Year 7 Mother’s Day Liturgy
On Thursday 4 May, Year 7 gathered with many of their family members to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Each core class presented an item that captured the importance of motherhood. It was a wonderful occasion that was followed by a beautiful morning tea.
Many thanks to all who assisted in preparing for this gathering and for the boys who performed so admirably on the day.

Year 12 Retreat
Year 12 were given the opportunity to participate in important spiritual experiences on their three day Retreat amid the peaceful and serene environment at the Mulgoa Retreat Centre. They didn’t waste the opportunity.
The boys were lead through reflection, prayer, bushwalks and discussions about ‘Images of God’, what it means to be a man in the 21st Century, goal setting, relationships, and the importance of communication. The celebration Liturgy organised by the students was very special as it is their last Retreat. Parents and staff should be very proud of the input and maturity shown by Year 12.
Guest speakers for the retreat were Mrs Sarah Evans and Ms Jessica Beagin. They both shared their stories and left the boys with lots to think about. Their talks were informative and challenging and were well received. The staff at Mulgoa could not speak highly enough of the boy’s positive attitude, friendliness, cooperation, courtesy, and willingness to enter completely into the spirit of the retreat.
Parent reflection and thank you:
As a parent , I have seen first-hand what a positive and rewarding experience it was for both my boys who were there at different times during the week. They had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the opportunity to bond with their peers further and reflect on life as it is for young men about to go out into the world. What a great, supportive environment this provides for all the students of Year 12 each year.
I know something like this doesn't happen without considerable organisation, time and effort.
So, thank you.
Year 12 are a credit to their families and the College. A special thank you to all the Religious Education teachers in attendance and in particular Mr Beacroft our Leader of Mission and Identity, Mrs Palmer-Brown our Leader of Learning Religious Education, Mr Dell and Mr McCauley the Year 12 Pastoral Leader, for their leadership and guidance over the week.

St Edward’s Sleepout
The first St Edward’s College Sleepout for the year took place on Thursday and Friday Week 2 this term.
This inspiring event that took place on our College grounds in the Quad, where both students and staff spent the night to build empathy for others in our community. This initiative brought together our passionate students who braved the elements and slept in sleeping bags on the veranda, all in the spirit of raising awareness and building empathy for those experiencing homelessness.
The evening commenced with an informative presentation on homelessness in Australia. Students were provided with invaluable insights into the multifaceted issues faced by individuals and families without a permanent place to call home. This educational session shed light on the challenges they encounter daily, allowing our participants to better understand the importance of supporting those in need.
The main objective of Sleepout 2023 was to provide our students with an opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and gain a glimpse into the realities of homelessness. While we acknowledge that one night in the cold cannot fully replicate the experiences of those without shelter, it served as a powerful catalyst for empathy. By spending this night outside, our students aimed to deepen their understanding and foster a greater sense of compassion towards the less fortunate members of our community.
We are proud to announce that the College has recognised the significance of this event by allocating Waterford hours for participation. This means that students who took part in the sleepout will receive recognition for their contribution to the community.
To facilitate this event, a nominal donation of $10 was requested from each participant. All funds raised during the Sleepout 2023 have been donated directly to Coast Shelter, a prominent organisation providing vital support services for people experiencing homelessness and domestic and family violence. These donations will be used to assist in our monthly commitment to provide meals for those in need.
Coast Shelter is renowned for its local focus and commitment to delivering innovative solutions to tackle homelessness, domestic and family violence, and poverty. The money raised by our students will make a tangible impact on their work, enabling them to implement both immediate and lasting changes in our community.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all the students, parents, and staff members who generously supported Sleepout 2023. Your contributions, whether through participation, donating efforts, or simply raising awareness, have played a pivotal role in making this event a resounding success.
St Edward’s College remains dedicated to fostering empathy, compassion, and community engagement among our students. Sleepout 2023 has been a significant step towards achieving these goals, and we are proud of the empathy and understanding our students have developed through this experience. There will be another opportunity for students in Year’s 9-11 to participate in another Sleepout held later in the year.
Thank you once again for your unwavering support and commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Together, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society.

Leader of Justice, Peace, and Advocacy

Student Leadership Team 2023
Congratulations to our Student Leadership Team 2023
It gives me great pleasure to introduce our Student Leadership Team for 2023. The team is comprised of students from Years 8-11 who will serve as leaders in different capacities around the College, while being the student voice on issues that matter to them. They will also participate in various College Portfolios over the course of the year and attend leadership workshops to provide them with skills and guidance to assist them on their journey as young leaders.
These students underwent an application process in Term 1 and were selected for their excellent record of participation and service to the College community. Each of them articulated their vision for the College as we work together to make St Edward’s even better for students, staff and families. I look forward to working with them throughout the year.

Maths in Trades Visit
Maths in Trades Visit to the Science Laboratory Construction Site
On Thursday 4 May, the Year 10 Maths in Trades students had the opportunity to visit the science laboratories for the second time this year where construction work is taking place. They were able to witness the progress of the work firsthand and gain insights into the important skills required to become an apprentice tradesman. Victor, the site manager, shared with the students what has been happening on site and the different stages of the construction process.
The boys were able to see the importance of mathematical concepts in real-life situations. They observed how measurements and calculations were necessary in the refurbishment of the building. This helped them to understand the relevance of what they were learning in their math classes and how it can be applied in the workforce. Additionally, they were able to see how problem-solving and critical thinking skills were important when dealing with unexpected challenges in the construction process.
Victor also spoke to the boys about the key skills required to become an apprentice tradesman. He highlighted the importance of punctuality, teamwork, communication, and a strong work ethic. The boys were able to gain a deeper understanding of the qualities needed to be successful as an apprentice and how they could apply these skills in their future careers.
The visit to the science laboratory was a valuable experience for the Year 10 Maths in Trades students. It provided them with a practical application of what they are learning and helped them to understand the importance of skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork in the workforce.

Plain English Speaking Award
This term, Juan Jose Rodriguez Caldas represented St Edward’s in the Plain English Speaking Award.
This state-wide competition sees participants deliver an eight-minute speech on a topic of their choice. Juan Jose presented an interesting and engaging speech on Dreams: why, how, and the origins of dreams and dreaming. After their prepared speech, speakers were given a topic that they then had three minutes to prepare a three-minute speech. The topic was ‘making a decision’ and Juan Jose put forward a personal take on finding the balance between two cultures. Congratulations to Juan Jose for his remarkable effort and commitment to public speaking.

Construction Trade Qualification Incursion
Construction Trade Qualifications Incursion – funded by Regional Industry Employer Partnerships (RIEP)
On Friday 5 May, Mr Austin’s Year 10 Woodwork class built a hexagonal seat around a tree near the Yarning Circle with Joey and Mick from Construction Trade Qualifications. They taught us many things about trades and apprentices, mainly focusing on the carpentry trade and the pathways that can come from it.
After speaking with us we started to get hands on by building the seat around the Shire Oak tree at the Yarning Circle, this process took us the whole day but was a good learning experience for all of us as it gave us a taste into the future.
The process of making the deck started by digging holes around the tree and planting posts into the ground. We had to make sure they were level and plumb before we filled them with concrete and started on connecting the outside supports. Once that was completed, we started work on the inside support then on the decking itself. After completion we had another chat with Joey and Mick about apprenticeships where they answered any other questions we had.
Overall, it was a great experience and I feel we should get people from other professions to come in and teach us their skills.

Opens Football
On Thursday 4 May, 16 students from Years 10-12 travelled on the College bus down to Cromer Park to compete in the Broken Bay Opens Football Tournament.
The competition was high stakes as the Eddies team had to win the entire day to progress to a diocese elimination round. The following details the match results and an overview of the day.
The first pool match saw St Edward's up against St Pauls Catholic College (4-0). Our team started quickly and were gelling nicely, despite not having any training sessions together. Playing in 4-2-3-1 formation, we soon found the back of the net with Jude Ranking finishing after a nice reverse ball from Jesse Mantell. Jude would go on to earn a brace, while Luke Colgan scored a header at the back post and Joel Parrelli finished off the rout with a clinical finish.
The second pool match brought us against St Brigid’s Catholic College (6-0) and we maintained our dominate display of total football. Taj Werner earned and bagged a penalty before going on to secure a hat trick. Jude continued his run of form with another brace, while substitute Ellis Milson popped up at the far post to finish neatly from a teasing cross. With a squad of 16, it was a great opportunity to rotate the team to ensure everyone had game time and understood their roles.
Our last pool match was against St Leo’s Catholic College (1-0). Despite being able to rotate the teams in the first two matches, our first half display was flat and the boys struggled to break down a far more organised defence. The first half ended 0-0. A change in personnel saw Isaac Broomfield start the second half and from the kick off, he was able to slip a perfectly weighted pass in to Jude who finished. We were able to hold our 1-0 comfortably and finish top of our pool.
The Broken Bay representative team were selected based on a possibles/probables match. Selectors picked two teams from all the schools present on the day. Typically, we have had several boys picked. Congratulations to those who played in the trial and a further congratulations to Aidan Ellis, Jesse Mantell, Finn Palmqvist, Jesi Wanjohi, Daniel McCarthy and Aidan Walsh-Catanzaro (shadow squad) for their selection in the Broken Bay team.
After a short break, the team had to re-group for the semi final against St Augustine’s Catholic College (3-0). This was played on the synthetic pitch, which suited our teams technical ability and style of play. The opposition were one of the strongest outfits on the day with some dangerous players that looked to hit a team on the counterattack. Luke Colgan was not having any of that. Not only was he composed in defence but he popped up just outside the area after a corner to pivot and smash the ball in for an early lead. After this goal, our team turned it up a level with Isaac Broomfield curling a left foot shot into the top corner after some great passing and Taj back among the goals executing a team move that left the coaches speechless. We had maintained a clean sheet so far, however a critical save was made by Tom Lawton to protect that stat.
The final saw a re-match of the tough pool against St Leo’s Catholic College (2-0). It was back on grass and the field was not ideal for beautiful football. Despite the lethargy and creeping cramps, Jude once again showed his authority with a clinical finish before Isaac had the time and composure to slot a second goal to ensure St Edward's won the day.
The squad now progress to the elimination competition, which will see us play against the winning team from the Newcastle Diocese competition. A huge thank you to Mr Ellis who provided immense tactical and coaching support for the team. It was a fantastic day for football.

A special mention to Dylan, this was his first time representing the College in a sporting team. He and Taylin both trained together in preparation for this event, and he now qualifies for the NSWCCC Championships. Overall, the boys won the Age Group Point score.
A great day resulted in our team re-claiming the Broken Bay Overall Boys Champions title. Well done to all the boys who competed on the day, especially those that placed in the Top 6 of their Age Group. They now progress with the Broken Bay Team, to run at the Sydney Equestrian Centre on Tuesday 13 June.
A big thank you to Sarah Moulton and Lachlan Butt for assisting with the team and helping on the day.

Under 15’s Rugby League Central Coast City Cup
On Wednesday Week 3 the Under 15s Rugby League team participated in the local Central Coast gala day or City Cup. It was a fantastic day for rugby league and it was great to see so many schools submitting sides for the day.
The first game was against St Phillip's Catholic College, and the team came away with a resounding 58-0 win. The St Phillip's team showed great courage and team spirit in every play, even though they were severely undersized with younger players taking the field for them. The St Edward’s students also showed great sportsmanship by kicking off after every try and not looking to be unnecessarily physical with the smaller opposition. Hard to choose a standout during this game as all players played well and shared the ball equally.
The next game against Lisarow High School also ended in another victory for the team, again a game in which it was all one-way traffic for the duration. Lisarow showed great determination being a man down for the whole game. The St Edward’s team also demonstrated their sportsmanship again by playing a man down when Lisarow were reduced to 11 players following an injury. Some great running from the forwards laid the platform for some quality tries scored out wide leading to a 24-0 win.
The last game of the pool rounds against Terrigal High School would prove to be our most ill-disciplined, with a lot on stake as the winner would advance to the semi-finals. Early errors and dropped ball gave Terrigal quality field position for much of the first half resulting in the only try conceded against us all day off a perfectly placed kick to the Terrigal winger on last tackle. The team showed great resilience clawing back to a tough 6-6 scoreline at half-time. The second half would demonstrate how good this team can be when they eliminate the unforced errors. Again, rolling down the field after the 1-2-3-4 punch of the middles, every set making 50-60m. We advanced through to the semi-finals after a 26-4 win over Terrigal.
Up against a tough Wadalba High School side in the semi-final, the game went back-and-forth, with neither team gaining the upper hand. Both sides had errors creeping into their games as fatigue started to set in after a long day. But the team continually turned up for one-another, defending their line with grit and determination. We had opportunities to score in the first half, but the polish just wasn’t there, and the scores were locked up at 0-0 at half time. The second half would be much the same, with hard running and brutal defence. All players stepped up and with incredible direction from the halves and once again the forwards laying the platform, we crossed the line late in the second half to go up 4-0. The remaining 5 minutes would see St Edward’s defend their try line repeatedly, but again they turned away everything Wadalba threw at them, emerging victors.
It was a great day of Coast rugby league, where every player to pull on the jersey stood up in various moments and showed their skills and toughness. Stand out of the day was Ben Hoban, who took run after run making over 10 metres each time and was punishing in defence.
The grand final will be held in Week 8 against what will be a quality Central Coast Sports School team. The team would also like to thank manager/waterboy/distributor of lollies Mr Herringe for his support on the day.

Bill Turner Cup – Round 2
The Under 15’s Bill Turner Cup Football team played their second game against a strong Central Coast Adventist School.
Although creating many chances in the first 15 mins, the boys went to the half time break 1-0 down. Undeterred, they continued to play out the back and through midfield but were guilty of too many touches leading to turn over in possession. A well worked move saw Reid Spokes send a first-time ball through for Harry Thorpe to open the scoring Eddies account and bring the game level. Soon after the same pair combined again with Harry getting a first half brace.
The second half was very much the same. Cheap turn overs in possession allowed Central Coast Adventist School to stay in the game and nearly catch us on the break a couple of times. However, the boys held on to win the game 2-1. We move on to the next round to play the winner of Gosford High School or Kincumber High School.

Careers/Vocational Education
Careers – UAC News
UAC News
Applications are open
Applications for university in 2024 are strong, with nearly 14,000 Year 12 students applying since we opened on 5 April. To start their application, students will need their NESA student number or their BSSS student number (ACT students) issued through their school and their UAC PIN (emailed by UAC on 5 April).
Remind your students to check that they have registered a personal email address with NESA. They can do this by logging in to Students Online. UAC sends UAC PINs to the email addresses students have registered with NESA. We will email a PIN reminder in early August.
Not all courses available
Institutions haven’t provided all 2024 course information to UAC, but students can still complete their application for uni. They can select any course commencing in 2024 and come back later to review and update their preferences. All courses will be available in August.
Course Compass
If your Year 12 students need help deciding which uni course to apply for, direct them to Course Compass. After they answer a few quick questions about their HSC subjects, Course Compass will display fields of study offered to recent applicants just like them. They can then drill down to institutions offering courses that might suit them.
Early offers to Year 12 students
While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most unis, there are other ways for students to show that they’re ready to succeed at tertiary study. This means they may be able to receive an offer to university before ATARs are released.
Offers made through UAC
Because we have several offer rounds in the first half of the year, many Year 12 students ask us if they can receive an offer now. The short answer is 'no': the first UAC offers to Year 12 students will be made to Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) applicants on 10 November 2023. Offers made then are not based on HSC results and ATARs. Instead, they are based on other criteria like Year 11 results and the school's rating of the student.
Before November offers are made to applicants who are not in Year 12 this year and already have a qualification we can assess. They're often applying to start a course in semester 2.
Most UAC offers to Year 12 students are made in late December, after the release of ATARs.
Offers directly from the institutions
In addition to submitting an SRS application, Year 12 students can apply for an early offer directly to individual institutions. Each institution has different application and offer dates. All the details are on our website.
Access and scholarship programs
Applications for the Schools Recommendation Scheme, Educational Access Scheme and Equity Scholarships are all open and application guides are available to download.
If you have students who may be eligible for these schemes, encourage them to start their applications as soon as they've submitted their UAC undergraduate application.

Parenting Tips – Communication is Key
Communication is Key!
How we communicate with boys changes as they grow up. But whether they are young children or in their teens, keeping the lines of communication open is important. That way, we can support them emotionally and mentally, and be there for them when they need us.
Try talking side by side. Whether you're kicking the footy or taking a walk together, boys tend to feel more comfortable opening up when there's less direct eye contact.
It's crucial to show your son love and support. When you let your son know that he is valued and important, it can help him develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence that will serve him well throughout his life.
Top Tips
Build a comfort zone: Create a safe space for chats, this could be around the dinner table or watching sport together.
Affirm your son when he opens up: Give him a hug – show that you care. Ask for his opinion – show him his opinions are valid.
Say “I love you”: Think of different ways to tell him you love him when he least suspects it. Write how you feel in cards, notes, emails and text messages.
