Year 9 Commerce Excursion
07.06.24
As part of the Commerce curriculum, Year 9 students explored the topic of Running a Business. To gain firsthand insight into business operations, advertising and sales strategies, an excursion to Erina Fair Shopping Centre was organised.

In this unit, students examined how entrepreneurial attributes and dispositions contribute to business success and the considerations involved in planning and running a business. The boys investigated key issues and processes related to various aspects of business operations. For their assessment task, students developed a business plan, and the excursion provided an opportunity to observe the success and strategies of various businesses at Erina Fair.

The excursion offered students two key experiences. First, they observed businesses in action within Erina Fair Shopping Centre, which houses various types of businesses that sell and promote a wide range of products and services, fostering competition. Students took notes on consumer behaviour, store layout, location, and advertising methods while exploring the centre.

As part of our practical learning experience, each student received a $5 loan from the College to purchase an item with the objective of reselling it for a profit. This will take place during Term 3 Founder’s Day celebrations. Students must identify their target market, understand their wants and needs, and determine whether the product will still be in demand three months from now. The profit generated from these sales will be used to buy underwear for women living in the slums of Kenya. At the end of Term 3, Mr Bonnici and some of our Year 11 students will personally deliver these items to the Mission making a direct and meaningful impact on these women’s lives.

Thank you to the Year 9 students for representing the College so well during their time at Erina Fair. Thank you to Miss Hillard and Ms Celebrin for organising the event. Thank you to Mr Millar for accompanying both classes and sharing his extensive legal, business, and retail knowledge with the boys. Lastly, a special thank you to Mr Speziale for taking time out of his schedule to drive the bus and transport the boys to and from Erina. Your contributions made this an enriching experience for everyone involved.
