Goodbye, Good Luck Year 12
The Final Day
What a fitting way to end six years of High School for our graduating class of 2022. The day started with a BBQ breakfast which, as always, was very well received by the boys. It was wonderful to see both staff and students coming together and talking about future opportunities over a bacon and egg roll. Recognition from the whole school community came about in the form of a guard of honour walk through, which took the boys around the quad to a standing ovation from the rest of the student body.
This walk ended with the traditional tree planting ceremony. The boys also got to play their end of year game of touch and football on the oval. These high stakes games were played in great spirit and with great energy. There was also an opportunity for some to go and support the Opens Rugby league team competing in the National Schoolboy Trophy which was a fantastic occasion and great to see so many supporting their school mates.
The day finished with a combined mass and awards ceremony. This was a truly special way to finish and it was wonderful to see so many proud parents and family members in the audience. Congratulations to all the award winners and special mention to the Sportsman of the Year, Sebastian Plaister and the College Dux of 2022, Fergus Clydesdale.
We wish all the boys and their families every success over the coming weeks and months and look forward to seeing what this group of young men can achieve.
Mr Alex Powell

Graduation Mass
The Year 12 Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Vince was a fitting farewell for our students and their families. At this Mass one of our students, Luke Richards responded to the Gospel. His response was insightful and exemplified the characteristics that as a staff we aspire to instill in our students after six years at St Edward’s College.
The music provided by the students and our music staff was of the highest quality and provided much joy for those in attendance. During supper, after Mass, a wonderful convivial atmosphere prevailed in the foyer of the ERC as students, parents and the staff mingled. A highlight of the night was the rendition of the College song which will live long in the memory of our graduating class. A big thank you to all those who contributed to this delightful occasion.
Mr Anthony Beacroft
Director of Mission

News From the PDHPE Faculty
We are getting back to normality with some excursions and incursions going ahead this year!
Year 7 PDHPE
Year 7 honed their Track and Field skills in preparation for the Athletics carnival. They also experienced different fundamental skills such as running, striking with their hands, feet and bats. They learned to recognise the five components of health and the factors that affect them. The Safe and Sound unit covers all sorts of risks and how to minimise them, from technology, drugs, surf safety, to how to stay safe in the sun. To enhance this knowledge, a guest speaker from the Melanoma Institute came and spoke to the boys about how to stay safer in the sun these holidays and over summer.
Year 8 PDHPE
Year 8 students practised their basketball skills and took on AFL with gusto and learned that it probably originated from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander game called Marngrook. In theory lessons they studied why people take risks and analysed their own behaviour. They continued to experience stress management techniques and built help-seeking skills.
Year 9 PDHPE
Year 9 rehearsed their athletics skills for the carnival. During Term 3 they experienced many different games that are played by people who are at a disadvantage due to a disability or racism. Some of the activities were blind athletics, seated volleyball, blind soccer and ‘on the knees’ table tennis. They also participated in some traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games. The prac lessons complemented the theory which also looked at ‘Challenging Stereotypes’, by increasing awareness of diversity in order to avoid discrimination, harassment and vilification.
[foogallery id="39681"]
Year 9 PASS
Year 9 learned how to analyse and appraise fad diets or physical activity regimes. They were also encouraged to design their own nutrition plan. Term 3 they examined the contribution and impact of technology in sport.
Year 10 PDHPE
Year 10 spent more time learning how to develop and maintain respectful relationships. Term 3 saw Year 10 examining the extent and causal factors of road traffic crashes and how to respect others on the road. The boys were fortunate this year as they had the opportunity to travel to Sydney to take part in the bStreetsmart forum. This is a hard hitting, realistic view on road safety and the consequences of being reckless. The boys also got to try some experiential activities such as seeing the effects of alcohol through wearing ‘beer’ goggles and trying to hit a target.
[foogallery id="39687"]
Year 10 PASS
Year 10 took on the difficult task of anatomy and physiology and the Body Systems and Energy for Physical Activity. Term 3 saw the students participate in and learn about strategies and techniques that could be used to enhance performance.
Year 11 Outdoor Recreation
Year 11 VET course students completed their ‘Apply First Aid’ certificate and continued their fun with their four day camp. Boys caught the Palm Beach Ferry from Ettalong, did a learn to surf lesson with fairy penguins dropping in, before paddling kayaks across to The Basin. Boys had to set up tents, cook their own meals and then participate in hiking and mountain biking. It was an awesome adventure and Mr Gentle and Mrs Henderson loved leading the boys on this experience.
Year 11 PDHPE
Year 11 continued their investigation into the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems and how they influence body movement and efficiency. Term 3 saw them analyse what health means to individuals, what influences their health and various health promotion initiatives. They also experienced their first 2 hour examination for PDHPE and are getting set for their HSC year starting Term 4.
11SLR
Year 11 delved into the roles and responsibilities of a coach, including aspects of coaching sessions such as the psychology needed to deal with athletes. The students also participated in a netball unit and other games and sports. These guys know how to have fun and enjoy some robust friendly competition banter during practical lessons
Year 12 PDHPE
Year 12 finished their course with plenty of time to study. They consolidated their knowledge of the syllabus by attending The Big Day Out for PDHPE in Sydney, which showcased guest speakers from various sports and health organisations. We wish them all the best for their upcoming HSC exams.
Year 12 SLR
Year 12 finished their aquatics human movement analysis at Gosford pool. They then had fun trying their hand at badminton and tried to beat Mr Ellis at table tennis. They just couldn’t get enough of it.
Again, thank you to the versatile PDHPE staff for making the boys theory and prac lessons so life relevant and worthwhile.
WARNING: UNIFORM BLITZ Term 4.
The PDHPE staff have noticed the slide away from the boys wearing the correct full PDHPE uniform. In order to participate fully and avoid an afternoon detention, the boys are required to wear the correct shirt, shorts, white or black socks, joggers and a hat. If any part of this uniform is missing without a parental explanatory note, the boys will be unable to participate in the lesson. Hygiene and sun safety are at the forefront of our thinking.

Year 9 Commerce Excursion
As part of the Commerce Course, Year 9 students studied the topic Promoting and Selling.
To obtain a first-hand look at how businesses advertise and sell their products and services, an excursion to Erina Fair Shopping Centre was organised.
The focus in this unit is for students to investigate the promotion and selling of goods and services including social, ethical, and environmental considerations. They analyse the strategies that sellers use to promote products and maximise sales and evaluate the impact on consumers.
The excursion provided students with an opportunity to experience businesses in action. Erina Fair Shopping Centre consists of several types of businesses selling and promoting a range of products and services. It also encourages competition between these businesses. The students observed and recorded notes on consumer behaviour, store layout, store location and methods of advertising while exploring Erina Fair.

Year 12 HSC – Craft of Writing
Mrs Titheradge’s Year 12 HSC Standard English class are busily preparing for their HSC exams commencing on Wednesday 12 October.
With all content taught, the class have spent the past few weeks reflecting on their Trial exams and using the feedback from their teachers to practice and revise their Modules. Module C: The Craft of Writing focusses on helping students to develop their writing skills imaginatively, persuasively, and discursively.
Recently, the class took part in a mini creative writing workshop titled ‘Lucky Dip Writing’. Students selected a stimulus for their imaginative writing from a ‘Lucky Dip’ box and then were supported by a set of prompts to produce an original draft narrative to develop heading into their HSC. Each prompt required the students to write for 6 minutes at a time and include techniques like personification, metaphors, flashbacks, and dialogue. After writing, the students shared their work as a way of affirming their skills in a safe and supportive environment.
The work they produced was exceptional. The students can now continue to edit and refine their pieces in the lead up to their exams. Included below are two samples of writing from Harrison Braeme and Lucas Hautrive. Please congratulate the boys, and the entire class, in their dedication to their English Studies.
Harrison Braeme: ‘Lucky Dip’ stimulus was a pebble.
A recollection of days begun, sunrays burn through viscous layers of cloud, like an ember through paper; distant and shielding. The rain has long since passed and all that remains is the thickened stench of warm tar and petrichor rising through the air, a spreading collection of crackling neurons. Overhead powerlines purr with static, their potential a deep murmur filling the damp street. The afternoon sun offers little warmth, barely fending off the gnashing jaws of the thinning breeze.
A cloudy quartz pebble lies amongst grainy soils, chasing elusive ignorance. Throughout the sands echoes the remnants of camaraderie, clutching the pebble with an incorruptible spirit; a spirit eclipsed by panic and grandeur. A pebble, unmoved, by the million masks of God.
The hiss of the wind hurls grains of sand across its exposed surface. Slowly carving towards its core, sanding down anticipation and regard, leaving nought but a bare layer of lament. Late beads of long passed rain burrow unto the manifest.
Lucas Hautrive: ‘Lucky Dip’ stimulus was a bookmark
The vehicle had become unresponsive, clanks in the engine send cold stabs through Chris and his father’s spine. The tires of the family car screech. The cargo of an open carriage truck thuds and rattles against the cold layer of tar covering the road. Time stops. A bookmark is now to be forever rested in time for Chris’ life.
Natasha sits by the window, waiting for her dad and stepbrother to arrive. She is yet to meet them. The heavy clouds close in like a marching army storming the front line. She’s anxious, nervous, scared. What will her dad think of her? What will he say? 14 years apart is enough to riddle her with doubts. What will he think of the tattoos and what will he say about the pink hair she thinks? Small pockets of light escaping through cracks in the clouds dissolve as the time increases.

Central Coast English Teachers’ Association Success
Congratulations to our Assistant Leader of Learning for English, Kylie Nowalinski, who has been elected as President of the Central Coast English Teachers’ Association.
Kylie has assumed this role after previous President, Michelle McDonald stepped down to take on a more active role in the NSW English Teachers’ Association. Michelle is our Leader of Learning for English, who also started the branch back in 2019 with Kylie, and other colleagues from across school contexts and sectors on the Central Coast. The Branch launched the first student enrichment day on the Central Coast, Making Waves in 2019 which was a huge success and will be hosting this event again this year at the University of Newcastle, Ourimbah Campus. Both Kylie and Michelle are passionate educators and lovers of English, a passion which they share to inspire others not only in our own school, but across the region.

BBSSSA Junior Basketball
The 2022 Junior basketball squad successfully defended their BBSSSA title at Breakers Indoor Sports Stadium in Terrigal on 1 September.
The St Edward’s team defeated all competing sides from St Leo’s Catholic College, MacKillop Catholic College, St Paul’s Catholic College, Mater Maria Catholic College, St Peter’s Catholic College and St Brigid’s Catholic College in the round robin preliminary schedule. In the grand final versus Mater Maria, the St Edward’s boys came out firing on all cylinders and soundly defeated the schoolboys from the Northern Beaches by a score of 45-12.
In the tournament, the junior squad averaged over 40 points a game while only allowing 15 points per game.
The team was led by Year 8 starters Max James, Charlie Mogg, Oli Power and Riley Stauner-Lumsden, who all showed great hustle and leadership throughout the tournament. Year 8 boys Meihana Gardiner, Kye McIntosh, Patrick Oates and Tahj Regattieri provided outstanding play at all positions when needed. The youngest boys on the team, Year 7 boys AJ Tillot, Cruiz Parke and Oscar McMahon, were all valuable contributors in each game.
High praise goes out to practice team members Levi Papps, Lachlan Roach, Fletcher Bush, and Noah Gattringer for all their hard work and commitment.
With their win at the BBSSSA tournament, the St Edward’s junior basketball squad will next compete in the NSWCCC finals at Bankstown Basketball Stadium in November.

Intermediate Basketball
A very strong Intermediate team travelled to the Terrigal basketball stadium, where they performed exceptionally well against some strong opposition.
Four straight wins would see the team claim the title of BBSSSA Champions for 2022. Fine performances in the pool stage against St Peter's Catholic College and St Leo's Catholic College laid the foundations for a very successful day. Micah Nisbett and Cruz McMahon were exceptional at both ends of the floor in two comprehensive victories. The team then went on to defeat MacKillop Catholic College and Mater Maria Catholic College to secure a pace in the final. Jesse Hughan led from the front and was ably assisted by Jacob Marsters. The team made a quick start to the final and baskets were free-flowing. Our determined defence limited Mater’s opportunities and they struggled to keep up with us. Despite a late run by our opponents the boys lifted and the score got away from Mater. Next stop, the CCC tournament in Term.
Results:
St Edward's College vs St Peters Catholic College: Win 48-17
St Edward's College vs St Leos Catholic College: Win 43-18

Rugby Sevens Junior and Under 14’s
Central Coast Under 14's Rugby Sevens
The Central Coast Rugby Sevens was held at Kariong and over 15 teams participated in the event. We entered two sides and both represented St Edward’s with pride. Team 2 beat Northlakes High School before losing a close one to Kincumber High School, and then finished with a draw to Central Coast Sports College. This was a great effort from the boys as some had never played rugby before. Team 1 was unstoppable, beating Kincumber High School, Central Coast Sports College and St Phillips Christian College to claim the title as Central Coast Champions! It was a successful day and the Black and Red spirit was certainly on show for all to see.

The inaugural Broken Bay Sevens tournament was played at EDSACC, Bateau Bay, and it was a great opportunity for the students to test themselves against fellow Catholic schools within the diocese. Congratulations to the team. The results were:

Under 16’s Rugby Union
Central Coast Rugby 7’s Carnival
On Thursday, 8 September, the College entered a record three teams in the Under 16’s Central Coast 7’s tournament held at Central Coast Sports College, Kariong. Each team played in a separate pool, with each pool having 4 schools from across the Central Coast. With many of the boys being exposed to Rugby 7’s for the first time, it was a daunting task to play such a fast-paced game on a full-field. However, each boy, and team, quickly overcame any such nerves and played some quality, exciting rugby.
The boys were all fantastic ambassadors for the College, and their sportsmanship and skills were commented on by both the referees and NSW Waratah staff. Congratulations to the boys for the skills shown, positive attitude and excellent support play throughout the day.
While the day did not have an overall champion side, the three teams each competed admirably, with a total of 7 matches won from 9 played. 16 Red won 2 – lost 1, 16 Black won 2 – lost 1 and the 16 White won 3 (undefeated).
16’s Red Team: Max Leaitua, Keanu Wells, Oscar Mahoney, Kale Puata, Nate Vaughan, Harry Burgess, Devonte Vaotuua, Mitchell Ryan, Tevita Paea, Angus Newport and Archie Mesritz
16’s Black Team: Kaelan Markey, Taj Oehm, Byron Marks, Luther Thomas, Marlen Wilson, Ben Willoughby, Riley Gardner, Samuel Nowalinski, Jai McLachlan, Lachlan Tibbutt, Cooper Wheelock
16’s White Team: Thomas Putts, Elijah McMonigal, Jimmy Stuart, Cameron Woodruff, Corey Calamatta, Jake McKeon, Riley Turner, Jared Gilston, Brayden O'Leary, Lincoln Markulin, Hudson Sky
Broken Bay Diocesan Rugby 7’s Championship
Tuesday 13 September saw the Broken Bay Diocese hold the inaugural Rugby 7’s championship, contested at EDSAC, Bateau Bay. Drawing from Catholic Colleges from Manly through to Lake Munmorah, it was a great opportunity for the boys to not only play some more Rugby, but to compete for bragging rights within the Diocese. While originally there were 7 schools entered into the Year 9 and 10 competition, by the time the day began this was whittled down to 4 teams, with each team playing each other once in the “pool stage”, with the top two teams then playing off in a final.
Having played together only the week beforehand, the boys were comfortable in the simple game plan of controlling the breakdown, recycling the ball quickly and spreading the ball wide. The support play was exceptional, with positive communication being the key.
Congratulations to the boys taking out the day in such a strong and commanding fashion. Definitely look forward to watching these boys continue to play Rugby in the future.

Central Coast Rugby 7’s Under 18’s
This division saw St Edward’s enter two teams – the Year 11's and the Year 12's.
The Year 11's had a tough first up battle against Central Coast Sports College. Unfortunately, the Eddies boys went down after the Sports College capitalised on some early errors. The boys showed plenty of spirit and skill to bounce back in their next game to get the win against a strong Kincumber High School team.
The Year 12's showed plenty of flare in their first game against Kincumber High School. Some great ball movement resulted in multiple length of the field tries, ensuring a comfortable win. Their second game was a tight contest against Central Coast Sports College. The Eddies boys came from behind with two late tries to get the win!
The final game for both teams saw an all St Edward’s battle, Year 11's versus Year 12's. After an inspiring tunnel set by other Eddies boys, both teams took to the field. Drawing a big crowd everyone was eager to see what unfolded. Both teams played very entertaining rugby with plenty of ball movement and creative play. A strong run by Brendan Escott saw the Year 11's in good field position and capitalised with a try in the corner. At the sound of the final siren, officially the Year 12's got the victory. The game was played in great, light-hearted spirits with both teams entertaining the crowd. Well done to all boys involved for a fantastic day.

Chess Club
The start of this year saw restrictions in place due to COVID. By late Term 1 and an easing of restrictions Chess Club could meet regularly each Friday during Lunch.
While our chess regulars returned in 2022, we welcomed an enthusiastic group of new students to our club this year. The aim each Friday was for students to come along and enjoy social, competitive chess. Over time many members were brave enough to step away from their peer group and play chess against new members of our club and many surprised themselves with their improvement in play.
In Term 3 our club participated in the Interschool Chess Challenge Heat held at Central Coast Grammar School. The day is organised and run by the Sydney Chess Academy and all members of our club participated on the day.
Competition comprised of club members playing 7 games in a ‘Swiss’ competition. All players were seeded based on their results during the day; which meant players were competing against players from other schools of comparable ability.
While individual results for players were recorded, school placings at the end of the day would determine which schools would advance to the semi finals to be held late Term 3.
At lunch St Edward's was fifth on results to that point of the competition, however after lunch members bought their “A” game and our club finished third in the High School division. This meant we would participate in a semi-final in late August.
Unfortunately, COVID reared its head as I tested positive on the evening before the tournament so at late notice we had to withdraw from the semi-final. While I know students were disappointed, I was touched by their concern for me and my health.
Our next tournament is in Term 4; participating in a local competition here on the Coast.

Club Coordinator

The Fathering Project
As we come to the end of Term 3, we start to prepare for a two week break and thoughts of what to do with our kids.
Well, look no further as this link https://thefatheringproject.org/fathering-channel/ provides some hot tips on how to connect with you child and bring out the best in you as a father. There are some great articles, podcasts and my favourite…recipes and cooking videos that are a great fun way to work with and connect with your children.
I believe every day should be a celebration of the special privilege it is to be a father. Just this morning I was saying bye to my 4 year old son as he was watching cartoons on ABC. As usual, no response as he was too engrossed in the cartoon he was watching. No offence I thought, gave him a kiss and started to depart. A second later I hear him shout, “bye stinky head, I love you”. I’ll carry this with me for the day.
Enjoy the break and finally some warmer weather as Spring approaches.
With gratitude
Marcus Missio-Spiteri
College Counsellor
