Waterford Project
Welcome back to our College community for 2022
Waterford Project
The College has been conducting this mandatory Social Justice program for over 20 years. Each student in Years 8-11 is required to complete at least 15 hours of service for others, by the end of Term 3.
Please ask your son to see me or his Religious Education teacher for more information.
Please contact me if you have any questions about Waterford.
Your son will have the program explained clearly to him in the next week.
St Edward’s is guided by the Touchstones, our Edmund Rice Education Australia theme, which runs across all EREA schools.
Why Do We Engage Ourselves and Our Students in the Waterford Project?
This is the absolute key question to discuss, among ourselves, within ourselves and with our students in Religious Education classes. Discernment and reflection will create a clear path for us all on the question and will also lead to greater motivation and outcomes for our boys. We are not simply humanitarian, it runs via a deeper response to the Good News – a Christian context in our Catholic tradition.
It is so important that boys are constantly engaged in class discussions and individually, as to why we do Waterford!
Some likely answers are:
Jesus Teaches and Edmund Rice demonstrates the Call. We follow, as disciples. It is sacramental and a key part of the Catholic worldview and Papal teaching: 'Act justly, love tenderly, walk humbly with God', Micah. 'Love one another', Jesus.
Our broad stated College values: Liberating Education, and Justice and Solidarity (Touchstones)
We enact and activate what we say, the Gospel is more than words.
Helps boys to consider future job/career opportunities, via exposure to people on the margins and the agencies and people who work to support them.
It develops a person, by engaging with people on the margins - formational, for life.
It can often be a fun, happy experience - make new friends, meet new people.
First 5 weeks of 2022, due to COVID-related restrictions, service could be:
Home-based eg babysitting younger siblings; helping younger children with reading, musical instruments, sports skills; contacting elderly neighbours; cleaning/fixing gardens, etc
Online Advocacy campaigns eg for refugees and asylum seekers.
Fundraising campaigns.

Welcome Year 7
It was wonderful to see the confidence with which Year 7 started their first day.
Standing at the gates to greet our newest students it was clear that the only teary eyes were that of parents watching their sons make this big leap into high school.
Watching the boys greet one another it was clear just how eager students are to be back in the playground and connecting with their peers and our biggest goal for these early days is to support existing friendships and establish new ones.
Congratulations to our 218 new Eddies boys!

News from the Visual Arts Faculty
As the new year starts, we must take time to congratulate those senior Visual Arts students who completed their Bodies of Work under trying circumstances.
A special mention goes to Jaden Beard and Will Jacobsen, for having their work accepted into Art Express and Hurstville Zoomers Exhibitions, respectively.
Jaden’s work, “Sacre”, is a collection of Video, installation and voiceover that portray his deep connection to the ocean and to being underwater.
Will’s work, “Loneliness is a Feeling”, demonstrates through animation the trials of loneliness and the ways in which it affects the human psyche.
The next batch of HSC Visual Arts students have begun toiling away at their Bodies of Work. So far their ideas have morphed from drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, ceramics and photography. The boys must produce evidence of their work using their Art Diary and have found an artist whom influences their style.
Year 11 Visual Arts students have started working on portraiture and ink drop charcoal drawings. Year 11 Photography are using film cameras (yes, they do exist!) and working on learning their way around the darkroom.
It is exciting to be able to continue with practical lessons in the face of COVID limitations – the Year 7’s and 8’s have had a whole semester of practical lessons lost last year, so it’s exciting to see what they will produce!

Disability Provisions for HSC 2022
The New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) has developed the Disability Provisions program to assist students completing the HSC examinations, who have a special examination need.
This may be related to a physical condition, mental health issue, visual impairment, hearing loss or difficulty in reading and/or writing. The Authority aims to offer practical support to students with higher needs by providing provisions, such as separate supervision, extra time to rest/read/write, writers and/or readers.
On behalf of these students the College makes an application online to NESA submitting specific supporting documentation. When a final decision has been made, NESA will send both the College and student written notification of the approved and/or declined provisions. Please be aware that if you have been granted the use of special examination provisions by the College for internal examinations and assessments, this does not automatically deem that you will be eligible for the same provisions in the HSC examinations.
In completing the application process, evidence of the special examination need must be included, such as, medical evidence, timed essay samples, reading test results, in addition to relevant subject teacher comments. Please note that these applications should be submitted online to NESA by the end of Term 1, 2022, but can also be applied for up to the day prior to the commencement of the formal, external HSC exams.
If your son wishes to apply for these special examination provisions for the HSC exams, you should contact me, Leader of Learning - Diverse Learning, Ms Kiekebosch, before the end of this term.
If you have any queries regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by phone or email at the College.

Parenting Ideas – Managing Stress During the Pandemic
Managing School Stress During the Pandemic
The pandemic continues to bring challenges to families in another year where learning may take place in person, online or somewhere in between. The Scouting motto “Be prepared” with the addition of “for anything” comes to mind as we approach another school year of uncertainty.
Here’s what you can do to take the stress out school this year.
If Your Child Attends Class In-Person
Ask about their concerns
Avoid generalised assumptions about COVID. Your child may not be bothered by the virus, but they may be worried about wearing a mask to school or making friends if they’ve spent time in remote learning. Drill down to their specific worries about going to school and allay their fears by helping them come up with simple solutions to address their concerns.
Allay your own fears
It’s natural to be concerned about your child’s health so get the facts about social distancing, sanitising and other COVID-safe measures teachers are taking at school. Having accurate information will allay your own fears and minimise the chances of your child being unduly anxious about going to school.
Put your own germ-avoidance measures in place
Initiate habits to reduce the risk of your child bringing COVID home to your family. Changing out of clothes, showering as soon as they get home, washing hands regularly and social distancing from older relatives are the types of measures that help reduce the spread of coronavirus. Keep up to date with the latest health advice and involve everyone in creating a COVID-safe family plan.
If Your Child Learns Remotely
Create a personal learning space
Anchor your child’s learning to a familiar place at home. Your child may need a private space away from others for them to focus on specific tasks. If you don’t have a separate nook or cranny, consider hanging an old sheet from the ceiling or using a temporary divider to provide privacy. Be mindful that there will be times when your child or young person wants to work in the company of others so be prepared for them to set up a work station near in a public place.
Get them moving about
Kids are used to moving around during the school day so encourage them to spend learning time in different places. Perhaps they can spend some time in a bean bag reading a book, use an ironing board as a stand-up desk or prop up on their elbows in the hallway to complete a set task. Get them outdoors as well. Neuroscience informs us that outdoor activities supports kids’ mental and physical health and promotes learning.
Allow screen time with friends
Social isolation is a recognised problem for both primary and secondary school students during remote learning so give your child ample time for digital catch ups with friends. Socialising may mean playing online games, using Snapchat and other age-appropriate social media platforms.
If Your Child Does a Hybrid Model With Some Days in Person and Other Days Remote
Make it clear what’s expected each day
Have two charts - one with the in-person schedule and one with the remote schedule, where your child can see it clearly. Each night go over the required schedule with them for the following day. Encourage older students to create two schedules in their personal calendars or timetables to help them stay on track.
Ensure remote learning days mirror in person days
Routines help kids feel safe and be ready for learning. On remote learning days your child should wake up at the same time as they do when they attend school, have breakfast and get dressed at the same time ready to settle into work.
Reassure your child that this arrangement is temporary
Kids don’t always have the same perspective as adults and may think the current measures will always be this way. Reassure them that they will go back to school, see their friends and enjoy activities as they did before the pandemic.
Stay flexible
A hybrid learning model may not suit every child so be prepared to consult with your child’s teachers if this system causes too much stress. It may be best if your child switches to a fully at-home learning model so work with teachers for a suitable solution.
For Parents
Take a break yourself
Kids take their emotional cues from their parents so model self-care for your child. If you a tightly wound ball yourself, they’ll more likely become anxious and worried themselves. Regardless of the situation, take a break each day. Go for a walk, read a book, do something that helps you to unwind, or engage in activity that you enjoyed as a child.
