Year 7 PDHPE: Embracing Challenges and Learning New Skills
This term, Year 7 students have embarked on an exciting and empowering journey as they start with a unit designed to help them navigate challenges and changes in their lives. The unit focuses on building resilience and providing strategies for coping with various challenges, from starting high school to adjusting to the changes that come with puberty. As part of the unit, students are tasked with creating a “How to…” guide for their peers. This guide will offer practical advice on how to handle different aspects of these transitions.
In addition, the Balance and Bounce unit offers a fun and physical challenge. Year 7 students are learning various gymnastics skills that involve tumbling, balancing, springing and landing. These activities help to improve strength, flexibility and coordination while encouraging teamwork and perseverance.

Year 8 PDHPE
Students are having a blast learning European Handball, a fast-paced sport that is less commonly played in Australia. Throughout the unit, students are developing their skills and understanding the rules of the game, with assessments focused on their performance and knowledge. In addition to the sport, students are also exploring the important topic of making good choices when it comes to risk-taking, learning how to assess situations and make safe, responsible decisions.
Year 9 PDHPE
Students are currently enjoying an exciting gymnastics unit focused on springing, landing, and vaulting, where they are mastering these dynamic skills while building strength and coordination. Alongside their physical activities, students are also taking a closer look at their own diets and exercise routines, analysing how their current habits support or hinder their overall health and fitness goals. Mrs Dignam will wrap up the term with her Careers lessons aimed at building a portfolio for potential job interviews.
Year 9 PASS
Students are diving into an insightful study of the role sport plays in shaping Australia’s identity and reputation. They are investigating the various factors that influence Australia’s sporting identity and examining how these factors impact athletes, spectators, and the nation’s image on the world stage. The unit encourages students to explore both current and future perspectives on Australian sport and how these could affect the nation’s sporting identity moving forward. As part of the unit, the boys were tasked with writing a persuasive speech, advocating for why an individual should be awarded Australian of the Year, linking sport’s influence on national pride and achievement.
Year 10 PDHPE
Students are getting hands-on experience with the components of fitness through practical applications. As part of their learning, they are researching various fitness tests that assess health-related components like cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. After gaining a thorough understanding of the tests, students will demonstrate and administer them to their peers, helping to analyse and interpret the results. This practical approach not only deepens their understanding of fitness but also enhances their ability to apply this knowledge in real-world settings.
Year 10 PASS
Students have been exploring the complex issues surrounding sport, with a particular focus on the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong, who was banned for life after being found guilty of performance-enhancing drugs and blood doping. This case sparked deep discussions about drugs, ethics and integrity in sport. Students then had the opportunity to research other issues that piqued their interest, ranging from spectator violence to gender equality in sports, and shared their findings with the class through engaging audio-visual presentations.
Year 11 Outdoor Recreation
Students are enjoying an adventurous and rewarding term full of exciting outdoor experiences. After a successful Work Placement at the Year 7 Camp at Crosslands, Galston Gorge, they are gearing up for their next placement at the Year 9 Camp at Wee Jasper, where they will assist, mentor, and encourage the students, as well as set up tents and try their hand at caving. Under the guidance of Mr Gentle, Year 11 students have proven to be excellent role models, and their help was greatly appreciated by staff. They are also taking advantage of the stunning local environment with a one-day paddle in Brisbane Water. Looking ahead, they are planning a 4-day camp at The Basin, Pittwater, where they will experience surfing, kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking, continuing to develop their outdoor skills while making the most of their beautiful surroundings.

Year 11 Health and Movement Science
Students in the new Health and Movement Science course are diving into hands-on, practical learning with great enthusiasm. They’ve been busy in the lab, engaging in activities such as chicken wing and heart dissections, where they explore the inner workings of the human body. Students are also creating a robotic hand and participating in practical activities that bring biomechanical principles to life. Mrs Henderson is thrilled with the students’ excitement and passion for the subject, and their energy is making the course both fun and insightful.
Year 11 Sports Lifestyle and Recreation
Students had the exciting opportunity to team up with 13 St Joseph’s College girls this year. As part of their coaching unit, students are gaining valuable insight into the challenges teachers face with classroom management and skill delivery. They are exploring key coaching concepts, such as the roles and responsibilities of a coach, conducting a coaching session, understanding psychology in coaching, and evaluating a coaching program. Later this term they will enhance their skills in Track and Field events learning the finer details of safety and technique.
Year 12 PDHPE
Students have been hard at work, focusing on extended responses for various assessment questions related to factors that affect performance. This rigorous preparation is helping them refine their knowledge and analytical skills. In addition, they will be honing their exam techniques by sitting for their mid-course exam, giving them valuable practice ahead of their final assessments.
Year 12 Sports Lifestyle and Recreation
Students have been fully immersed in a hands-on practical unit of resistance training, applying their classroom knowledge to real-life exercises. They are also working on a movement laboratory, where they analyse physiological data to better understand how the body responds to various types of physical activity. This practical approach gives students a deeper understanding of the principles behind resistance training and how the body adapts, making their learning both engaging and informative.
