Solidarity Week 2025: Embracing Neurodiversity
At the heart of our Justice, Peace, and Advocacy values is the call to recognise the dignity of every person and ensure that all members of our community feel respected, valued, and included. As a Catholic school, we are reminded of Jesus’ example of radical inclusion—welcoming those who were misunderstood, marginalised, and often overlooked by society. This year’s Solidarity Week focused on embracing neurodiversity, guided by the theme:
“Solidarity with Neurodivergent People: Embracing Diversity, Championing Inclusion.”
What is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity is the recognition that everyone’s brain is unique and that neurological differences—such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive variations—are natural and valuable parts of human diversity. Just as we celebrate different cultures, backgrounds, and abilities, we also celebrate the different ways people think, learn, and experience the world.

A Week of Learning, Reflection, and Inclusion
Throughout Solidarity Week, students engaged in a range of activities, reflections, and initiatives to deepen their understanding of neurodiversity and how they can contribute to a more inclusive community. Some of the highlights included:
Assembly Presentation: The week was concluded with an assembly deepening student understanding of the theme, exploring what neurodiversity means, and how we can be allies to neurodivergent people in our school and beyond.
Interactive RE Lesson: Students participated in a stand-alone Religious Education lesson, linking the Catholic values of compassion, dignity, and justice to how we support neurodivergent individuals in our communities.
Daily Notices and Reflections: Each day, students were challenged to reflect on different aspects of neurodiversity, engage in small acts of inclusion, and break down common stereotypes about neurodivergent people.
Neurodiversity Superpower Posters: Students creatively expressed their learning by designing posters that highlighted the strengths and unique abilities of neurodivergent people—showing that differences are not deficits but superpowers.
Neurodivergent Role Model Posters: Around the school, posters showcased famous neurodivergent individuals from various fields, from science and technology to art and activism, emphasizing the impact neurodivergent thinkers have had on the world.
Reflections from Staff and Students
“Prior to our lessons detailing Neurodiversity, I had a shuttered view of the different kinds and aspects of Neurodiversity, only perceiving a few conditions to fit this category, such as ADHD and autism. I now understand that there is an extensive list of different conditions, and how it is quite likely for a person to be neurodivergent in some form. I learned how the actions of people on the autism spectrum that we may see as strange are just methods of regulating their emotions and calming themselves down. I also learned about the ability of some neurodivergent people to hyper-focus on a specific task and achieve incredible feats. My knowledge and thoughts on the neurodivergent community have changed greatly, and I now understand that some may just need a little assistance and a push in the right direction.” – Student Reflection during one of the in-class activities.
“I am so proud of the whole school approach of creating an inclusive community for our neurodivergent students…..Thank you all for being a part of making Eddies a beautiful and inclusive school for our students. But more than that, investing time into something that is important to raise awareness and educate to make the world a better place.” – Staff reflection
Living Out Our Call to Inclusion
Solidarity Week served as a powerful reminder that inclusion isn’t just a concept—it’s a daily commitment. As a Catholic school, we are called to create spaces where every person is seen, heard, and supported. Embracing neurodiversity means celebrating differences, challenging barriers, and ensuring that every student feels valued for who they are.
Through ongoing education, advocacy, and acts of kindness, we continue to build a community where Justice, Peace, and Advocacy are not just ideals—but lived realities.

Walking Songlines: A Journey of Learning and Connection
Over the past seven weeks, students from Years 7 to 11 have taken part in the Walking Songlines Aboriginal Immersion, an incredible opportunity to learn about Aboriginal culture, connection to Country, and traditional knowledge. Unlike previous programs, which were separated by year groups, this term’s immersion welcomed students from across all year levels, creating a unique learning environment where older and younger students could share experiences and insights together.
The majority of this term’s journey has been spent out at Girri Girra Bush School (Peats Ridge), where students had the privilege of learning from Uncle Tim Selwyn. Here, they engaged in hands-on cultural practices, including the traditional crafting of artifacts such as clap sticks and digging sticks. More than just a practical skill, students were taught to acknowledge the spirit within the wood, showing deep respect for the materials provided by the land and understanding the significance of different artifacts for different uses.
Beyond craftsmanship, the program immersed students in the core values of respect, responsibility, and connection to Country. Uncle Tim shared teachings on why certain artifacts are used for specific purposes, the importance of honouring traditions, and how to engage with the land in a way that respects its spirit and history. Students also gained a deeper appreciation for truth-telling, Aboriginal history, and the continued significance of cultural practices today.
The Walking Songlines program is more than just a learning experience—it is an opportunity to walk alongside Aboriginal knowledge holders, engage with living culture, and develop a greater respect for the land and its stories. By stepping away from the classroom and learning on Country, students have gained a deeper sense of belonging, appreciation for Aboriginal traditions, and a commitment to being responsible custodians of the land.
We are incredibly proud of all students who participated in this term’s program, and we encourage others to take up the opportunity in the future. This journey is one of learning, growth, and connection—a path well worth walking.
Reflections
“It was such a fantastic experience out at Tim’s camp with the boys. Their behaviour, engagement, and knowledge were truly impressive…... It was an incredibly valuable and enjoyable experience.” Ms McCauley
“The Walking Songlines program was a great opportunity to connect with the original culture of the land. It was really eye opening to see how the people before us used the land and their deep knowledge and connection to the land and sea. I personally enjoyed learning about the different cultural artifacts they used like clap sticks and the many uses of different tools. The program was helpful because it gave me a different perspective on the land which I live on and how I can care for it and look after it to preserve it for generations to come.” Student Reflection

Waterford Working Bee: Students Giving Back to the Community
As part of our Waterford Service Learning Program, a dedicated group of ten students recently took part in a Working Bee at the Terrigal 50+ Leisure and Learning Centre. With an important community event approaching for them, our students volunteered their time to help clean and rejuvenate the centre’s gardens, ensuring the space was inviting and well-maintained for the many visitors who use it.
Throughout the day, students worked hard to weed garden beds, prune overgrown plants, clear pathways, and tidy outdoor areas, transforming the space into a more welcoming environment.
The Terrigal 50+ Leisure and Learning Centre is an important hub for members of our community, providing a space for social activities, learning opportunities, and wellbeing programs. By lending a helping hand, our students not only beautified the centre but also fostered a stronger connection between our College and the local community.
This experience highlighted the true spirit of the Waterford Service Learning Program—giving back, showing initiative, and making a positive impact. Through hands-on service, students develop an appreciation for the needs of others and the importance of active citizenship.
A huge congratulations to all students involved in the Working Bee for their hard work, teamwork, and commitment to serving others, and a thank you to Mr Summerhayes who also attended and provided much needed gardening equipment. Their efforts are a shining example of how small acts of service can create lasting benefits for the wider community.
We look forward to more opportunities for our students to engage in meaningful service projects throughout the year!

Maths Week 2025
Earlier this term we celebrated Maths Week at St Edward’s College.
Maths Week took place during Week 5 of this term. Throughout the week, we featured daily problems in the daily notices. Many students attempted these problems, and the student who submitted the correct solution first was declared the daily winner. Congratulations to the following students, who were crowned the daily winners:
Monday- Cormac Brady (Year 10)
Tuesday- Archie Gould (Year 7)
Wednesday- Isaac McCudden (Year 11)
Thursday- Jonathan Lin and Zane Everson (Year 11)
Additionally, each day featured math-based activities during lunchtime. On Monday, we played mathematics-themed bingo; on Tuesday, we took the human pi photo; Wednesday was filled with speed chess; and on Thursday, we enjoyed a game of Blackjack. The winners of each activity were also awarded prizes. Congratulations to the following winners:
Luke Ritcher (Year 8) Bingo
Harry Evans (Year 10) Bingo
Kayn O’Connor Stewart (Year 11) Blackjack
Ryder Bourke (Year 8) Blackjack
Toby Pranzo-Fernandez (Year 8) Chess Winner
Taj Probert (Year 11) Chess Runner Up
Finally, Maths Week concluded with the Friday morning assembly, where we held our annual Pi Challenge. The rules for the Pi Challenge are simple: we gather our finalists, and the first student begins by stating the first digit of pi. Each student then takes turns announcing the next digit, passing the microphone along after their turn. If a student states an incorrect digit, they are eliminated, and the challenge continues until only one student remains. It took several digits of pi to determine the 2025 Pi Challenge champion. It is with great pleasure that I announce the following winner and place getters:
Zane Everson (Year 11) First Place
Tristan Pearce- Maitland (Year 11) Second Place
Oliver Black (Year 7) Third Place.
Overall, it was great to see so many students enjoying mathematics. Looking forward to next year.
Mr Tim Woodbine
Leader of Mathematics

Celebrating Our First Aboriginal Studies Class
This year marks an exciting milestone for our College as we introduce Aboriginal Studies as a Year 9 elective subject for the first time. Throughout Term 1, students have been engaging deeply with the unit ‘Aboriginal Identities’, exploring the diverse and dynamic ways identity is shaped within Aboriginal communities.
From the outset, students have examined the vast diversity of Aboriginal nations and language groups across Australia, gaining an understanding of the deep cultural connections that exist within each. They have also explored how Aboriginal identities have evolved over time in response to historical and contemporary influences.
A highlight of the term has been the students’ exploration of the role story, song, dance, and art play in shaping Aboriginal identity. Through creative activities, they have expressed their learning by creating language posters and reflecting on the significance of Indigenous languages in shaping culture and belonging.
Importantly, students have also had the opportunity to connect to Country right here at our College. Spending time in our Yarning Circle, they have deepened their understanding of the importance of place in Aboriginal culture and identity. This connection to Country was further enriched by the introduction of Yidaki (Didgeridoo) playing, an incredible experience made possible with guidance and permission from members of the local Aboriginal community.
We are proud of our students for embracing this learning with respect and enthusiasm. Aboriginal Studies is not just about history—it is about understanding the living cultures of First Nations peoples and their continued strength, resilience, and identity. We look forward to seeing where this journey takes our students in the coming terms!

Open’s Touch Football
The Open Touch Football Team travelled to Nolan’s Reserve, Manly to contest the Broken Bay (CSBB) Touch Football Championships on Tuesday 18 March.
Our team consisted of: Caleb Peterson, Will McClelland, Kobi Straker, Kye McIntosh, Nixon Lavin, Xavier McNeill, Coby Neilly, Aden Tillott, Cooper Jones, Lachlan Roach, Kyan Werner, Ben Geddes-Brown and Rourke Yarnold.
In what is now becoming the ‘norm’ at these Gala Days with seven boy’s schools in Broken Bay, all teams play each other over the day in a gruelling format. The event involved a game on, game off draw that overlapped with the Open's Girls.
The team brushed off the cobwebs with an easy 8-2 win over St Leo’s Catholic College to get the day started. We then faced St Paul’s Catholic College and while we were never troubled, it wasn’t pretty, winning 3-1. The tough draw saw one team each round play a back-to-back game and we came up against Mater Maria Catholic College straight after the St Paul’s game. Mater had the benefit of a last round bye and skipped to an early 4-0 lead. We eventually found our feet, but it was too little, too late going down 5-3.
A well-deserved bye, saw us finish off our games with wins against St Brigid’s Catholic College 8-1, St Peter’s Catholic College 5-0, and MacKillop Catholic College 6-2. The results saw us finish second overall to Mater Maria Catholic College, who finished one point in front of us after drawing with MacKillop. A great result overall for the boys.
The day also doubled as a selection trial for the Broken Bay team. Kye, Xavier, Coby, Aden, Lachlan, Kyan, Ben and Rourke all back up after the six round games to play a Possible v Probable’s game. Some tired boys boarded the bus for the trip home. The following day we were notified that Xavier, Lachlan, Ben, Kyan and Kye had made the Broken Bay team and will now contest the NSWCCC Championships on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 April at CCRSC, Tuggerah. Well Done Boys!
