Day in the Life at St Edward’s College
Day in the Life at St Edward's College is an opportunity for Year 6 students to experience what it’s like to be an 'Eddies' boy.
Year 6 boys from over 30 primary schools attended the College on Thursday 9 March 2023, where they experienced typical lessons across a number St Edward's College subject areas. Year 6 took part in experiments in Science; French quizzes and groupwork making the Eiffel tower; water colour painting and lino printing in Visual Arts; playing various instruments and designing a song on the computers in Music; making a wooden box in TAS; sporting activities in our Edmund Rice Centre in PDHPE. The boys also got the opportunity to visit the College Library and complete activities with our Library staff.

Adventures at Year 9 Camp
On Wednesday 8 March, Year 9 arrived at school early to embark on their camp at Wee Jasper, southwest of Yass. It was a different climate compared to what the boys are used too, say goodbye to 20-degree nights and welcome to 4-degree fresh Autumn air.
The energy of the boys after they hopped off a four-and-a-half-hour bus ride was high, as they were eager to eat some lunch and get stuck into an afternoon of activities. They had some downtime after their first activity, many played touch football and cricket, while others preferred to sit with friends and share stories. We had a night bushwalk to wind down ahead of a massive day two, as the boys were required to complete three activities.
Students were given a goal ahead of camp, to talk to someone new over the three days. It was great to see that most boys did that, many making new friends over the three days. It was also pleasing to see each student giving all activities a go, making this camp one that will be remembered forever.
College and camp staff were so pleased with the behaviour and efforts of the boys. In fact, a member of the public who was camping there shared positive feedback and was extremely impressed by how the boys expressed themselves.
Onto Jindabyne in Year 10!

Celebrating Maths Week
This year Maths Week was held in Week 7, 13-17 March.
Each day, in the student notices, a Maths puzzle was displayed for all students to attempt. During lunch time, activities were organised in the Library for students to participate in and get that Math’s brain thinking. Activities included mathematics of chance, the numbers game and a knockout chess tournament.
All week numerous students supported these activities and the organisers of Maths Week appreciated their support and participation.
On Wednesday 15 March all Year 8 Mathematics classes participated in the external program Inquisitive Minds. The Inquisitive Minds team ran each class through a series of Mathematical problem solving challenges that required students to use and apply their knowledge and skills to successfully attempt and solve activities presented. At times, as I watched students in the ERC participate in the program, their enthusiasm to work with a peer and solve problems in a time constraint manner was inspiring. Congratulations to all Year 8 students who participated on the day and as some students commented, prizes offered such as chocolate was a clear incentive to produce successful outcomes!
On Friday, Maths Week was wrapped up with a full school assembly in the ERC. A summary of the week, including photos displayed on screen, informed the school community of the many activities conducted during the week. Then the annual Pi recital competition was held. Students who participated in recital had to state a digit in the Pi sequence as the microphone moved from student to student. This required students to be able to recall Pi to a significant number of places but also concentrate on where the sequence was up to when it came to their turn to recite the next number.
Congratulations to the eventual winner Max Corrigan in Year 10 and our runner up Hoi Tin Ho in Year 7.
The organisation and running of the week would not be possible without the help of a number of staff and students. Kerry Friend for photography, the Library staff, the Academic portfolio chaired by Ms Elena Atayde and Year 12 students Kenan Fonseka, William Lynch, Oliver Martin, Bradley Plummer and Thomas Whitmore, my thanks for your organisation and assistance running events throughout the week.
Thank you to Mr Alex Isbester for his tireless enthusiasm and organisation of the inquisitive minds incursion for Year 8, as well as Mr Frank Samyia and other staff members for their support during the week.
In summary a very successful week showcasing Mathematics at the College.
Mr Richard Massey
Leader of Learning Mathematics

Year 12 Business Studies Excursion
On Tuesday 14 March, Year 12 Business Studies students attempted to travel to Cardiff to visit the Tony White Group Motor Trade.
Part of studying the Business Studies course, requires students to examine contemporary business issues and investigate aspects of business using hypothetical situations and actual business case studies when addressing the content.
Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to Cardiff with a multi-car accident on the M1 near the Dog Trap Road overpass preventing us from travelling anywhere. After sitting on the freeway for 2 hours, cabin fever was brewing and we made the decision to turn back to school with an hour remaining in the trip to Cardiff, otherwise we would have had to turn around shortly after arriving.
The morning wasn’t a total loss. We counted 24 emergency services drive pass – 5 ambulances, 10 tow trucks, 6 police, 3 firefighters and one woman who decided to get out of her car and walk her dog. We also added a quick McDonalds stop to observe the operations and promotional areas of this business.

Under 13’s Touch Football
The Under 13's Touch Football team participated in the Broken Bay Junior Touch competition held at Doyalson Oval and played a series of games against other competing Catholic Schools.
The first game of the day was scheduled against St Brigid's Catholic College, and the boys started the game strong, opening the scoring early. St Edward's continued to play fast and elusive throughout the game, resulting in no points being scored against them and coming away with the first win of the day.
The second game was against St Peter's Catholic College and the team was full of confidence from their performance in Round 1. This game started differently to their previous, with St Edward's allowing a try early putting them on the back foot. The boys rallied after being behind for most of the first half and, moving into the second half, they finished the game strong scoring quick consecutive tries to push the score beyond reach of St Peter's and taking out a second game.
The third and final pool game was against St Leo's Catholic College. St Edward's started the game strong and were punishing in their sets, making metres easily through our fast and agile middles. The majority of the game was back and forth, with both teams grinding for metres each set. The boys toughed out a tougher match to take the final win of the pool games, only conceding two tries throughout.
From being undefeated and top of the Pool A, St Edward's moved into the semi final and were to verse the runners up from the other pool. Following suit from the other matches played throughout the day, St Edward's came out strong, scoring early tries and eventually holding the opposing team to only two tries throughout the match. With some excellent work from our players, Eddies came away with the win and progressed to the grand final.
This would be the toughest match of the day, playing another undefeated side, St Augustine's Catholic College. This team, who play on weekends together, were very well drilled and came out of the gates extremely strong. Trading set for set, eventually saw the St Augustine's side take a 1-0 lead going into half-time. St Edward's fought their way back into the game but had several tries disallowed. The opposing team were very clinical in their response to Eddie's attack, holding them out and scoring another try late in the second half to seal the win.
The Under 13's side played with courage and enthusiasm the entire day and represented the College exceptionally well. Special mention to St Edward's fearless captain, Nate Herring, who led by example and George Houghton and Ray Peterson who played extremely well in all games throughout the day. This day would not have been possible without the support of Mr Jason Carpenter for his organisation and Mr Alex Rozario, who assisted in the team selection process leading up to game day.

Male Connect
Growing up can be tough on kids, especially when they start to notice changes in their body.
We’ve all been there - but the big difference with kids today is the constant comparisons everywhere on social media!
It's natural for them to feel self-conscious about how they look, but you play a big part in empowering them to make them feel confident and secure.
Remember your dad duties - keep an eye on what they might be seeing online and remind them that everyone's different and that's what makes them unique!
Top Tips
Remind your child to look beyond their appearance and appreciate their unique qualities, like their personality, talents, and interests.
Help them develop realistic expectations about their body image by discussing together the unhealthy and unrealistic standards promoted by celebrities and social media influencers.
Show support as your child experiments with new styles and looks, as this is a way for them to explore their identity and self-expression.
