Wellbeing – Building Respectful Relationships
This term all students in Years 7 and 8 have listened to our guest speaker Snr Constable Peter Hughes from Gosford Police, who discussed Cyber safety and showing respectful behaviour online.
Students in Years 9 and 10 participated in the BATYR Workshops which addressed the issue of youth suicide prevention and depression. During the Friday Wellbeing seminars students also participated in drumming activities with our school Counsellor, Marcus. Students have looked at what is respect, what it looks like and how to gain and maintain it.
Further seminars and parent seminars will be temporarily put on hold to abide with social distancing. I will keep you informed of the topics and guest speakers once the seminars resume.
In the meantime, I encourage all parents to continue the conversation about being respectful. The Australian Government has provided a website to guide parent conversations and can be accessed on the following links

Books to Read
Parents are encouraged to borrow books regarding parenting teen boys from our school library. Below are just a couple of examples to share:
That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping disorganized and distracted boys succeed in school and life by Ana Homayoun.
This author is an educational consultant and she’s seen enough boys in the school system to understand why even super smart boys struggle within the framework of a typical school. She offers a lot of strategies to help parents assist students to cope. If you know your son can handle the information in school but is having trouble staying on top of schoolwork, this book will prove invaluable.
What a Son Needs from His Mom by Cheri Fuller.
Through compelling true stories and solid principles, this book offers a blueprint for what boys need from their mum to become healthy, caring, confident young men. With specific advice for boys of different ages, mums will learn the balance between controlling and letting go, how to cultivate their son's unique masculinity, how to encourage a lasting relationship with God, and much more.

Environment, Sport, Health and Wellbeing Portfolio
With the success of Trash Free Tuesday, the Environment, Sport Health and Wellbeing Portfolio is looking to introduce a healthy lunch box day.
This healthy lunch box day would be in conjunction with Trash Free Tuesday and count as an extra tick against students’ names. As of next term, we will be introducing house points into this tally so every healthy and trash free lunch box will go towards the house cup. In order to be passed as a healthy lunch box, students must have at least 3 servings of fruit or veg. One in twenty Australian students do not fulfill the Australian healthy eating guidelines, so if students can fulfill part of these guidelines at school, they will be on their way to achieving their daily target.
It has been an exciting start to the term, with students from our Environment and Wellbeing Portfolio meeting with our College Executive to seek approval to install another chilled water filling station and commence another Trash Free initiative which will be announced next term. With the success of the first chilled water station and close to 20,000 single use plastic water bottles being diverted from landfill, Mr Bonnici was pleased to congratulate the students on their successful proposal.
Students and staff have continued to support the Environment and Wellbeing Portfolio by showing they are passionate about their environment. Trash Free Tuesday numbers have increased from 250 students in Week 1 to over 390 students in Week 7. What a fantastic way of reducing our carbon footprint.
An excellent resource for healthy lunchbox tips can be found below:

A Day in the Life of St Edward’s
‘I have had a great day and Eddies has the best things to do!’
That was how many of the 204 Year 6 students from 27 primary schools across the Central Coast responded after experiencing a ‘day in the life’ at St Edward's. Science experiments, the Learning Centre, slam dunking in PE, water colour painting, lino printing and scratch board in art, jamming with Year 10 boys in music, playing ‘Simon says’ in French and finally making a wooden box in woodwork were some of the learning experiences that the boys were involved in. Many had such a good time that the boys said they were going to bring their parents back to the Open Day this Saturday to show them the excellent facilities that St Edward's College offers.

Maths Week
This year, Maths Week was celebrated at St Edward's in conjunction with International Pi Day (March 14th).
Students were given a range of opportunities over the week to engross themselves in the wide world of mathematics, with various activities being run including Kahoot!, Blackjack, Bingo, Rubiks Cube solving, Daily Trivia, Education Perfect Competition, Pi Cityscape Art Competition and a Pi Recital. All activities were well supported by the boys, with their competitive spirits coming out, vying for an array of prizes throughout the week.
Pi Recital
Throughout Maths Week, students in Years 7-10 battled it out in class to earn a position in the Pi Recital that was held at the Friday assembly. The aim of the Pi Recital was to memorise as many digits of Pi as possible. By the end of Maths Week, two boys from each year had earnt their way into the final competition, vying for a prize pool of canteen vouchers, lollies and an EFTPOS gift card. The competition was fiercely fought, with all boys showing their strength, impressing the assembly as they memorised many digits of Pi. The competition came down to two final boys, Ikey Allen (Year 10) and Maxi Corrigan (Year 7), who battled it out one digit at a time, until an eventual winner was declared. After reciting 108 decimal places of Pi, Ikey Allen proved victorious, taking out the crown. It was an amazing effort by both boys; the crowd were hanging on every digit! Congratulations to all the boys who competed; it was an extraordinary effort by all.
Inquisitive Minds
On Thursday during Maths Week, all of Year 8 attended an Inquisitive Minds session throughout the day – this was a hands on, competitive maths workshop, in which the boys solved various practical problems and competed for a large variety of prizes. The boys thoroughly enjoyed these workshops, with their competitive spirits well-and-truly coming out, pushing them to work together with their partner, allowing them to develop their problem solving and collaboration skills over the time. The workshops were assisted throughout the day by Year 10 students, who did a fantastic job in ensuring everything ran smoothly. A special thank you to Mr Marks, who coordinated the running of the day – it was very well organised, resulting in its success!
Art Competition
During Maths Week, Year 7 and 8 Art classes joined in the Maths Week fun, creating cityscape artworks based on the digits of Pi. Over the week some great artworks were produced and three of the best were chosen to receive prizes, presented at the Friday assembly – Congratulations to Jayden Miotello, Cameron Day and Angus Jack. Thank you to the Art staff and all the boys that got involved and joined in the Maths Week activities!
Pi Pie
To join in the cross-curricular Maths Week fun, Mrs McDonald (Food Technology) kindly baked a Pi Pie to be shared by the Mathematics staff at lunch to celebrate the week. The pie was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone! Thank you to Mrs McDonald!
Assembly
Maths Week 2020 culminated with a whole school assembly, led by the prefects from the Academia Portfolio. The assembly was a great way to wrap-up Maths Week, with the Pi Recital, awarding of prizes for various competitions and fun facts and tricks presented. The real highlight of the assembly was a performance by RHYTHMetric, singing his hit ‘The circle song – Circler’. Many of the boys at St Edward's were very familiar with this song, having heard it in class and using it over the years for their own learning. The assembly was very excited to see RHYTHMetric and he did an amazing job! Thank you to Mr Ritchie’s evil twin for coming and topping off what had already been a great week!
Thank you to the Academic Portfolio, in particular the Year 12 boys, for their organisation in the lead-up to and during Maths Week. Thank you to all of the Mathematics faculty for their efforts throughout the week, running activities at lunch, organising workshops, running Pi recital trials and in general, promoting the whole week. Thank you also goes to Mrs Evans and the Art Faculty for running the Pi Cityscapes Art Competition and Mrs McDonald for baking the delicious Pi Pie. Without everyone’s contribution, the week would not have been as much fun as what it was!
Maths Week will be back in 2021!

Under 14 and 15 Annual League Game vs Blacktown Patrician Brothers
On 13 March our two teams made the journey out West to Blacktown for our annual rugby league game.
This game has been played for 17 years and is a testament to the camaraderie between the two Colleges.
When we arrived, the boys were impressed to observe a beautifully manicured oval to play on. The team also noted what a multi-cultural school Blacktown is compared with our own.
There was a great atmosphere throughout the game especially when the crowd roared. Taking on last year’s State Champions is a tough task but our boys were up for the challenge.
Both games began impressively for St Edward’s with great charges from the forwards and slick work from the backs. This gave our boys plenty of confidence, but Blacktown were not going to go away without a fight. As the games progressed Blacktown showed their great depth and began to dominate both on the field and the score board. The tough tackling from all players and organised attack was a feature of these highly entertaining contests. At full time, Blacktown were victorious in both games. All those who played need to be congratulate for the spirit in which the games were played.
After the game, 2 players from each team were selected as the best players.

Under 15’s: St Edward’s 12 Blacktown 28

Parenting Ideas – Children During the Coronavirus Pandemic
Leading the Way for Children During the Coronavirus Pandemic
Leading the way for children during the Coronavirus pandemic
If you’re like me, the news of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has your head spinning and your heart pumping. That’s only natural as life as we know has taken a seismic shift in recent days.
International travel bans, cancellation of sporting and cultural events, shopping frenzies and talk of school closures continue to dominate the airwaves. Terms such as social distancing, self-isolation and social lockdowns have entered our vocabularies and may soon become part of our daily lives.
Coronavirus is having an unprecedented impact on our daily lives, and will probably do so for some time. While keeping ourselves and children healthy and safe is our main concern, it’s also essential to address the anxieties of children and young people during these changing times. Here are some ideas to help inform, reassure and keep children and young people safe.
Build on What Your Children Know
Children and young people have already been exposed to a great deal of information about corona virus through media, digital means and direct social contact. Their understanding will vary depending on their age and also the quality of their information sources so you probably will need to help kids process what they already know.
Casual conversations with teenagers and older children can be useful ways to glean their understanding. You could ask questions like “What are you hearing about Coronavirus? Is there anything you’re not sure about?” Younger primary age children may need a more direct approach with parents addressing their specific concerns without giving too much information that can overwhelm them.
Check Your Own Thoughts and Feelings
Check your own frame of mind and emotions about COVID-19 before talking to kids. Most children are astute mood detectives and they’ll gauge their safety by the way you communicate with them. If you tell a child, “You’ve got to wash your hands or you’ll get infected,” you are communicating your own anxieties, making it difficult for them to maintain a healthy state of mind. Have a think about how you can frame your instructions and their importance in a way that doesn't heighten your child's anxieties.
Stay Informed
It’s difficult to work out fact from fiction, correct from incorrect, information from exaggeration when the news is changing so fast. However you need to educate yourself about the virus itself, including how it’s transmitted and how to stay safe. Get information from trustworthy sources such as The Australian Government Health Department website and the current federal government corona virus information media campaign.
Answer Questions Truthfully
It’s important that parents and teachers answer children’s questions honestly in age-appropriate ways and within context of what is happening at the given time. If their sport or hobby has been temporarily cancelled empathise with their concerns, while helping them maintain a sense of perspective.
Initiate Positive Action
One way to reduce anxiety and allay children’s fears is to involve them in planning and preparation for their personal and group safety. Positive activities such as maintenance of personal hygiene, greeting people with an elbow tap and getting plenty of sleep can help restore a sense of control, that is so important for their wellbeing.
Find Refuge in Rituals
Regular rituals such as mealtimes, bedtime stories and regular one-on-one time provide both an anchor to normality and a sense of connection for kids at times of change. Consider reconstituting favoured family rituals at this time if they have lapsed due to lack of time, or lifestyle frenzy.
Look Outwards
In difficult times there is a tendency to look inwards, which is a natural protective strategy. The alternative is to establish a sense of connection and community spirit by focusing on generosity and togetherness. Help children see past their own needs and look for ways to assist others whether it’s shopping for an elderly neighbour, helping a younger sibling occupy themselves, or planning an indoor movie night for the whole family.
The Coronavirus presents many practical challenges to parents and other important adults in the lives of kids. Staying calm, keeping informed, and adjusting our own habits are just some of the challenges we face. However a significant challenge is one of personal leadership. That is, during these difficult times we need to be civil to each other, look out for each other and be mindful of the common good in everything we do. In this, we can all take a significant lead.
