Year 10 Retreats
The Year 10 retreat this year was held at a Camp Kariong. Camp Kariong proved to be the ideal setting for this retreat experience.
Our theme was Relationships with a focus on father/son relationships. Guest speakers and group facilitators led the boys through an inventory of discussions on the importance of responding to fathers and significant men in their lives, the importance of growing into manhood in relationship to those around us, what it is to be a father in the 21st century, and the ultimate gift of being in relationship with God the Father.
I was impressed by the responses of our boys who showed a depth of maturity in the understanding of the spiritual nature of their lives. The boys participated actively in our liturgy and sang with great enthusiasm. Many thanks to all the staff for providing these significant experiences for the boys. A special thank you to Mr Alex Toole for providing the brilliant music for the retreat, and Mr Baldwin and Mr McCauley who spoke on the day. It certainly prepares Year 10 well for the Year 11 and 12 Senior Retreat experiences that lay ahead.

Environment Portfolio Update
Envirobank Return and Earn Initiative
During Week 7 we had our first collection for the Environment Portfolio’s Return and Earn initiative. Students diverted 1,435 containers from landfill and helped to raise $73.50 toward the Environment Portfolio’s goal of raising funds for our sponsor student Frederick in Kenya.
This is a fantastic and positive start to this program and we want to thank all students for making a conscious effort to improve our habits.
A reminder to all students to be mindful when discarding their drink containers, particularly those that are purchased through our Cafeteria. The Cafeteria sells approximately 200 drinks per day – all of these drink containers can be placed in the Envirobank cages located in the quad and TAS areas or yellow bins around the grounds.
Remember 2 Waterford Hours and 2 Tatham Points will be awarded to each full orange Return and Earn bag.
Stay tuned for more information on the student led ‘Trash Free Tuesday’ initiative. Students are meeting this week to put together some resources to help parents and students pack trash free lunches for next term. There will be prizes drawn out of a raffle next term for those who get on board!!!
If any parents or carers would like to get involved or have any ideas to support St Edward’s Envirobank Return and Earn Scheme or ‘Trash Free Tuesday’, please contact the College. If you are having a function, event or party and would like a few orange Return and Earn bags please contact either Mr Gentle or Mrs Beynon.

A Day in the Life of St Edward’s College
‘We had the best day’, was how many of the 240 Year 6 students from 27 primary schools from across the coast responded after spending the day at the College last week.
Science experiments, playing Kahoot in the Learning Centre, slam dunking in PE, painting a bookmark in art, jamming with Year 10 boys in music and finally making a wooden box in woodwork were the learning experiences that the boys were involved in. Many had such a good time that they bought their parents back on Saturday to show them the excellent facilities that St Edward's College offers.

Science Term 1
Isaac Newton is often quoted as saying “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”.
What he refers to is that the ideas that he developed about physics, and his contribution to the Laws of Universal Gravitation, were built upon work done by previous philosophers and scientists, and that he did not develop them from scratch.
In high school science, the knowledge acquired and the skills in problem solving and analysing data is gained by the work done by previous scientists, mathematicians and teachers.
This year students have already had lessons, experiments and learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom that build upon what they already know, giving them a greater understanding of the natural world around them.
Year 7
Year 7 students have been introduced to the laboratories and have been studying “Working as a Scientist”. This gives a broad overview of the Scientific Method and introduces the differences between observations and inferences. They have undertaken their first assessment task and have incorporated the use of ICT into their lessons. The recent Taronga Zoo excursion was a great introduction into the next area of study “Classification”.
[smallgallery fooid="17854"]
Year 8
Year 8 have been studying “Our Chemical Earth” and have been developing skills in using data logging technology to record quantitative data and then manipulating this information in Microsoft excel. During this unit of work they have learnt about the importance of different elements and compounds, as well as the impact mining of these resources have on the environment and society.
Year 9 – Science & Marine Studies
Year 9 have been studying the History of the Atomic Model and the Periodic Table. Throughout this unit of work the boys have been learning how our models have changed over time through not only our philosophical understanding of matter, but through the development of greater technologies being able to probe deeper into matter. While our models are not complete, they are always being refined and work is made by adding to what is already known. This week the boys submit their first assessment task, an annotated bibliography on atomic models, which they will reflect upon and use later this year when they complete their Student Research Projects.
Year 9 Marine Studies students have begun the year with an introduction to the course and are working towards the completion of their unit on snorkelling. The culmination of the course is an excursion to Toowoon Bay where the boys will consolidate the skills learned within the classroom and demonstrate their snorkelling skills.
Year 10
Year 10 have just completed their first rotation of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. During each 5 week module the boys learn about Genetics in Biology, Chemical Reactions and balancing equations in Chemistry and Motion in Physics. At the conclusion of each module boys are assessed and the information helps to build a picture of capabilities in each area of Science. At the conclusion of Term 2, boys elect the subjects they wish to take to the HSC. In 2018 the College introduced prerequisite grades for certain subjects, with each Stage 6 science having a prerequisite. The marks from Semester 1 Science help guide students choose courses which match their capabilities.
Stage 6 Science
In Year 11, students have begun the Preliminary courses for Biology, Chemistry, Investigating Science and Physics. The step-up from Stage 5 Science requires students to take greater ownership of their learning. . In the coming weeks boys will be completing their first assessment tasks, a great time to evaluate their efforts and the level of achievement attained. At this level, boys should be self-directed in completing further work outside of the classroom, and this can be supplemented through the use of Edrolo. Edrolo contains short videos and worked examples for each of the dot-points found in the syllabus.
Year 12 students are fast approaching the mid-point of their final year. The second school assessment task will have been recently completed, or will be shortly. Boys should reflect on their level of achievement, and discuss with their parents and teachers what strategies are required to further develop their knowledge and skills in each subject.

Year 8 Art Excursion
Year 8 Art Visual Arts were able to experience viewing the work of the artist they are studying, during a recent excursion to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Students are studying the work of artist John Russell, Australia’s “lost” Impressionist. John Russell was an Australian artist who travelled to Europe and worked with some of the world’s most famous Impressionist artists during his stay in France.
Five Year 8 Visual Arts classes caught the bus to the city and viewed various exhibitions including the permanent collections, Art Express and William Kentridge.
The students were amazed at the size of the Gallery, the fame of some of the artists in the collection and how close we could get to admiring an artwork. The most popular question to Gallery staff was, “Which one is the most expensive painting in here?”
The answer is in the pictures!
The boys will now use their experience to document their understanding of Russell and other artists, using the information to complete their upcoming assessment and practical tasks.

Year 11 and 12 Visual Art and Photography Excursions
Senior Visual Arts and Photography students were able to practice the art of 'old fashioned' film photography on a recent excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW.
The concept of film is still a new one, with many students laying eyes on film and film cameras for the first time in their lives.
Students were able to put their understanding of Aperture, Film Speed and ISO into use and take some fabulous photos of the Sydney and city skylines. The focus for the excursion was on “Our Architectural and Social History” and students concentrated on taking shots of combinations of architecture that showed our history and beyond.
The senior Visual Arts students were also able to spend time in the Gallery visiting Art Express and had a talk with Gallery Staff about the William Kentridge exhibition. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to start to put into use their understanding of Art Practice and see visual representations of how other artists do this.

Year 7 and 8 Cross Country
A very warm Friday saw the running of the College Cross Country for Year 7 and 8. The 3 km course started on the ovals and then wound up and around the College via the driveways and laneway. The students completed two laps of the course with the added motivation of a cold drink and ice block on competition.
The afternoon was coordinated by the Year 11 SPC2 Sport Coaching class, who had spent the previous two weeks organising and planning the course, formatting the logistics for the day, preparing the warm-up of students, staff checkpoints, equipment required, general set-up of the day, newsletter and assembly reports.
Of course, the reason behind the afternoon was to run the event and select our teams for the Broken Bay (BBSSSA) carnival in Term 2. The top 3 places for each Age Group were as follows:

The House competition was won by Doolan (151 points) in a very close contest, with Shanahan (150 points), Knights (120 points) and Spillane (111 points). These points will be added to the overall house competition totals.
All students who attended and competed on the day are to be commended on their effort and the way they allowed our competitive runners the opportunity to compete. It made for an enjoyable afternoon – well done boys.
The Broken Bay Cross Country will be held at St Ives Showground on Tuesday 7 May (Week 2, Term 2). Later in the Term, students from Years 9 to 12 (14 to 18 years) will be called upon to nominate for the Broken Bay Cross Country. Students will be given permission notes for this event prior to the school holidays.

Open’s Touch Football
On Tuesday 19 February, Mrs McDonald and Mr Speziale accompanied the Opens Touch Football team to Doyalson RSL Ovals to compete in the Broken Bay selections for the NSWCCC team.
Our first game was against Mater Maria College, Warriewood, with a convincing 8-1 win. Our tries were scored by Kale Livesley, Riley Stevenson, Owen Flaherty, Boston Passeri and Wiremu Tibbutt. The team showed great tenacity in defense letting in only one try. Their ability to interchange in a swift motion was impressive. Marc Phillpott steamrolled his way up the sideline, scoring two consecutive tries.
Our second game was against St Paul’s College, Manly, with St Edward's winning 6-2. Quick play the balls and good driving ensured that we kept the opposition on their toes. The boys had slick combinations and were not frightened to throw the ball around. They drew in the opposition and created numbers in order to gain metres and score.
The third game was against MacKillop College, Warnervale, and our defense continued to be impressive. Riley Stevenson was on fire, scoring a hat trick. Sandon Smith had great ball carrying skills, throwing many cut out passes.
In the quarter finals we met a younger, yet enthusiastic team from St Brigid’s College, Lake Munmorah. The boys were very relaxed and threw the ball around splitting up our opposition. Quick dumps and fast scoops allowed the game to flow quickly with the St Edward’s team running away with a 10-1 win. Kale Livesley and Tyler Moriarty both scored two tries on their respective wings, after passes were thrown from one side of the field to the other.
We met St Leo’s College, Wahroonga, in the semifinals, with another outstanding win to beat them 8-3. There were some great scoops and wraps by all the boys. The precision with which the team did their subbing, showed great transitioning skills. They were really a well-oiled machine! The heat and dry winds were a challenge and although the team was exhausted, they continued to dig deep.
The boys impressive skills were not missed by the Broken Bay selectors and a total of 8 boys were chosen in the possible/probables game. These were: Joshua Woutersz, Riley Stephenson, Sandon Smith, Boston Passeri, Wiremu Tibbut, Zac Healy, Owen Flaherty and Fletcher Powell. At the conclusion of the game, Joshua, Sandon, Wiremu and Owen were chosen as members of the Broken Bay Squad, with Boston selected as a shadow.
At the conclusion of the day, a tired St Edward’s team played St Augustine’s College, Sydney, in the grand final, going down bravely 1-3. Sandon Smith had some impressive assists and Owen Flaherty was solid in defense. Boston Passeri, although totally spent, still managed to score a try
Although the team were not the winners on the day, their efforts were sterling nonetheless. In total, the team scored 39 tries and only allowed 12 tries to be scored against them during the whole competition!
Overall, these young men were excellent ambassadors for the College, showing great sportsmanship and excellent manners to the opposition, the referees and staff from other participating schools.
I would like to thank Mr Speziale for managing the team on the day.

Free Webinar Voucher – Balancing Extra-Curricular Activities
Free Webinar voucher for Balancing Extra-Curricular Activities
Modern life is busy. It’s busy for parents and is becoming increasingly busy for children and teens as activities fill up the family calendar outside school hours. Extra-curricular activities bring a host of benefits for children but there’s a threshold past which the benefits are outweighed by the impacts of being over-scheduled.
Join Dr Jodi Richardson in this engaging webinar to understand the trend towards increasing enrolments in structured after-school activities, the benefits and the drawbacks for kids, the importance of free play for children, the implications of over scheduling on children’s mental health and how to create balance in the lives of your children.

MASSACRE IN CHRISTCHURCH
The massacre in Christchurch is unfathomable human carnage and a tragic event. Peace is our ultimate goal, around sub-themes of diversity, respect and knowledge. The College and EREA has a clear and sustained view on our relationship with Muslim people.
Students at St Edward’s will continue to be provided with opportunities to engage with Islamic people, through the curriculum and through face-to-face connections eg Gallipoli Mosque at Auburn in Sydney, Wyong Islamic community.
The EREA Touchstones of Inclusive Community and Justice and Solidarity are central to our core Gospel message in this context.
Please contact me on 43216439 if you would like to discuss anything related to this.
The College will continue to promote the themes of belonging and community throughout the curriculum.
