College Mural
We are very excited to announce another College first this year.
St Edward’s College has been fortunate enough to have their first College Mural designed and painted by Local Aboriginal Artists Grant Molony, Russ Molony and Jason Goulding. In consultation with the artists, our Aboriginal students, local community and Elders on the Central Coast, it was decided that local animals that are present on the Coast and ones that have significance within local Aboriginal culture would be included in the mural. These include a Sea Eagle, Kookaburra, Stingray, Sea Turtle and Eel. The four house colours have been incorporated into the artwork and into the future, four of the animals will be aligned with a house to become their totem. The artwork took place over four days and we thank the community of St Edward’s for being respectful of the site during this time. Grant said many classes came down to watch them work and they had several discussions with students and staff throughout the process.
From the Artists:
In our Aboriginal culture we have three families. Our immediate family, our community and mother herself, the natural environment.
These are the foundations of connection, inclusion and ownership. Represented through three clear realms of land, sky and sea.
The interwoven connection of sky, land and sea. Spoken through the amazing natural world on our doorstep.
The land will be warm and caring.
The sky is breath and stillness.
The sea calming and cooling.
Our work speaks of a journey readable both ways. A travel story of learning and growth both intriguing and inspiring coming from either sky or sea.
Uplifting with an underlying voice of strength and respect.
Thank you Grant, Russ and Jason for all your hard work and for opening Reconciliation Week with this beautiful legacy.

The Push Up Challenge
St Edward's College is now registered as a Team for The Push Up Challenge and kicks off this Thursday 1st June.
If you would like to join the team please follow the link Click Here
The link will be added into the daily notices for students to join to help raise awareness for Mental Health. Homerooms are encouraged to take part to get the momentum going – we’d love to see some pics for the daily notices or touchstones, so send them through.
If students raise a minimum of $20 they will earn 1 hr of Waterford Hours. If they raise more than this, Mr Rozario, Leader of Learning Social Justice will determine. Plus earn 30 minutes for Waterford every 100 push-ups completed, up to a 6 hour maximum.
Sounds like too many push-ups? No problem, alternatives to push-ups are allowed and many people take on half of the target instead of 1,572.
It is free to take part and there is an app where you can check how you and others in our team are going.
If you're keen to get involved, check out our page:
https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraisers/steddies
Would be great to have you taking part in the push for better mental health.

Camp Girri Girra
Stage 5 Immersion into the art, knowledge, country, and cultural practices of First Nations people.
Before starting our Art unit on Abstracted Nature, students came together to learn cultural practices that would allow them to fully respect and understand First Nations people and their art.
This included immersion on Country, learning bush food and medicine, learning communication skills such as hearing with your whole body, and taking time to respond respectfully. We investigated making tools and fire, the different uses of bark, sap, and charcoal. We also examined First Nations astrology and decided we were ready to delve deeper into qualities such as trust in each other.
“From the Girri Girra Camp we were immersed in Aboriginal traditions and culture. Tim was really insightful and treated us like equals, making us feel comfortable and relaxed. During the camp we learnt about plants and their uses in medicine - bandages, antiseptic, natural pain relief, and also how nature can be used to make art-dye, ochre painting, etc. We went on multiple bush walks, strengthening our bond to the land by learning how to respect mother earth. Whilst learning about culture, we also got to see ancient carvings and paintings, dating back to 12,000 years ago! Tim taught us how to relax and meditate, needing nothing more then nature and our surrounds”.
By Jack Lawrence
“During the Girri Girra Camp, we explored what being Aboriginal would have been like 10's of thousands of years ago through discovering and identifying historical sites. Tim also introduced us to the unique religious practices of Aboriginal Australia as well as the customs that the Aboriginal people have among countries. Things such as introductory ceremonies and names were told to us as well as the deity's that they worship and confide in. This camp gave us a closer connection with nature and helped us experience things that they would have not prior to the camp.”

Year 12 Engineering Studies RAAF Williamtown Excursion
RAAF Williamtown – Aviation Heritage Centre
Written by William Shaddock, College Captain
As we neared the vast, hangar-like structure of Fighter World in Williamtown, our hearts fluttered with anticipatory excitement. The opportunity to immerse ourselves in a comprehensive collection of significant fighter aircraft was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Upon our arrival, a friendly staff member provided us with a map and guided us through the layout. The museum was expertly organized into different sections, facilitating easy navigation through the rich array of exhibits. We could choose to initiate our exploration with the birth of flight or dive directly into the realm of modern, high-tech jets.
Opting to follow the chronological timeline, we first found ourselves captivated by the WWII aircraft. The Spitfire Mk VIII stood as a tangible testament to the engineering marvels of its era, evoking vivid images of intense aerial battles.
Moving further into the display, we encountered jet fighters from the Korean and Vietnam War periods. The Dassault Mirage III stood like a silent sentinel, reminding us of countless stories of bravery and sacrifice. We spent considerable time here, reading the informative placards packed with technical specifications and historical details.
We also got to see an F/A-18 Hornet, a truly remarkable machine, embodying the epitome of modern aviation technology. As a staple of the Royal Australian Air Force, it combines both fighter and attack aircraft capabilities, showcasing versatility and power.
The highlight of our visit, however, was the chance to sit inside the cockpit of the Dassault Mirage III. Surrounded by an intricate array of buttons, dials, and gauges, the experience was both humbling and awe-inspiring, offering us a glimpse into the complexity of these powerful machines.
Fighter World also features an outdoor observation deck from where we could watch the active runway of RAAF Base Williamtown. We were fortunate enough to witness a pair of F-35s blasting off into the sky – the raw power and resonating roar of the engines created a sight and sound we will long remember.
As we departed from Fighter World, we carried with us a profound sense of respect for the individuals who command these amazing machines. Our visit was not just an exploration of military aviation history but also a tribute to the courage and commitment of those who serve in the skies. We were left yearning for more time to fully immerse ourselves in everything the museum had to offer. Overall, the informative and exhilarating experience at Fighter World is something we enthusiastically recommend to anyone interested in military aviation or aeronautical engineering.

Brilliance in Performing Arts
Last week was a huge week in performance for several of our creative musicians and actors.
YIPA (Youth in Performing Arts) a showcase of excellence in Performing Arts which runs at Laycock St Theatre, saw many of our students on the stage over four nights including some of our amazing behind the scenes Year 12 Vet Entertainment students who crewed each night.
Congratulations to Taylin Burgess of Year 12 Music, Lachlan Herd of Year 10 Drama who performed his own monologue and James Nilsson of Year 12 Music. All three boys took to the stage as solo performers displaying incredible composure. The Year 11 band headed by Leon Towel and consisting of Sasha Byrne, Matthew Frost Foster, Domenic Fatone, Kai Maitland and Charlie Jacobsen with back up vocals from Olivia and Charlotte Year 11 St Joseph's continued to energise the theatre with their upbeat reprise of Viva la Vida.
In other exciting news Year 12 music student Kalen Hogan launched his debut album “Isolation”.
Whilst Kalen is inspired by 1990's grunge bands including Nirvana, he considers himself as an alternative indie rock singer/songwriter. Kalen's thoughtful observations on life's complexities are interwoven into his music. You can listen to Kalen's music on Spotify.
Well done to all performers.

Model United Nations Assembly
This term two teams represented St Edward’s at the Central Coast Model United Nations Assembly.
Our senior and junior teams did a fantastic job debating current global issues as delegates for the countries Sri Lanka and Argentina. It was a great day where the boys could develop their understanding of the vital role of the United Nations and build on their speaking skills. Congratulations to both teams for speaking with confidence and demonstrating their extensive knowledge of each of the resolutions. Our senior team, Ken Fonseka, Alex Lara, and Ben Stansfield representing Sri Lanka were one of the strongest teams we have seen representing the school and a special mention to Alex Lara for his fantastic right of reply when closing out one of the resolutions. Our junior team were also strong contenders and came away with the prize for best dressed. Well done boys!

Under 13’s Rugby League
The Under 13's Rugby League Gala Day at Erina Oval, held on Wednesday, 25 May, marked the commencement of the league competition for the Year 7 boys representing the “black and red” of Eddie's.
The event showcased the determination and sportsmanship of the teams, with the Red team demonstrating exceptional fighting spirit, while the Black team excelled with their teamwork and competitive drive.
Despite not progressing beyond the pool games, the Red team displayed unwavering spirit in each of their matches. Their commitment to the game was commendable, as they played with remarkable camaraderie, supporting and respecting their teammates and opposition throughout the day. The Red team's performance showcased their resilience and determination to give their best on the field, regardless of the outcome.
The Black team emerged as the standout performers of the gala day, triumphing in all their pool games and securing a dominant victory in the semi-final against Wadalba High. Notably, the Black team achieved an impressive feat by not allowing any points to be scored against them throughout the day. Their success can be attributed to their exceptional teamwork and their collective desire to improve as individual players. The Black team's outstanding performance has earned them a place in the Central Coast Finals scheduled for late June.
The success of both teams at the Under 13 Rugby League Gala Day would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the "Dream Team" support staff, consisting of Year 12 students Sean Bullen, Cooper McBride, and Malachi Smith. As players in the Schools Open League Team, Sean, Cooper and Malachi, in a special touch, presented the boys with their jerseys at the beginning of the day. Their encouragement and assistance throughout the day significantly contributed to the boys' performance.
It was a pleasure watching the boys represent the College on the rugby league field for the first time in the “Black and Red”.
Further information about the upcoming final will be shared with the boys closer to the event taking place.

Parenting Tips
As your kids navigate being teenagers, setting boundaries gets trickier.
Parenting teens means finding the right balance: enough guidance and rules for healthy choices, while allowing them to explore and trust their own judgement.
Trusting your child is a powerful motivator for them to prove themselves.
Mistakes are part of learning, so sometimes you'll need to step in for their safety. They should know you're there to support them, even as they take the reins.
Every teen is different—some need more independence, others need more guidance. You'll know how ready they are to make decisions and how much support they require.
So, strike that balance, trust them, and let them shine!
Top Tips
Praise their efforts. When your teenager displays good self-management skills let them know you have noticed and are proud of them.
Be clear and consistent. Teenagers gain strength and self-respect from parents who are clear and consistent in their expectations and willing to discuss reasons for their decision.
Step in if you need to. You can show respect for your teenager’s feelings and opinions but should reserve the right to limit some of their actions if you feel they may be at risk.
