% of people.
Children and adults with dyslexia can have difficulties with accurate and fluent word recognition, spelling, writing and reading comprehension.
Students with dyslexia can improve their reading and spelling skills with evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention.
Dyslexia is not a vision issue and cannot be resolved by vision interventions such as coloured glasses or eye exercises.
SPELD NSW is an organisation which support children and adults with specific learning difficulties. They offer support, advise, resources and professional learning to both teachers and parents.
This month, they are offering a FREE Understanding Dyslexia on-line course! This professional learning opportunity is perfect for parents to help support their son/s in the home setting.
Register now and access the course anytime during October.

Berg Shield Cricket
Berg Shield Round 1
The 2024/25 cricket season for the College commenced under picturesque skies at “Royal Hylton” this past Tuesday. It’s always nice to begin the season with a local derby, and for this fixture we were challenged by St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah.
After winning the toss, St Peter’s elected to bat. James McCann (2/15) got St Edward’s off to a flying start, taking two wickets in his first over and having St Peter’s rattled early at 2/2. Some defensive lapses allowed our opponents back in the game. Our spinners then entered the fray, limiting scoring opportunities. In a case of “why didn’t we throw him the ball earlier?”, Nick Snelson bowled the final over of the innings capturing a remarkable 3/2.
Our batting innings was steady from the outset. Hugh Wheeler (39) and Harry Tobin (29) controlled some tight bowling and chased down the target with four overs remaining.
Final result: St Edward’s 4/99 def St Peter’s 8/98.
