Truth Telling Session – NAIDOC Week
During the school holidays the nation celebrated NAIDOC Week. The theme for 2023 is - For Our Elders.
Across every generation, Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They guide future generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today. We draw strength from their knowledge and experience, in everything from land management, cultural knowledge to justice and human rights. Across multiple sectors like health, education, the arts, politics, and everything in between, they have set the many courses we follow.
The struggles of our Elders help to move us forward today. The equality we continue to fight for is found in their fight. Their tenacity and strength has carried the survival of the oldest continuous culture in the world.
As part of our NAIDOC Week events, on Friday 27 July, the staff and students of St Edward’s College embraced the 2023 NAIDOC theme and were fortunate enough to have three survivors of the Kinchela Boys Home – Uncle James Welsh, Uncle Roger Jarrett and Uncle William Nixon, present their stories in a truth-telling session. The morning started with a Welcome to Country by Central Coast bloodline Custodian Brad Twynham.
[smallgallery fooid="46364"]
The College was then shown a video which detailed some of the conditions the boys lived in during their time at Kinchela, after they were kidnapped from their families. Each man spoke about his experiences - the cruelty they endured, the life-long affects being taken had on their families, culture and identity and their hopes for a more reconciled Australia. Many staff and students were shocked and angered by the events and felt fortunate to hear about such a dark time in Australia’s history directly from those involved.
We wish to extend a very big thank you to Uncle Roger, Uncle William and Uncle James for their bravery and honesty and their willingness to answer questions from our students.
Some information on Kinchela Boys Home from their website:
Kinchela Aboriginal Boys Home Training Home (KBH) was a ‘home’ run by the NSW Government for over 50 years (1924 – 1970) to house Aboriginal boys forcibly removed from their families. It is a place of deep importance for survivors, their families and communities. KBH was built on the stolen land of the Dunghutti. The site and its associated places hold memories, both painful and otherwise, of their childhood after being kidnapped from their families and deliberately re-programmed in order to assimilate into white Australian society. The place itself, historical records and the memories and stories of survivors provide tangible evidence of these destructive past Government policies and practices for the education and understanding of all Australians.

Founder’s Day 2023
Founder's Day 2023, Week 5 Friday: Celebrating Our College, Our Founder, and Our Community
Founder's Day is an annual celebration where we honour our College and its visionary founder, Edmund Rice. It is a time for us to deepen our sense of community and commitment to serving others. Edmund Rice serves as a role model, teaching us the importance of standing with the disadvantaged, prioritising others, and being genuinely good human beings. Through his example, we strive to promote dignity and respect for our fellow men and women.
[caption id="attachment_46440" align="alignright" width="210"] Fredrick Were[/caption]
This year holds special significance in the history of St Edward's as it marks the 70th Anniversary of our esteemed College. With such a milestone occasion, the focus of Founder's Day in 2023 will revolve around this significant event. Each homeroom will embark on a project that encapsulates the spirit of Eddie's legacy. These projects will be completed on Friday during Week 5, fostering a stronger sense of community among students and raising vital funds for the education of Fredrick Were from Kenya. To support our sponsorship of Fredrick, we kindly request students to bring in a Gold Coin donation. In return, they will receive a delicious sausage sandwich for lunch.
Numerous exciting projects are already in progress across different homerooms, ranging from candle making and collaborative artworks to frisbee golf and basketball shooting competitions. Some homerooms have organized bake sales and other raffle/guessing competitions to raise additional funds for Fredrick's education. Prizes will be awarded to homerooms with the most creative projects and those that best embody the core values of our College and the St Edward’s spirit.
There will be many opportunities for students to participate in different activities and buy some delicious treats, so students are encouraged to bring some small change on the day if this interests them. All proceeds raised will be going to various charitable organisations and the sponsoring of Fredrick. Activities and goods being sold include:
Cans of Soft Drink
Bake Sale
Bingo
Soccer Goal Kicking
Raffles
Wet Sponge Throwing at Teachers
Lolly Guessing Competition
We eagerly anticipate a day filled with fun and community-building activities, where our values of service and positive relationship building can truly shine through.

Leader of Justice, Peace and Advocacy

News From the Environment Portfolio
Trash Free Tuesday at St Edward's is becoming a tradition and part of the College culture.
Something the boys (or their parents and carers) do without thinking. The program started nearly 6 years ago when our current Year 12 were in Year 7 which is a sign the initiative has been well supported by both staff and students. It would be interesting to calculate the amount of plastic that has been saved over the last 6 years!
Recently the maths faculty created a yearly assessment task based on Trash Free Tuesday where students study the data and respond to questions relating to different trends that they can see. It is great to see this initiative being used in the curriculum so that students are getting the message from multiple angles. Thanks to Alex Isbester for driving this and finding a way of calculating these statistics digitally.
Home Room Participation in Trash Free Tuesday, Week 2
Flick the Switch
Students in the Environment Portfolio are currently working on several initiatives relating to our carbon footprint. Students came up with the idea of creating an initiative ‘Flick the Switch’, where students were encouraged to switch off the light when they leave a room, thus reducing the carbon footprint at the College (and maybe at home as well). Students also came up with an initiative to have a whole day without using power. This initiative is still in the planning but it has great potential and we look forward to seeing what happens with the idea.

Make a Wave
St Eddie's Surfers 'Make a Wave' for SurfAid
In the month of September any surfers, students, staff and families, of St Edward's are invited to join the St Eddie's Surfers Make a Wave group to raise vital funds and awareness for the incredible work that SurfAid does across remote regions of the surfing world.
The premise is simple; surf everyday during the month of September, track how many surfs you have and raise money for SurfAid. In the 2022 'Make a Wave' month, $645,000 was raised globally.
All students who participate in this great initiative will be able to gain Waterford Hours for the surfs that they have.

Exploring Creativity and Growth in Visual Arts
As we launch into a new semester, we are pleased to share with you the latest happenings from our Visual Arts department. From the culmination of our Year 12 students' educational journey to the blossoming talents of our younger artists, there's much to celebrate and anticipate.
Year 12: Nearing the Finish Line
Our Year 12 students are approaching the end of their academic journey, and their dedication and resilience has been evident throughout. They are currently in the midst of their Trial HSC Exams for which we wish them all the best! This assessment serves as a steppingstone towards their final HSC examinations, providing valuable insights into their progress and areas for improvement.
Their Major Works, which they have been developing since Term 4 last year, are in their final stages, and we are excited to see the results of their hard work. The creative endeavours of these students promises to reflect not just their artistic skills, but also their unique perspectives and growth throughout their time in Visual Arts.
Celebrating Creativity: TAS and Art Display Night
We cordially invite you to join us on Monday, August 28, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm for the TAS and Art Display Night. This evening is an opportunity for our students to share their Major Projects with the community. The culmination of their hard work and dedication will be on full display, providing a glimpse into the diverse range of artistic expressions nurtured within our department.
[smallgallery fooid="46405"]
Exploring Art Beyond the Classroom: Year 9 and 10
Recently, our Year 9 Visual Arts students embarked on an inspiring excursion to the Gosford Regional Art Gallery. They had the chance to immerse themselves in the exhibitions of William Kentridge and Robert Bennetts, drawing inspiration from their works. Additionally, the students explored the beauty of the Japanese Garden behind the Gallery, capturing their impressions through photography and sketches. Such excursions provide a unique opportunity for students to broaden their artistic horizons and draw inspiration from the wider art world.
Year 10 Photography will venture to Sydney on Wednesday for an immersive Photographic tour of the Harbour and CBD. Guided by our experienced teachers, students will develop skills in composition, framing, alternate perspectives, long exposure and capturing images spontaneously with confidence.
Year 10 Visual Arts have been exploring contemporary art practices by venturing into the natural landscape we are lucky enough to be surrounded by at school. Students have taken inspiration from artists like Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Shilling and created temporal site-specific works using natural materials from the site. This task is designed to strengthen each student's connection to their local land and extend their artmaking practice beyond the canvas.
Nurturing Young Talent: Year 7 and 8
The creative journey of our younger artists in Years 7 and 8 has been a highlight this year. They have been engaged in a variety of art projects, experimenting with different mediums, and developing their artistic skills. As they refine their artistic skills, they are also cultivating their ability to analyse and interpret artworks, fostering a deeper appreciation for the creative process and developing the skills to think independently, persevere when challenged and problem solve effectively.
Year 8 Electives: Choosing Visual Arts and/or Photography
To our Year 8 students, the exciting world of Visual Arts beckons. As you contemplate your elective choices, we encourage you to consider the dynamic and enriching journey that Visual Arts has to offer. With a curriculum that fosters both technical skills and creative thinking, it's a chance to explore your artistic passions and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts. The Photography course also seeks to develop your skills in photographic and digital media, focusing on both digital and analog photography, creating short films, building your online presence and developing your eye for composition and design.
Thank You!
We extend our gratitude to our teachers, students, and parents for their continued support of the Visual Arts department. It is through your dedication that our students are able to thrive and find their artistic voices. We look forward to sharing more artistic achievements and experiences in the months ahead. Stay tuned for further updates, and remember to mark your calendars for TAS and Art Display Night on August 28!

The aim of these sessions was to provide the boys with a friendly and quiet space to prepare for their upcoming Trial Examinations, with the aid of their teachers. A huge thank you also to the teachers who ran presentations or who made themselves available for the students’ questions. These included: Anne McDonald, Scott Massey, Tom Anderson, Michael Gentle, Vanessa Henderson, Sarah Moulton, Luke LePage, Jacqui Quennelle, Annette Rankin, Mark Austin, Kristen Mantellato, Jay Brown, Elissa Bailey and Daniel Kent. There was a lot of positive feedback from teachers and students and we wish the Year 12 cohort the very best in their Trial Examinations.

Under 13 Rugby League
The St Edward's Under 13 Rugby League team displayed remarkable sportsmanship at the BBSSSA Gala Day held at Morry Breen Oval on Wednesday, 2 August 2023.
Participating in four matches, the team secured two impressive victories and had two closely contested losses. The boys' tenacity and determination were evident as they fiercely vied for possession of the ball and executed strategies to keep the ball moving from 'wing to wing' in the wet conditions. This enthusiasm to keep the ball moving demonstrated their understanding of the game's nuances and their dedication to collaborative teamwork.
What truly set the team apart was their unyielding courage, even when faced with adversity. During moments when the referee's call seemed unfavorable, the boys exemplified an unwavering support for each other in the true spirit of the game. This camaraderie proved instrumental in maintaining their high spirits throughout the day.
Despite the disappointing defeats, it is evident that the Under 13 boys have a promising future ahead in the 'black and red'. A standout of the day was Jamie Vernon, whose exceptional performance earned him the well-deserved title of 'Player of the Day'.
The Under 13 Rugby League team's participation in the BBSSSA Gala Day was a resounding success, not for the remarkable wins but rather the closely contested matches and an unwavering team spirit. Their ability to overcome challenges and uplift each other bodes well for a promising future together.

UAC News
All Courses Available Soon
All 2024 courses from UAC’s participating institutions will be available on UAC’s website in early August.
For students who have already applied, this is a good time for them to log in to their application and review and update their preferences.
For students who haven’t yet applied, the early bird period ends on Friday 29 September, at which time the processing fee increases. Even if they’re not sure what course they want to study, they should apply before then and put in any course as a placeholder until they are ready to decide.
UAC PIN Reminder
In early August, an email will be sent to Year 12 students who haven’t applied to remind them of their UAC PIN. PINs will be emailed to the address they have registered with NESA, so they need to ensure that this is a current email address.
To start their UAC application, students will need their NESA Year 12 student number or ACT BSSS number and their UAC PIN. Once they have applied, they use their UAC application number and UAC PIN to log in and manage their application.
If students don’t have their UAC PIN email, or are having problems with their PIN, they can read the PIN FAQs or contact UAC
Early Offers
Students can apply for an early offer through UAC’s Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS). Once they’ve completed the standard UAC application, they need to submit a separate application for SRS before 18 September.
ATAR Eligibility Changes 2025
ATAR eligibility rules are changing in 2025. Board Developed courses will no longer be classified as Category A or Category B. This means that 2023 Year 10 students will be able to study more VET framework courses and have them included in the calculation of their ATAR in 2025.
Access and Scholarship Programs
Applications for the Schools Recommendation Scheme, Educational Access Scheme and Equity Scholarships are all open and application guides are available to download.
If you have students who may be eligible for these schemes, encourage them to start their applications as soon as they've submitted their UAC undergraduate application.
Connect With Us - UAC Digital
UAC Digital offers a series of webinars on topics relevant to students, careers advisers, parents, and anyone navigating their path to higher education.
The next scheduled event is Let’s Chat – Applying to the Schools Recommendation Scheme on Wednesday 6 September.

Information Pack
The highlights of the "American Summers" program that sets it apart (and a large part of the reason for my change) is in the program price and value.
· A better placement process: This program allows students to be actively involved with the placement. They can research over 700 Camps on our books to choose to interview with, as we will also match them up to camps based on our experience and knowledge and then the student can choose.
· An affordable program: The program is only $480, which is a few hundred dollars lower than the other companies.
· Highest earnings: Minimum US$2000 for the 9 week placement
· 4 Months Insurance: Insurance for their entire program (9 weeks of working at Summer Camp and 60 days of travel / sightseeing in the USA before/after camp). Other companies just cover the time at camp (about 9 weeks) and then the students are having to pay a lot more money to get insurance coverage for the travel time.
· Top level customer service and support: Lead by myself, the Australian and USA team will support them through the entire process. IENA also as a 100% placement record for placing Australians at camps.
The “American Summers” Camp program https://americansummers.com/ is a perfect fit for students wanting to take a gap year before starting University/College or Tafe, while they study, or once they graduate.
For those that do go into University/TAFE or College we also offer Work programs to the USA that run during their Uni Holidays or once they graduate.

The Macquarie Leaders and Achievers Early Entry Scheme opened last term. Applications for round 1 have closed, but we are still accepting applications for round 2 until Thursday, 31 August.
Students should apply by the final deadline on 31 August to be considered for an early entry offer.
KEY DATES FOR MACQUARIE LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS
Round 2 applications close: 11:59pm, Thursday, 31 August
Round 1 outcomes released: Monday, 4 September 2023
Round 2 outcomes released: Thursday, 28 September
Tips when advising your students:
Students should diversify their preferences. We recommend choosing a range of degrees with varying entry requirements by using published selection ranks as a guide.
Students should not include brand new activities or examples in their reflection that aren't previously described in their 2-3 example activities. The reflection should only focus on the activities already provided.
Students need to be more detailed when indicating their tasks and responsibilities and not just supply a general role description.
Referees for activities must be carefully chosen. We recommend placing a supervisor or leader that can confirm their involvement; and discourage placing parents (unless working in a family-owned business), friends or themselves as referees.
As always, activities provided must demonstrate leadership skills, personal development and dedication through extracurricular activities (see examples) and students need to double-check all parts of their application before submitting. No changes can be made afterwards.
You can still book an early entry workshop for your Year 12 students. Email us at schools@mq.edu.au to request a Macquarie Leaders and Achievers Early Entry workshop
Open Day is a great way to explore our campuses and get a taste of life at the University of Tasmania. You can hear all about our courses, course and career pathways, accommodation, scholarships, social clubs and sporting teams – directly from the experts - our students and teaching staff.
Our events are packed with exciting hands-on activities, demonstrations, great food, live music and more.
Did you know we are ranked number 1 in the world for Climate Action?
We are pretty proud of this, but we don't take this lightly and are always looking at new ways to do better. This year we are slashing the amount of traditional printed materials used at Open Day. You'll have on the spot digital access to our flyers, and if you speak to any of our team they can directly email you a flyer and any notes shortly after the event. This way you get all the info you want. And if you wish to take a printed copy with you, there will be print-on-demand stations available on the day.

The session will draw from my experience working as Assistant Director of Admissions at a US university and cover the application process as well as the higher education system in the US. We've seen a substantial increase in interest and successful student application outcomes, even comparing to pre-covid times.
Study in the US.
Wednesday 23 August at 6pm AEST

The free presentation is best suited for students and their families in Years 9, 10, and 11.

Parent Tips – Teenage Friendships
Teenage friendships evolve, becoming more intricate and built on trust.
As our children transition to secondary school, they might face challenges in maintaining and changing these relationships. It takes time for teenagers to find like-minded peers and form healthy, close bonds.
During this phase, teenagers explore their identities, emotions, and abilities, mingling with different groups. They may realise that some friendships or groups are no longer suitable for them, seeking out healthier connections.
As parents we need to support our teenagers by fostering open communication and understanding, letting them know that changes in friendships is normal during the teen years.
Help guide them as they navigate teenage friendships, helping them to recognise healthy relationships and make informed choices about their social circles.
Top Tips
Disagreements are normal: Remind them that friends sometimes have disagreements with each other – but you can always apologise and learn to forgive each other.
Have casual conversations:with your teen about friendships. Talk about topics such as; what makes a good friend, what is the difference between being popular and being a good friend, how to look after your friendships.
It's ok to outgrow friends: People change as they find new interests and people to hang out with as they mature.
