End of Year Liturgies
Year Group Liturgies
In Week 9 each year group gathered for their end of year liturgy in the ERC. During the liturgies students delivered meaningful responses to the Gospel readings. Another important feature of the liturgies was the presentations by Pastoral Leaders which included images of all the great things our students participated in throughout the year. Thanks to all those students and teachers who helped at this important liturgical event.
Christmas Liturgy
It was great to be able to conduct our annual Christmas Liturgy with the College community this year for the first time in two years. This liturgy was a joyous celebration that included communal singing of Christmas carols, the farewell of some staff and the presentation of Christmas hampers by each homeroom for disadvantaged families. Thanks to all those who contributed to this wonderful occasion.

Caring for Country
On Friday 9 December forty Year 10 students from St Edward's College, supported by Clean4shore, went to Maitland Bay and Little Beach in the Bouddi National Park to clean up rubbish along the foreshore.
The day was part of a four week alternate end of year program set up by the College to prepare Year 10 students for the future. The experience was eye opening for a lot of students as there was a lot of plastic waste and debris that had washed up on the shore. Students were surprised to see how much polystyrene there was and horrified to find out that it didn’t break down over time. Students were given an insight into the damage micro plastics could have on the marine environment and the overwhelming quantity of microplastic that was found on the shore. In total the boys pulled out 8 large bags of rubbish which was made up of pieces of polystyrene, chunks of foam mattresses, small microplastics, straws, plastic bottles, pieces of balloon, and flood debris such as pontoons, chairs and other floating objects.
Students felt a sense of pride in what they had achieved by the end of the day but also made stronger connections to their natural environment. The boys were very interested in learning about how our first nations peoples cared for country and how they used different plants for different purposes. They also learned how poor habits from our current society can affect the cycle of life that had been looked after for so long. Hopefully this connection will help them to tread lighter on our shared earth into the future.
A big thanks to Jono from Clean4shore for supporting the excursion and Juliana Dignam for organising the day.

Uniform and College Bag Donations
Uniform and College Bag Donations Required
Uniform malfunctions often occur with splits, rips and food/drink spillage very common. Some families are also struggling financially and require help with supply of some parts of the uniform, the College is therefore seeking donations of second-hand, clean uniforms including sports uniforms, summer/winter uniforms, ties, jumpers, blazers and College bags. All sizes are required but we are very short on larger sizes. If you can help, please donate all washed items to Pastoral Care in the Wellbeing Centre. We appreciate your assistance in helping us keep our boys well presented.

Annual Award’s Assembly
On Tuesday 13 December, the College community celebrated our students' academic success at the Annual Awards Assembly.
To receive an award students need to have received nominations from their teachers across the entire year (Semester 1 and Semester 2).
Each Semester all teachers nominate students in their classes who they believe have performed consistently or academically well. The students receiving an 'A' in their courses will automatically receive an Academic nomination.
Students who receive a determined amount of 'consistent effort' nominations across the year will receive an award in that category. Students who receive a determined amount of 'Academic' nominations or A’s across the year will receive that award. Any student receiving A’s in the majority of their courses will receive an Outstanding Academic Award.
During the event, College Special and Memorial Awards were also announced including Edmund Rice Awards. We congratulate all students who received an award, your hard work and dedication to your studies is something to be proud of.
Please see the links below for Award recipients.

Busy End of Term for Food Technology
It has been a busy end to the 2022 year for the Food Technology department. Both Year 9 and 10 Food Technology students have recently completed their last assessment for the course.
Year 9 completed a Cannelloni with Salad Practical Examination. Year 10 Food Technology completed a Chicken Cordon Bleu with Honey Carrots, Green Beans and Opera House Potatoes recipe. We were very impressed with the results and pleased that the students displayed excellent time management skills. The students also had to ensure that they worked collaboratively and paid attention to detail with the final presentation.
Year 11 Food Technology have just started their HSC course. They are currently completing a unit on Contemporary Nutrition Issues. They have just submitted their first HSC Task where they needed to research a specific diet-related condition. During the term, they had to complete some practicals that looked at health and nutrition. A great start to their HSC studies.
Year 11 Hospitality have completed their HSC work placement. The employers were very impressed with each student, and some were even offered part time work as a result. Hospitality students also completed their barista training as part of the course and have gained valuable skills in espresso coffee preparation and service.
Wishing the St Edward's College community a merry Christmas and happy new year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2023.

English Christmas Immersion Day
On Monday this week, the very first English Immersion Day was held in the ERC Foyer. The day was designed as a reward for those students from Years 7 to 11 who were awarded ‘English Star of The Month’ for October or November.
Students selected for ‘English Star of The Month’ were nominated by their English teacher based on several different categories including Academic Excellence, Consistent Effort or Special Commendation for Diligence. Students then participated in the reward Immersion Day led by Mrs Titheradge and Ms Nowalinksi. The day was divided into three sessions, each themed around Christmas. In the morning session, students repurposed old books from the College book room, turning them into a Paperback Christmas Tree and decorating them. In session two, the students were treated to a Christmas movie and in session three, students tested their Christmas knowledge with three very competitive rounds of Christmas Trivia.
The day was a great success and a lot of fun. The students were treated to recess, lunch, drinks and made their own Christmas Cookies and enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate as they relaxed and watched the film.
Many boys expressed what a wonderful time they had at the Immersion Day, and head organiser Mrs Titheradge said she is looking forward to upcoming Immersion Days in 2023, all which will be themed around literary ideas and books.
If you are interested in gaining an invite to an upcoming Immersion Day, the only way to secure an invitation is to do your best in English and gain a nomination and award for ‘English Star of The Month’ in 2023.

2023 College Swimming Carnival
We will be conducting our swimming carnival on Friday 3 February 2023 at the Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy.
Given the short turnaround with the start of school and the swimming carnival, students/parents are asked to use the below link to nominate their chosen events. Nominations will be accepted until 3pm Wednesday 1 February 2023.
Click Here to Nominate for Events
Below are some important practical details regarding the carnival:
Transport
Normal school buses will run in the morning/afternoon and students will catch a bus from the College to the pool and back again in the afternoon.
Other students may make their own way to the carnival if appropriate. All boys making their own way to the carnival need to be at the pool by 8.45am, unless they are competing in the 200m events (see next point).
Any student competing in 200m events need to be at the pool by 8.30 am at the very latest. Buses will not be at the pool by 8.30 am so these students will need to make their own transport arrangements.
All students requiring afternoon bus transport will return by bus to the College and catch the afternoon school buses under supervision as normal.
Uniform
For identification purposes, it is imperative that all students in Years 7 – 10 attend the carnival in their College sports uniform as they would do on a normal Friday. They can change into their colour house clothes at the pool. Only Years 11 and 12 are allowed to wear mufti/casual clothing.
General Directions
As maximum participation is the aim of the day, points will be allocated for every student entering an event. Any boy who attends the carnival is required to participate by:- Swimming in all events appropriate to his ability level;
- Assisting teaching staff in conducting the carnival in some capacity ie: official duties;
For supervision purposes when boys are not in races, they are to remain in the stands grouped according to their age divisions. Only the Years 10,11 and 12 will be permitted to gather on the grassed area.
Boys need to be equally prepared for cool or warmer weather and bring appropriate sun protection ie sunscreen, as the marshalling area is outdoors.
Limited canteen facilities will be available – boys are encouraged to bring their own food & drink for the day.
It is imperative that students do not bring large sums of money or valuable equipment. In these situations, it is impossible for the College to take responsibility for items that may go missing.
As the carnival is held indoors, it will be held even in the event of obvious inclement weather.
Boys who live locally or who are being picked up by their parents can leave to go home directly from the pool at the conclusion of the carnival, which should be at 2.15 pm. No boy will be permitted to leave the pool precinct prior to the conclusion of the carnival, as rolls need to be marked and the usual important formalities carried out. I particularly ask that we have parental co-operation in this matter.
Parents, carers and relatives are more than welcome to attend on the day however it is recommended you bring your own chair as seating is minimal.
The College Prefects and Leaders will be required at the pool early in the day to assist with carnival set up and again at the end of the day to assist with packing up of the carnival.
The co-operation of boys and their families with these guidelines will ensure that it is an enjoyable day for all in attendance.

BBSSSA Tennis
Tennis Champions
On Tuesday 30 November, St Edward’s competed in the Broken Bay Tennis day at Oxford Falls in Sydney.
Our two teams were incredibly successful with our Championship Boys Open Team bringing home the silver medal and our Division Two Boys team bringing home the trophy!
The Championship team narrowly missed out to the team from Mater Maria Catholic College. A special mention to Connor Murphy, whose opposition in every game was a player currently ranked 6th in Australia. The St Edward's team worked very consistently and held their own against the strong opposition.
Our Division Two team went into the final as underdogs and pulled off a last minute upset against the older and more experienced boys from St Paul's Catholic College. A fantastic result!
Championship Open Team: Conor Murphy - Year 10, Kale Puata - Year 10, Leon Towle - Year 10, Kai Maitland - Year 10
Division Two Team: Zach Barnfield - Year 10, Harrison Evans - Year 7, Aidan Matthews - Year 10

BBSSSA Surf Life Saving Carnival
On 24 November the College participated in the annual Broken Bay Diocese Surf Life Saving Carnival, held at Terrigal Beach. It was a beautiful late spring day, with a gentle 1-2 feet of swell for the water competitors, but there was limited beach space due to recent king tides for the beach competitors. This created a small operational and timetable change for the day, these changes did not affect the boys' confidence, nor their individual mindset for each of the events.
The carnival consisted of the beach events of sprints, flags and relays, while the water events were board, ski, swim, Taplin, iron man and relay. The depth of talent was demonstrated by the College fielding multiple competitors in each event, with the boys successfully dominating most events, especially the team relays and Taplin.
Without recognising every individual achievement in each event, it would be remiss not to note the Blue Ribbon event of the Ironman. This event saw the boys complete legs of swimming, board paddling and ski, with a run along soft sand between each leg. The gruelling event saw 3 competitors: Ashton Walter, Cashar Darwin and Keenan White complete the event, with Cashar leading the race by a small margin coming onto the beach from the final water leg. With only the soft sand run left, the distance between them was only a few metres. However, Cashar seemed to have put all his energy into the water legs, while Ashton had some fuel left in the tank, overtaking Cashar with only 20m left of the run to take out this prestigious event.
Keenan White and Noah Nakagawa were exemplary senior leaders on the day, being a vocal cheer squad and positively encouraging each competitor to do their best. On top of this, both boys competed across several disciplines and achieved fantastic results themselves. All boys should be extremely proud of the manner in which they both competed and represented the College, with the team taking out the Overall Boys School Champion Trophy.

ATARs will be released at 9am on Thursday 15 December 2022.
December Round 2, on Thursday 22 December, is the first offer round for Year 12 students based on ATARs.
The change of preference deadline for December Round 2 is 11.59pm on Friday 16 December.
How?
Students access their ATAR by logging in via UAC's website. They'll need their NESA Year 12 student number and UAC PIN to log in.

This year students will also be able to access and store their ATAR in a digital wallet, CredFolio, as part of UAC’s new digital credential platform. More information and registration details will be sent to students soon.
ATAR Enquiry Centre
The ATAR Enquiry Centre – (02) 9119 5012 – will be open on the following days for students who have queries about the calculation of their ATAR:
Thursday 15 December 8.30am to 6.30pm
Friday 16 December 8.30am to 4.30pm
Saturday 17 December Closed
Sunday 18 December Closed
Monday 19 December 8.30am to 4.30pm
Tuesday 20 December 8.30am to 4.30pm
Student numbers and PINs
If students have forgotten their Year 12 student number, they should contact NESA/ACTBSSS or their school. If they’ve forgotten their UAC PIN, they should call UAC Customer Service on (02) 9752 0200, 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday – they'll need their NESA/BSSS student number.
Students who have applied through UAC can reset their UAC PIN using the link on the application login page.
We don't reply to email requests for login details as we need to identify the sender before giving out this information.
ATAR estimator
UAC has launched a free ATAR estimator. ATAR Compass estimates a student’s ATAR using scaling statistics from the past five years.
Students select their HSC courses and their estimated or actual exam marks to receive an estimated ATAR, which they can use as a guide to make decisions about their future study options. The tool will also indicate if a student’s subject choices make them eligible for an ATAR.
