Year 10 Retreat
The Year 10 Retreat was once again held on campus this year, providing students with a meaningful and reflective experience in a familiar environment. Hosting the retreat at the College allowed for a well-structured and engaging day that fostered personal growth, deep discussions, and spiritual enrichment.
Throughout the retreat, students participated in various discussion groups covering important themes such as self-awareness, personal values, and the qualities that define a good man. These discussions encouraged students to reflect on their own lives, relationships, and moral compasses, fostering a greater sense of responsibility and integrity.
A highlight of the day was a thought-provoking presentation by Mr Speziale, their dedicated Pastoral Leader, who spoke about the complexities of relationships. His insightful talk resonated with students, prompting meaningful conversations and personal reflections on how to build and maintain positive connections with others.
The retreat concluded with a reverent and reflective liturgy, during which students actively participated in prayers and readings, reinforcing the day’s themes of self-discovery and spiritual growth. The respectful behaviour and attentiveness of all students did not go unnoticed, with teachers commending their engagement and maturity throughout the event.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the organisation and facilitation of this inspiring and spiritually enriching day. It was a truly valuable experience that will no doubt leave a lasting impact on the students as they continue their journey through senior school and beyond.

Year 6 Enjoy ‘A Day in the Life’
Excitement and anticipation filled the air as over 260 Year 6 students from more than 30 schools arrived at St Edward’s College for our highly anticipated A Day in the Life.
They were warmly welcomed by our dedicated teachers and enthusiastic Year 10 student helpers, setting the stage for a memorable day ahead.
The day commenced in the Edmund Rice Centre, where our Principal, Mr Bonnici, extended a heartfelt welcome to the students, encouraging them to embrace the opportunities that lay before them.
A series of engaging activities awaited the students, providing them with a first-hand glimpse into life as an ‘Eddies’ young man:
Science: Students witnessed captivating demonstrations designed to spark their curiosity and love for discovery.
Art: Creativity flourished as students explored various artistic techniques under the guidance of our talented teachers.
Music: Led by our music teachers and student musicians, students experimented with instruments and even participated in a short performance.
Woodwork: Hands-on learning took centre stage as students acquired basic woodworking skills, crafting a simple project to take home.
PDHPE: Physical activity and teamwork were the focus in an energetic session designed to promote fitness and collaboration.
Library Learning Centre: Students explored the College’s extensive library, discovering the wealth of resources available to support their future learning.
As the day came to a close, students left with smiles on their faces, new friendships formed, and a sense of excitement for the journey ahead.

Clean4shore Report
On Tuesday, 4 March, students participated in the Clean4shore program, demonstrating their commitment to environmental conservation.
Despite overcast skies and a very low tide limiting access to Erina Bay, the students worked diligently to remove litter from various mangrove areas.
The cleanup began in the mangroves adjacent to the main oval, where students collected litter predominantly originating from stormwater drains along the Central Coast Highway. The team then crossed to the Green Point mangroves, where only small amounts of litter were found, but five car tyres were retrieved.
Yattalonga mangroves proved to have a higher concentration of small litter, with students filling five full bags in addition to removing oyster baskets, a kayak, mattresses, and timber. Due to the low tide, all collected waste had to be carried 50 metres to the barge. Meanwhile, on Sunday’s Clean Up Australia Day, Dave Read and Graham Pace gathered five full bags of litter from the Erina Creek mangroves, which were then loaded onto the barge.
Further efforts in Erina Creek led to the removal of three crab traps and three additional bags of small litter. Additionally, an abandoned campsite near a local hotel was thoroughly cleaned, with bulk rubbish being collected from the area.
The morning concluded with a significant haul of rubbish being returned to the school. Students and staff alike enjoyed a productive and rewarding experience, making a tangible difference in their local environment

Adventure and Exploration at Year 9 Camp
The Year 9 Camp to Wee Jasper proved to be an immensely enjoyable experience for students and staff.
The students exhibited commendable behaviour throughout and pushed themselves to engage in many activities outside of their comfort zone, in particular caving and abseiling. With the weather favouring the occasion, being warm and dry, much of the downtime was spent along the banks of the tranquil Goodradigbee River that meandered nearby the campsite.
The array of activities provided a diverse and enriching experience for all and were appreciated by all.

Paper Planes and Pizza Night
I am Marcus Missio-Spiteri, and I work alongside Terase Killin as a School Counsellor here at St Edward's.
Our dad's group Male Connect held their 5th annual Paper Planes and Pizza night on Friday 28 February. This group focuses on Year 7 students and their fathers, father figures and significant male role models. In total, we had 88 attendees, which is a great turn out. Events like this cannot happen without the support and care of many staff. So I would like to take the opportunity to once again thank Terase Killin, Keith Mills, Nathan Marks, Mark Bonnici, Brandon Karakatsanis and Vic Olbromski from IT, Kylie Beynon, Brenda Donnelly, Trent Claridge and maintenance team, and Dan, Jane, and Kasey from the canteen.
The purpose of Male Connect is to involve fathers, father figures and significant male role models from the community into the school to work with our students and become positive mentors to not only their own child, but others as well. There is an increasing amount of research that shows initiatives like Male Connect,
"recognise the importance of school partnerships with families. The research shows that by specifically targeting fathers, 'schools will see significant additional benefits for the children and for the school as a whole' and The Connection between father's and their children inevitably becomes stronger".
To further our understanding of this, we had the pleasure of our guest speaker Dr Wayne Warburton (wayne.warburton@mq.edu.au) who presented his research on adolescent development and gaming. Dr Warburton is happy for you to contact him if you would like further information about his research and programs he runs for adolescents and gaming.
Positive feedback was given by those present indicating that it helped them understand how to have a better connection with their child and help alleviate the possible ‘addictive’ aspect of their child’s brain by changing patterns of behaviour.
After lots of running around playing basketball and table tennis while the dads were listening intently to Dr Warburton, the students were eager to get together with their dads and show their prowess in making planes and throwing the furthest. The overall winner was Lachlan Maxwell with a whopping 18 metre throw. All in all, everyone had fun, even the adult men gave it a shot to show “how it’s done”.
This event takes place every year with our new Year 7 cohort. We can’t wait for the next one and continuing making the connection between Year 7 students and their fathers and significant male role models in their life. So if you know friends, family or you may have another child entering St Edward’s in 2026, please pass on the message that this takes place.
It was great to seeing all those who attended the event. It is greatly appreciated and warming seeing you so involved and engaged with your children.
With Gratitude
Marcus Missio-Spiteri (School Counsellor)

Years 7 to 12 Student Led Conferences
The Year 7 to 12 Student Led Conferences for parents/carers and students for Term One will be held across two dates:
Friday 28 March 2025 (Week 8) from 9.00am to 3.00pm – these conferences will be held face-to-face on-site at St Edward’s College. Teachers will be in designated rooms throughout the College – a map including this information will be sent out before the conference date. Students from the Prefect body will be on-site to help guide parents/carers in finding their way around the College.
No classes are scheduled for the day as students will be required to attend the Learning Conferences with their parents and carers. Students who do not have scheduled Learning Conferences are to remain at home.
Wednesday 2 April 2025 (Week 9) from 4.00pm to 7:30pm – these conferences will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Teachers will call the students on their Microsoft Teams account at the scheduled booking time. It is preferable that students use their school laptop for this.
Microsoft Teams meetings will not be recorded by teaching staff, and we request that parents and students not record meetings either.
Student Led Conferences are an important opportunity for parents and teachers to meet with students and discuss their learning reflections and goals for the future, while giving feedback and suggestions on ways in which they can improve. Due to this, it is expected that students are present for the conferences.
Parents/carers will be able to book appointments for the online afternoon/evening or the face-to-face conferences. All interviews will be of seven minutes duration. If you are attending the face-to-face conferences at the College, it is recommended that you leave a gap in between each booking – this will allow for movement around the College and will ensure you can attend each booking on time.
The Student Led Conference bookings are managed with an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher Online (PTO) – now also called “Booked”. The steps to access PTO are outlined below. Once completed, you will receive an email from PTO allowing you to book interviews with your son’s teachers whom you wish to see. Please note that bookings are limited.
Access to PTO will be available from Thursday 20 March 2025 at 7:00pm and will be closed off for bookings two days before interviews.
If you encounter any problems using PTO, please contact the school office on 4321 6400.

The Beginning of Lent
On Wednesday, 4 March, our students gathered to acknowledge the beginning of Lent and reflect on its significance within the liturgical year.
Lent is a sacred 40-day journey that starts on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. During this time, Catholics are called to deepen their understanding of Jesus’ suffering, death, and Resurrection at Easter.
This season invites Catholics to reflect on moments where they may have struggled to love God, their neighbour, and themselves, while seeking opportunities for healing and renewal.

Year 7 Religious Education
This term, 7Core1 has been actively engaged in getting to know one another and exploring what it means to belong to the Catholic community at St Edward’s College.
As part of our journey, we participated in a spirituality walk, which allowed us to discover and reflect on the various religious symbols around the school that highlight our Catholic identity.
During our walk, we visited the statue of Edmund Rice in the Quad, where we learned about his legacy and the values that continue to shape our school community. We also spent time in the chapel, where we explored the symbolism within the Edmund Rice icon, deepening our understanding of his faith and mission. Another special moment was gathering in the yarning circle, where we came together in prayer, reinforcing the importance of reflection and unity within our class.
One of the most enjoyable activities this term was sharing our "Belonging Showbags." This task allowed us to express our unique identities and experiences, while also strengthening friendships and connections with our classmates. Through this activity, we not only learned more about each other’s backgrounds and interests but also developed a greater sense of community and inclusion within our class.
Overall, this term has been a meaningful introduction to life at St Edward’s, filled with opportunities to connect, reflect, and embrace the values that define our school.
