Learning Conferences
Students will be provided with an opportunity to complete a Learning Reflection in each of their courses. This reflection will provide the basis for the discussion at the Online Learning Conferences which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday of Week 1, Term 4 (6 and 7 October 2021).
The purpose of these conferences is to allow the boys to articulate how they believe they are progressing in each course and where they may need some further assistance to bring about improvement. This approach is designed to encourage boys to take greater responsibility for their learning and to establish goals for ongoing improvement.
It is the expectation that all students participate in this online meeting with their parents and that bookings are made at times when students and parents can both attend.
Parents will be able to book appointments for either of the days that suit. Please note that conferences will be available for bookings between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm and all conferences will be of seven (7) minutes duration.
Please note that teachers will not be conducting online lessons on these days, however students will be expected to complete the set work that will be made available on the student portal and/or CANVAS.
The Learning Conference bookings will be managed through an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). It will save time for parents, staff, and students. Using this system, you will be able to book the conference times that suit you best.
The teachers will then contact students at the scheduled time via a Microsoft Teams meeting. This will mean that parents and students will need to be available at booked times with Microsoft Teams open on a device. This process and the process for student reflection will be further explained to students in their classes.
Access to the system will be available from Monday 13 September at 9:00 am and will be closed off for bookings the day before interviews.
Please see below for the Parent Teacher On-Line link and further instructions
If you encounter any problems using PTO, please contact the school office on 4321 6400.
Please follow these steps to access the system:
Click here to go to the PTO website
Click on 'Obtain PIN/Password' (you will need to supply your email address)
Enter your email address and click on "Send Email"
Check your email in-box for your login details or click on the link in the email
Go back to the PTO website, login with the details supplied via email
Follow the online instructions to complete the bookings.
Please note that in Step 1 of the booking process you will need to select the start date and time by scrolling through the drop-down menu until you reach your desired start time.

What’s Been Happening in Food Technology
Greetings from the Food Technology Department. This year has flown with many exciting adventures for the boys, prior to lockdown.
Year 12 Hospitality students completed their Prepare and Serve Coffee Course at Blend Co, Lisarow. Year 11 Hospitality had a successful workplace at various venues across the Coast. There was also success for our Hospitality students at the Battle of the Chef’s competition in Term 2 at St Peter’s Catholic College. Although the boys were not finalists, they were great ambassadors for the College, giving up many afternoons to perfect their cooking skills. They prepared a delicious main course of Poached Chicken in Tarragon Sauce with Duchess Potatoes and Dutch Carrots, for dessert they prepared Profiteroles with Chantilly Cream and Strawberry Coulis. Their ability to work as a team and complete tasks within a set time frame was impressive.
Once again, we have been fortunate enough to be able to visit East Coast Beverages with Year 12 Food Technology. This was part of our study into The Australian Food Industry and Food Manufacturing. We toured their facilities and had informative speeches about their development of new products and the processes they go through, as well as quality assurance and control protocols. We are grateful for their continued support of the Food Technology Faculty.
[foogallery id="33822"]
Year 11 Food Technology also enjoyed a visit from Cake ‘N Plate as part of the Food Quality unit. The boys decorated cupcakes with buttercream and fondant with a 'fast food' theme. It was exciting to see the boys engaged and enjoying their creativity with these mediums.
[foogallery id="33829"]
Term three has had its challenges with teaching a practical subject online. The boys have all shown their commitment to this and have embraced our cooking at home challenges. I am sure that families have enjoyed watching their sons cook throughout the term and are hoping that they will continue this practice throughout the coming weeks. I would like to commend all students on their efforts and application during Home Based Learning and the staff look forward to seeing the boys in person and watching their skills in the kitchen develop.
Although these are trying times, the Year 11 and Year 12 students have completed their exams online during this term. Their efforts and resilience are to be applauded!
Finally, I would like to wish both the Year 12 Food Technology and the Year 12 Hospitality students all the best in their upcoming HSC examinations… “I know you’ll make it through and reach your dreams. Just believe in yourselves”

Book Week
For the second year in a row Book Week was a virtual experience due to the COVID19 pandemic.
But this wasn’t going to stop the library staff from celebrating our favourite week of the year! We certainly missed seeing you all dress up and get your picture taken in the photo booth, watching you try to conquer the escape room in record time, and keeping quiet while you huddle around the notice board and ask us what the answers are for the quiz of the day. Instead, we had to settle for some online quizzes that Year 7 took part in with great enthusiasm – except for the dressing up as your favourite character, only Miss Moulton and Miss Moon took it to that level.
We had some great entries for the competitions: guess the book, match the book to the book world, match the book to the food, and take a pic of your pet with a book. It was great to see Year 7 really engage with the activities and talk about books with enjoyment. Hopefully next year we get to celebrate it together in our wonderful library that we all miss so much.
Thank you also to the English Faculty and Academic Portfolio who assisted with some Book Week competitions.

Creative English
In English, students were asked to respond to poems they are studying, through creative reinterpretations.
Students were tasked with capturing the tone and key ideas of the poems in their responses.
Wild Swans at Coole by Yeats - Short Film by Xavier John Nisbett
Xavier John Nisbett in Year 11 Advanced English, responded to Yeats ‘Wild Swans at Coole’ through a short film which captured the poet’s fear that poetic inspiration would leave him as he aged.

Noah Nakagawa's Performing Webber's Theresienstadt Lullaby
Noah Nakagawa in Year 10 responded with a musical rendition of Ilse Weber’s Holocaust poem ‘Theresienstadt Lullaby’ where he sought to capture the melancholy tone of the lyrics through a stripped back acoustic accompaniment.

Congratulations to Lulu Paea in Year 12 on his selection in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby President’s Team for 2021.
Lulu’s selection is testament to his hard work and dedication to his Rugby over the course of the last few years. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the opportunity to represent NSW All Schools Firsts at the School Sport Australia Championships due to the current restrictions, his selection however, recognises his obvious talent and performance at the NSW All Schools selections in Term 2.

Careers – University Information
We are pleased to announce that we will be providing all school leaver students with 5 adjustment points for all programs (excluding the Joint Medical Program).
These additional adjustment points are in recognition of the extraordinary challenges year 12 students have faced since the start of last year. We would love to see these extra points providing encouragement for students to continue to strive for their best results in the HSC.
The 5 adjustment points will automatically be applied by UAC and there is no need for any additional application. Students are eligible for a maximum of 12 adjustment points.
We also wanted to let you know that despite the delay in ATARs, we will still be providing students with a pathway to receive an offer prior to Christmas. Our Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) offers will be released from November Round 1. This is an important pathway for our school leaver cohort. Nearly 50% of our commencing school leaver applicants came in through the SRS last year, so we would encourage as many of your students to apply before the September 19 deadline (see here for more details).
2022 Accommodation Applications Opening 7 October
Semester 1, 2022 accommodation applications will open on Thursday 7 October. Students will be required to pay a $100 application fee.
To ensure an easy application process, we encourage students to register a profile on the Student Living Accommodation Portal.
Students can view our different accommodation options on our website.
Accommodation applications are extremely competitive, with hundreds of students applying to live on campus every year.
We encourage all students to be ready to apply as soon as applications open to ensure the best possible chance of living on campus next year!

Parenting Ideas – Resilience for Kids
Everyday Resilience Lessons for Kids
Muscles needs to be exercised daily if they’re to remain strong, flexible and do their jobs. Resilience is no different. If it’s not exercised regularly our resilience will waste away.
Resilience is developed through regular daily use. Here are some simple ways you can encourage a child or young person of any age to flex their resilience muscles every day.
Wait Until Mealtime
Discourage them from random snacking when they are hungry. Encourage them to wait until mealtime. By tolerating minor discomforts such as hunger, thirst or even some worries, kids get the practice needed to help them manage bigger future hurdles that may come their way. You can build your child's tolerance of discomfort by encouraging them to delaying immediate gratification even just for a few moments.
Do More Than Expected
Great sportspeople routinely train more than others and push through mental and physical boundaries. Encourage your child to push through boundaries and do more than expected in small ways. Perhaps they don’t just clean their bedroom but tidy the living room as well. They may aim to shoot 10 goals in a row at basketball practice but keep going until they reach fifteen. Going past the finish line is wonderful resilience practice. What else can you do that would encourage your child to do more than expected on a regular basis?
Save Pocket Money
Did you know that when you encourage your child to save some of their pocket money rather than spend it immediately you are teaching them to delay gratification, an acknowledged resilience attribute? Asking a child to set aside some pocket money for saving, some for charity and some for spending will help develop a balanced use of pocket money. It helps if a child can develop their own savings goal, and parental suggestions can assist. The delay of an immediate reward to achieve a greater or later reward needs to be practiced if it’s to become part a child’s pattern of behaviour.
Make the Bed
Resilience comes from doing things that we don’t feel like doing and making a bed is one thing few people enjoy. The daily habit of making a bed (to the best of a child’s or teen’s ability) is a brilliant discipline to develop, which has the bonus of setting kids up well for a productive day at school. What other simple habits that fit into the "don't-like-to-do" basket that benefits either your child or others in the family?
Help When You Don't Feel Like it
It's easy to help at home when they've had a good day at school or the weather is fine. It's much more difficult to step up and help set the table, put out the rubbish or hear a sibling read when they've had a bad day at school or the weather is stinking hot. The seemingly small act of sticking to commitments even though they help develop discipline and conscientiousness that contributes to a sense of resilience
Smile When You Don’t Feel Happy
Feelings may be difficult to manage, but behaviour is a choice. Encourage kids to choose happy, or at least act happy by smiling rather than putting on a grumpy face. The brilliant thing about this strategy is that smiling changes their mood so that they begin to experience pleasant emotions.
It’s the small, everyday behaviours we encourage in kids that have the greatest impact on their behaviour, wellbeing and resilience.
