Diverse Learning Update
The Diverse Learning Hub has become a welcoming, warm and friendly innovative learning space and resource.
The earthy colours and acoustic features give it an encompassing vibe that students and teachers alike have embraced. Small and large spaces allow so much flexibility for a range of activities to happen simultaneously without distraction or disruption. The wobbly high stools, that are a compromise for a stand-up desk can, at times, become challenging to manage for any boy who struggles to sit still. However, once the novelty has passed, these learning spaces allow the teachers and students easy access to all including the interactive technology that is scattered throughout. As teachers and students become increasingly comfortable and skilled with the range of options offered by the Diverse Learning Hub, we will begin to realise its benefits regarding building capacity, creativity, engagement and upskilling…literally watch this space!
Home Based Learning again reared its head in 2021 and presented so many more challenges to us across a broad range of areas. From the adversity of lockdown, the Teaching Assistants have certainly increased their capacity to independently navigate and engage more of the curriculum they are covering. Breakout Rooms is what they had to become most skilled in managing and they did this with ease and confidence. They will soon return to face to face teaching, knowing that they took on the battle, won and have come out at the other end- more resilient, more competent and well-rounded as Teacher Assistants.
It is timely for me to acknowledge their dedication and commitment to their jobs. Over the past year, they have had to endure many changes and upheavals, transient for a large period due to the refurbishment. Each of them showed patience, resilience, and respect for the process.
On 10 September we had cause for celebration! Ms Elliott gave birth to a beautiful son, Connor! We wish her and her family congratulations and pray that Connor brings them joy well into the future.

Disability Provisions for HSC 2022
The New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) has developed the Disability Provisions program to assist students completing the HSC examinations, who have a special examination need.
This may be related to a physical condition, mental health issue, visual impairment, hearing loss or difficulty in reading and/or writing. The Authority aims to offer practical support to students with higher needs by providing provisions, such as separate supervision, extra time to rest/read/write, writers and/or readers.
On behalf of these students the College makes an application online to NESA submitting specific supporting documentation. When a final decision has been made, NESA will send both the College and student written notification of the approved and/or declined provisions. Please be aware that if you have been granted the use of special examination provisions by the College for internal examinations and assessments, this does not automatically deem that you will be eligible for the same provisions in the HSC examinations.
In completing the application process, evidence of the special examination need must be included, such as, medical evidence, timed essay samples, reading test results, in addition to relevant subject teacher comments. Please note that these applications should be submitted online to NESA by the end of Term 1, 2022, but can also be applied for up to the day prior to the commencement of the formal, external HSC exams.
If your son wishes to apply for these special examination provisions for the HSC exams, you should contact me, Leader of Learning - Diverse Learning, Ms Kiekebosch, before the end of this term.
If you have any queries regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by phone or email at the College.

Here at Torrens University Australia, we’re all about passionate humans, not perfect performance. That’s why you don’t need an ATAR to study with us.
We’ve shifted our focus to soft skills, because we want everyone to have the chance to achieve their academic and career goals. ATAR isn’t a true representation of hard work and future success – so just like that, we removed it as an entry requirement*.
To join us, students just need a Year 12 certificate. Then it’s just a matter of letting us help you find a course you're passionate about so you can get started on creating a career you'll love.
Secure your place today with our Early Entry Program.

Parenting Ideas – Good Decision Making
A Cool Tool to Encourage Good Decision Making
Healthy teens generally want more freedom, while parents want to make sure their young people are safe. As young people grow and demonstrate the ability to make smart choices, it’s a good idea to allow them more authority over their lives. Increasing independence involves greater freedom to choose, which demonstrates trust and faith in their ability to make good decisions.
Brain research shows that teenagers in the 13- to 18-year-old age group need help and guidance around decision making. The pleasure-seeking part of their brain tends to dominate the reasoning part of the brain during this stage and later as well.
Safe, fair, smart
Here is a cool tool to prompt young people to make smart decisions, particularly when you are not around. Give your young person these three questions to ask themselves to help them assess the safety and suitability of any activity or behaviour that they are about to participate in:
Is it safe? This question helps them to assess risk.
Is it fair? This question helps them to be sociable and consider others.
Is it smart? (And is it in my long-term best interests)? This question encourages them to think ahead, which isn't a typical teenager's strong point.
The safe, fair, smart tool needs to be used often so that will sink in.
Promoting independence in our adolescents is hard work for parents as we are always treading a fine line between being too protective and allowing young people more freedom. However, if young people are to learn how to make smart choices, we adults need to equip them with the processes as well as the opportunities to do so.
