Year 11 Retreat
The Year 11 Street Retreat provided our students with a firsthand look at the harsh realities faced by Sydney's homeless population.
Over the course of three days, they encountered aspects of life that were previously unfamiliar to them, gaining valuable insights into the challenges of homelessness.
The students visited various significant sites, including The Wayside Chapel, The Jewish Holocaust Museum, Baptist Care, Australian Catholic Mission, St Canice Catholic Church, Oasis (Salvation Army), St Mary’s Cathedral, and multiple outreach centers around the iconic Kings Cross area. They also explored the Needle Exchange and Matthew Talbot Hostel, observing and learning about the stark contrasts between wealth and poverty on the streets of Darlinghurst.
Representatives from Youth of The Streets and L’Arche shared information about the impactful work their organizations do. The St Edward’s community hopes that the lessons learned during these days will leave a lasting impression on the students, inspiring a lifelong commitment to outreach and service to others.

Founder’s Day 2024
This year marks 222 years since Edmund Rice's remarkable legacy began, and we are excited to celebrate Founder’s Day at St Edward’s College on Friday September 6 (Week 7).
The day will start with a morning Liturgy and Assembly, followed by a series of fun activities designed to bring our community together.
Founder’s Day is our biannual tradition to honour the vision and dedication of our College's founder, Edmund Rice. It is a time to strengthen our community bonds and reaffirm our commitment to serving others. Edmund Rice's life serves as an inspiration, reminding us to stand with the disadvantaged, prioritise others, and strive to be kind and compassionate individuals. His example encourages us to promote dignity and respect for all.
Every two years, the College holds a Founder’s Day Celebration, combining fun and fundraising to support Edmund Rice communities in need and to support the education of Frederick Were in Kenya. We kindly request each family to contribute $20 towards this cause. Contributions should be made at the College front office before the beginning of September.
In preparation for the day, homerooms will develop various activities for students to enjoy on Founder’s Day. These activities aim to foster positive relationships and build College spirit. Students are encouraged to volunteer and assist their homeroom teachers in running these activities, which will also allow them to earn Waterford Hours by giving back to the College community. Some of the exciting activities planned include:
Fishing Rod Casting Competition
Dodgeball Competition
Meditation and Mindfulness Sessions
‘Bubble Soccer’
Mario Kart Competition in the Theatre
Additionally, there will be inflatable obstacle courses and a Water Tank Machine where students can dunk their favourite teachers.
A BBQ lunch will be provided, but please inform us of any dietary requirements in advance. As there will be limited food stalls this year, we ask that students bring some food from home.
For any questions or further information, please contact Alexander Rozario – Leader of Justice, Peace and Advocacy arozario@stedwards.nsw.edu.au.

Student Led Learning Conferences – Years 7 to 12
During Term 3 parents/carers, teachers and students will have two opportunities to meet online and reflect on the learning that has taken place this year to date.
The dates and details for Student Led Conferences will be:
Thursday 25 July (Week 1) from 4.00 pm to 7.30 pm
Thursday 1 August (Week 2) from 4.00 pm to 7.30 pm
These conferences will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Teachers will call the students on their Microsoft Teams account at the scheduled booking time to make contact – students must ensure they are logged in to Microsoft Teams using their St Edward's College email. It is preferable that students use their school laptop for this. Microsoft Teams meetings will not be recorded by teaching staff and we request that parents and students not record meetings either.
All conferences are intended to support your child in developing a greater sense of responsibility for their learning. It will be compulsory for students to attend all scheduled meetings with their parents/carers. Students will be expected to take an active role in leading their parents/carers and teachers through a reflection on their learning in that subject. There will be an expectation that students complete a reflection on their progress for each subject prior to the meeting. The student, parents/carers and teachers will then reflect on and evaluate the learning goals set and discuss strategies to address areas of challenge and achieve learning growth throughout Semester Two.
The Student Led Conference bookings are managed with an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). The steps to access PTO are available below – once completed, you will receive an email from PTO allowing you to book interviews with your son’s teachers that you wish to see. Please note that bookings are limited. All interviews will be of seven minutes duration.
Access to PTO will be available from Wednesday 3 July at 7:00 pm and will be closed off for bookings two days before interviews.
If you encounter any problems using PTO, please contact the school office on 4321 6400.
Please follow these steps to access the system:
Click here go to the PTO website
Click on “Obtain PIN/Password” (you will need to supply your email address)
Enter your email address and click on “Send Email”
Check your email in-box for your login details or click on the link in the email
Go back to the PTO website, login with the details supplied via email
Follow the online instructions to complete the bookings.
Please note that in Step 1 of the booking process you will need to select the start date and time by scrolling through the drop-down menu until you reach your desired start time.

Academic Assembly Semester 1
We congratulate all students who received awards at the Semester 1 Academic Assembly during Week 1. This year, we introduced a new format for our Awards categories, aligning them more closely with our College Values and Code for Learning.
Our updated award categories are designed to reflect our College Aspiration Statement, which encourages students to embody respect, autonomy, and resilience. These traits are essential for personal growth and lifelong learning, and we believe that recognizing them through our awards program reinforces their importance.
The Learner Profile, a key component of our academic environment, has been integrated into our classroom practices and is pivotal in helping students understand our expectations for their learning journey. The Profile, together with the College Values, guides students in developing contemporary learning dispositions necessary for success both in and out of the classroom.
This year’s Academic Achievement Award recognizes the top 3% of students in each course based on their cumulative assessment marks for Terms 1 and 2. This accolade celebrates those who have excelled academically and demonstrated exceptional commitment to their studies.
We are immensely proud of all our students and their achievements. Their dedication and hard work reflect the values we cherish and strive to instill in every learner. Congratulations once again to all our award recipients listed below

The Latest from the Performing Arts Faculty
As we welcome the boys back for what promises to be a busy and creative second semester in the Performing Arts Faculty, we reflect on the learning, achievements, and experiences of Term 2, 2024.
Music
Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed developing their performance and composition skills. Over several weeks, they completed a formative assessment task, during which they selected an instrument and chose a level of repertoire. It was great to see the boys' skills develop and witness them challenging themselves in repertoire choices.
Year 9 and 10 students dived into an exciting exploration of various music genres, discovering their unique characteristics and mastering the art of performing in small ensembles, all while honing their technical skills. There have been some very impressive performers emerging within this cohort and we look forward to their increasing participation in showcase events.
Year 11 students, immersed in their Australian Music study, delved into the world of composition, with some very creative and polished pieces being produced. Meanwhile, Year 12 students have been diligently refining their performance pieces and elective selections, including HSC Composition and Viva Voce. This talented group will sit for their Trials in Weeks 3 and 4 before completing their practical HSC exam later in the term.
Drama
Our Year 9 and Year 10 Drama students finished off Term 2 with some outstanding assessment based group performances, re-imagining a scene from Romeo and Juliet, their studied text. The attention to detail, creativity and skills on display were excellent.
For five weeks of Term 2 we were delighted to run “Whose Line is it Anyway” introducing Year 8 students into a sample of improvisation activities and confidence building skills. The boys who elected to take part in this program worked with enthusiasm and creativity each week developing important collaborative, decision making and communication skills.
In Week 5 of this term Drama students will take part in workshops run by Belvoir St Theatre in our College Theatre. Year 9 and 10 students will be immersed in “Performing a Monologue”, developing their understanding and skills in this crucial area of Performance. Year 8 Students will build on their improvisational techniques and learn a little more about the Drama Course in Stage 5.
VET Entertainment/Screen and Media
Screen and Media students have been busy polishing their Breakfast Interview show and the boys did a great job videoing footage from the Athletics Carnival that was used in the Assembly package shown to the school in Week 9.
Year 11 Entertainment spent much of Term 2 learning about audio live mixing, completing a radio show competency task that will be a very useful reference point for when they go to work placement at the beginning of Term 4 and getting ready for work placement next term at The Skilled Creative.
Year 12 Entertainment are finalising their Specialisation Unit including an Industry Visit from Dan McIvor of Central Coast Youth Services which will take place on Friday 2 August. This visit will be covering Industry contacts and building a career in the Entertainment Industry.
[foogallery id="54531"]
Experiences and Achievements
Term 2 saw some outstanding performers showcased in the Youth in Performing Arts series of concerts at Laycock St Theatre. All up St Edward's students performed in five items, with a total of 11 students, additionally, four of our Year 11 Entertainment students worked as part of the stage crew. Our students were celebrated in the Week 9 whole school assembly and a special mention goes to Thomas Schramm for being awarded the Coast Academy of Music Scholarship and Lachlan Herd for an Encouragement Award for technical crew.
More recently student musicians enhanced the Academic Award ceremony with some beautiful repertoire. Max Taylor in Year 9 and Logan Atherton in Year 8 performed an instrumental duo, whilst Vice Captain, Rex Allwood, presented one of his HSC vocal pieces.
Music Enrichment Day
On Tuesday 4 June, the Music department, along with mentor students from St Edward's and St Jospeh’s, played host to 21 primary school students from our feeder schools. These Year 4 and 5 students participated in an enrichment program that included, a vocal workshop, digital music making and a concert band experience. The day culminated in a joyous performance of Three Little Birds to a very proud group of parents. A big congratulations must go to our Year 9 student helpers who, along with St Joseph’s girls, were fantastic ambassadors and mentors for our schools.
Theatre Visit “& Juliet “
In Week 8, Term 2 our Stage 5 Drama students and Stage 6 VET Entertainment students were treated to a fantastic theatrical experience at the Lyric Theatre in the form of the highly successful Musical production “& Juliet”. For Drama students it was a wonderful opportunity to be exposed to a live theatrical production encompassing all the Elements of Drama. This musical tied in perfectly with the boys' study of Romeo and Juliet in a theatrical context. For Entertainment students, this was an exceptional look at staging elements including, projection mapping and vision systems, fly systems, stage revolves and lifts, exquisite scenic elements and creative scene changes.
HSC Music Performance Evening
In Week 7 our wonderful Year 12 Music students will perform a selection of their HSC repertoire to their family and friends in the Theatre. This is a special night where the boys get to celebrate their hard work and musicality to an appreciative audience just a few weeks before their actual HSC practical exam takes place.
Year 8 Concert
Following on from the Year 12 Music night, a selection of their pieces and repertoire from our Year 9-11 students will be performed in a special concert for Year 8. This concert is an excellent opportunity for Year 8 students to see first-hand the development of Music skills which takes place in elective music and for our elective Music students to perform to a large appreciative cohort.

Under 14’s Rugby League
The Under 14’s Rugby League team travelled to Coffs Harbour to play in the Northern Division finals of the Cochran Cup.
With a lot of adrenaline and excitement for the tournament ahead, the team were confident of putting in a good performance on the day. With a late withdrawal from the pool stages, the boys were then given a late start to the 2-game event. First up was St Joseph’s College, Port Macquarie. The boys started the game strongly with a cross-field kick which was pounced on by Rasmus Borg in the corner, inside the opening minute of the match. Leading 4-nil, spirits were high. Unfortunately, St Joseph's made the most of some costly errors inside our half and went on to dominate the rest of the match with the momentum they built.
Some soul-searching was needed to pick up the spirits for the next game against St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead. Sporting a fast and athletic team, St Mary’s dominated for most of the game but not without some inspired performances from some of our players. Cooper Djuricin led from the front with some big collisions from kick-offs, Sunny Straker looked dangerous out wide and Duke Russell was always busy playing every minute of each game during the hot day.
Finishing off the day with 2 losses was a disappointing way to end our campaign for 2024, but the boys learned some tough lessons against quality competition that can only serve them better in the future.
Thank you to Mr Lynch for training the team most weeks throughout Terms 1 and 2, and to Mr Carpenter for the organising team meals and accommodation as well as driving the team bus on the long 6-hour drive to Coffs Harbour.

SRS application and offer dates
Application deadline:16 September
Student ratings deadline (in School Access):29 September
Course preference deadline:1 November
First offers released: 8 November (November Round 1)

Navigating offers and preferences
In November Round 1, students can receive one unconditional offer and multiple conditional offers. To convert a conditional offer to an unconditional one, students must keep the course in their UAC preference list and meet the institution's specified criteria.
Students should always prioritise their dream course. In December Round 2, they won’t be penalised for ranking their dream course above a course for which they've received a conditional offer, even if an institution instructs them to list the conditional course as their 'highest eligible preference'.
If they miss out on their dream course, their next choice will be considered, and so on. Their conditional offer will be considered after the courses listed above it have been considered. If the conditional course is listed as their top choice, and they’ve met the conditions, they will receive the offer and not be considered for courses listed below it.
