Christmas Liturgy and Year Group Liturgies
It was great to be able to finish the year with some meaningful prayerful experiences.
The Year Group Liturgies serve as a special opportunity for each year group to come together in a meaningful way, to reflect and offer prayers of gratitude for the year that has been completed. These liturgies are a time for students to express appreciation for their personal growth, achievements, and the experiences shared with their peers throughout the year. As part of the celebration, students prepared a thoughtful presentation of images that beautifully depicted the highlights of their busy and fulfilling year at St Edward's College. The images were a vibrant reflection of their hard work, dedication, and the strong sense of community within the school. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all those who contributed their time, effort, and creativity in making these occasions so memorable and enriching for all involved. Your support and involvement helped to make these liturgies truly special.
[foogallery id="57474"]
The annual Christmas Liturgy is a cherished tradition at St Edward's College, one that brings the entire school community together in a spirit of joy, reflection, and celebration. This special occasion is marked by the communal singing of Christmas carols, with senior students and staff leading the way.
A significant part of the liturgy is the farewell of staff members who are leaving the school, whether retiring or moving on to new opportunities. This moment allows the community to express their gratitude for the contributions these staff members have made to the College.
At the conclusion of the liturgy, we continued the long-standing tradition of presenting Christmas hampers, which are prepared by each homeroom. These hampers, filled with food and essential items, are given to families in need, spreading the spirit of generosity and kindness during the holiday season. This year, the hampers will be donated to Coast Shelter and St Vincent de Paul, and we thank all who contributed.
This annual event is a beautiful reminder of the importance of giving, compassion, and community, and it serves as a meaningful way to celebrate the Christmas season while making a positive impact in the lives of others.

2025 Swimming Carnival
As advertised in the annual calendar, we will be conducting our swimming carnival on Friday 7 February at the Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy.
Information regarding the carnival will be communicated to the boys at the first assembly of the 2025 school year on Monday, Week 2. Below are some important practical details regarding the carnival:
Transport
Normal school buses will run in the morning / afternoon and students will catch a bus from the College to the pool and back again in the afternoon.
Other students may make their own way to the carnival if appropriate. All boys making their own way to the carnival need to be at the pool by 8.45am, unless they are competing in the 200m events (see next point).
Any student competing in 200m races need to be at the pool by 8.30 am at the very latest. Buses will not be at the pool by 8.30 am so these students will need to make their own transport arrangements.
All students requiring afternoon bus transport will return by bus to the College and catch the afternoon school buses under supervision as normal.
Uniform
For identification purposes, it is imperative that all students in Years 7 – 10 attend the carnival in their College sports uniform as they would do on a normal Friday. They can change into their colour house clothes at the pool. Only Years 11 and 12 are allowed to wear mufti/casual clothing.
General Directions
As maximum participation is the aim of the day, points will be allocated for every student entering an event. Any boy who attends the carnival is required to participate by:- Swimming in all events appropriate to his ability level;
- Assisting teaching staff in conducting the carnival in some capacity ie: official duties;
For supervision purposes when boys are not in races, they are to remain in the stands grouped according to their age divisions. Only the Years 10,11 and 12 will be permitted to gather on the grassed area.
Boys need to be equally prepared for cool or warmer weather and bring appropriate sun protection ie sunscreen, as the marshalling area is outdoors.
Limited canteen facilities will be available – boys are encouraged to bring their own food & drink for the day.
It is imperative that students do not bring large sums of money or valuable equipment such as air pods etc. In these situations, it is impossible for the College to take responsibility for items that may go missing.
As the carnival is held indoors, it will be held even in the event of obvious inclement weather.
Boys who live locally or who are being picked up by their parents can leave to go home directly from the pool at the conclusion of the carnival, which should be at 2.15 pm. No boy will be permitted to leave the pool precinct prior to the conclusion of the carnival, as rolls need to be marked and the usual important formalities carried out. I particularly ask that we have parental co-operation in this matter.
Parents, carers and relatives are more than welcome to attend on the day however it is recommended you bring your own chair as seating is at a premium.
The College Prefects and Leaders will be required at the pool early in the day to assist with carnival set up and again at the end of the day to assist with packing up of the carnival.
The co-operation of boys and their families with these guidelines will ensure that it is an enjoyable day for all in attendance

The awards presented were:

Growth Award: This Award celebrates students who have demonstrated improvement in their Learner Profile scores. This award recognises those who are striving to reach their full potential.
School Spirit Award: Recognising students who truly embody the heart and soul of our College. This award does not focus on academic achievement or athletic prowess but a commitment to the core values and community spirit that make our school a special place.
Academic Award: Presented to the top 3% of students in each course, based on their cumulative assessment marks for Terms 3 and 4. Students receiving an academic award have shown remarkable achievement and commitment to their studies.

Football Gala Day with Local Primary Schools
Gameday Fun with St Edward’s Football Academy!
In Week 6, St Edward’s College came alive with energy and excitement as we hosted an epic gala day for local Catholic primary schools, welcoming both girls and boys for a day full of football fun. This special event was organised in collaboration with our Football Academy and also saw the return of our Opens champion football team, who generously came back after their HSC to help out on the day. Their presence and support added to the excitement and provided inspiration for the young athletes participating. The day brought together students, staff, and young athletes from the community for an unforgettable experience.
From thrilling matches that showcased incredible skills and teamwork to fun challenges like the crowd-favourite crossbar challenge and the always-entertaining penalty shootouts, the day was packed with action and laughter. Primary school students had the chance to play alongside and learn from our academy players, fostering a love for the game and creating special memories with their peers.
The event highlighted the values of sportsmanship, community spirit, and collaboration, and we’re already looking forward to hosting the next one. Who’s ready to join in the fun again?

Fun and Teamwork at Year 8 Camp
On Wednesday 23 October, 145 eager Year 8 students stood in the dark on the basketball courts eager to set off on an adventure.
The 6 am departure meant an early start for students, parents and teachers and many boys took the opportunity to make up for the early start with a nap during the 3 hour journey to Shell Cove.
Killalea State Park is located between a river and two beautiful surf beaches and the boys really raised their step count walking to activities including surfing lessons, canoeing, snorkelling and beach sports. Evenings were spent cooking and playing trivia in their camp groups.
Staff were impressed by student’s positive attitude, willingness to give things a go and the way the boys supported each other.
A huge thank you to all of the teachers who gave up their time to make this possible and to the administration staff who worked very hard to ensure we had everything we needed for a terrific camp.

Challenges at Year 10 Camp
On Monday 14 October, Year 10, accompanied by 13 enthusiastic staff members, headed to the Snowy Mountains.
Our first stop was Suttons Forest McDonald’s to fuel up for the exciting week ahead, followed by a stretch break in Cooma, and then we arrived at our base camp, ALI Bungarra in Jindabyne.
Tuesday greeted us with a chilly start, reminding us we were in the snowy mountains. The boys quickly engaged in the activities, which included a raft challenge on Lake Jindabyne, abseiling near the Jindabyne Dam, a hike up Mt Twynam - Australia's third highest mountain at 2,195 meters - and mountain biking. From Tuesday to Thursday evenings, four groups camped overnight in tents in Kosciuszko National Park, either at Island Bend or Thredbo Diggings. Fortunately, the weather was milder on Wednesday and Thursday, perfect for shorts and t-shirts.
Each day, the boys faced physical challenges and rose to the occasion, though a few moans and groans - which goes with teenage territory - could be heard. The food was plentiful, and the boys expressed their gratitude. We witnessed some remarkable individual achievements as students overcame their fears, and many demonstrated incredible perseverance and resilience. As a whole, I couldn't be prouder of the entire cohort. Watching the boys shine outside the classroom and engage with one another in a supportive manner was truly rewarding.
A big thank you to Mrs Kellie Atkinson for her exceptional administrative support and to the wonderful staff who cared for the boys throughout the week: Mrs Henderson, Mr Foster, Mr Isbester, Mr Kane, Mr Le Page, Mr Lynch, Mr Mills, Mr Gentle, Mr Papi, Mr Karakatsanis, Mr Buxton and Mr E Rozario.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly
Year 12 Farewell Assembly: Celebrating Achievements at St Edward’s College.
On Thursday, 26 September, the St Edward’s College community gathered in the ERC for a heartfelt Farewell Assembly to honor the Year 12 graduating class of 2024. Staff, students, and families came together to celebrate not only the culmination of high school but also the remarkable achievements of these young men during their time at the College.
The event was filled with nostalgia and pride as the College community reflected on the academic excellence and resilience displayed by the Year 12 students. Special recognition was given to those who completed external study this year, a testament to their commitment to learning beyond traditional classroom boundaries. External study allows students to engage in independent research, projects, and coursework, fostering self-directed learning and a deeper understanding of their subjects.
Among the graduates, several students received accolades for their accomplishments in vocational education, we also recognised the outstanding academic achievements of students across various subjects with the first and second place recipients.
Towards the end of the assembly the major award recipients were announced including the College Dux. We are proud to announce Christopher Dodd is the 2024 College Dux. A huge congratulations to Christopher and all the Award Recipients.
After receiving a standing ovation from the College community, the College Leaders proceeded to the official tree planting ceremony, a long-standing College tradition, at the lower grounds of the College. This fulfilled their final duty as St Edward's students and marked their induction into the College Old Boys' Union.

Year 12 Graduation Mass
The Year 12 Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Vince Casey was a fitting farewell for our students and their families.
At this Mass one of our students, Abhishek Thomas responded to the Gospel. His response was insightful and exemplified the characteristics that as a staff we aspire to instill in our students after six years at St Edward’s College.
The music provided by the students and our music staff was of the highest quality and provided much joy for those in attendance. During supper, after Mass, a wonderful convivial atmosphere prevailed in the foyer of the ERC as students, parents and the staff mingled. A highlight of the night was the rendition of the College song which will live long in the memory of our graduating class. The parent/staff choir surprised and impressed the congregation by performing two songs as a gift to the students. A big thank you to all those who contributed to this delightful occasion.
All images and videos shown at the mass will be available in the coming weeks via a link sent to email addresses.

Founder’s Day Celebration: A Day of Fun, Unity, and Generosity
We are thrilled to share the success of this year's Founder's Day!
The entire school community came together for a day filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a shared sense of purpose. Students and staff alike enjoyed participating in a variety of activities that made the day truly special.
Some of the standout moments included the ever-popular dunk tank, where brave volunteers took the plunge for a good cause, and the high-energy bubble soccer matches that had everyone on their feet (or off them!). The lolly shop was a sweet treat for all, and the Mario Kart tournament brought out some friendly competition, with cheers echoing throughout the Theatre.
But beyond the fun, Founder's Day was also about giving back. Thanks to the generosity of our College community, we raised a significant amount of money for the organisations and charities we support in Kenya. This incredible effort will make a real difference in the lives of those in need, and we couldn’t be more proud of the contributions made by our students and staff.
Thank you to everyone who participated, and supported this fantastic event, with a massive thank you to the staff for facilitating and supervising the activities. Founder's Day 2024 will be remembered as a day of joy, unity, and meaningful impact. We look forward to making the next one even better!

Academic Assembly Semester 1
We congratulate all students who received awards at the Semester 1 Academic Assembly during Week 1. This year, we introduced a new format for our Awards categories, aligning them more closely with our College Values and Code for Learning.
Our updated award categories are designed to reflect our College Aspiration Statement, which encourages students to embody respect, autonomy, and resilience. These traits are essential for personal growth and lifelong learning, and we believe that recognizing them through our awards program reinforces their importance.
The Learner Profile, a key component of our academic environment, has been integrated into our classroom practices and is pivotal in helping students understand our expectations for their learning journey. The Profile, together with the College Values, guides students in developing contemporary learning dispositions necessary for success both in and out of the classroom.
This year’s Academic Achievement Award recognizes the top 3% of students in each course based on their cumulative assessment marks for Terms 1 and 2. This accolade celebrates those who have excelled academically and demonstrated exceptional commitment to their studies.
We are immensely proud of all our students and their achievements. Their dedication and hard work reflect the values we cherish and strive to instill in every learner. Congratulations once again to all our award recipients listed below

College Athletics Carnival
This year we just snuck in before the weekend’s rain!
A fantastic week of weather and a looming weekend forecast meant that a few options had to be put in place to accommodate the carnival. Fortunately, the weather held off and we were able to run the carnival in its entirety.
The overnight cloud cover meant we arrived with dry grounds for the start of our day. We kicked off with the 1500 m races, followed by the 200 m races as we awaited our student arrivals. Age groups then rotated through three field events before we returned to the velodrome for the 400 m races. Age groups then returned to finish the final three rotations before we watched the 100 m finals and the relay races, as the school came together in their house groups.
Highlights for the day included:
The excellent behaviour and overall participation of the students in attendance. It was great to see them embrace the community spirit of the carnival and enjoy having a race and a laugh with their mates.
Lincoln Markulin in the Opens Javelin throwing a PB of 53 m to break the College record.
We crowned the following Age Champions:
Under 12: Liam Van Eck - Doolan
Under 13: Ambrose Plunkett - Shanahan
Under 14: Archie Lawson - Spillane
Under 15: Cruz Tucker - Spillane
Under 16: Zach Sammut - Doolan
Opens: Cooper Jones - Knights
In one of the closest carnivals in recent memory, Spillane was crowned the Overall House Champion on 882 points. They were followed closely by Knights on 800, Doolan on 727 and Shanahan on 654.
Boys who have been successful in making the College team will be notified in the coming weeks of their events in preparation for the CSBB Athletics Carnival in Week 7, Term 3.
A big thank you must go out to all staff who helped in their varied roles to make the day a success.

Young Musicians Shine at Music Enrichment Program
Years 4 and 5 Music Enrichment Program
On June 4, enthusiastic Year 4 and 5 students, nominated by their Catholic primary schools, gathered at St Edward's College for a memorable Music Enrichment program. This exciting event, organised by Mrs Annette Rankin and supported by talented Year 9 and 10 students from both St Edward's and St Joseph's Colleges, aimed to ignite a passion for music and performance among the young participants.
Throughout the day, the students embarked on an enriching musical journey filled with diverse activities. They participated in an African drum workshop, a vocal workshop, explored innovative sounds with computer music, and learned to play and sing a group band piece, "Three Little Birds." This piece was specially arranged to accommodate all instruments and voices, ensuring that students of every skill level could join in and contribute. The sessions were run by our Performing Arts faculty: Mrs Annette Rankin, Mrs Jodie Connor, Mr Paul Toole and Mr Justin Kane.
The culmination of their hard work and creativity was showcased in a special performance for their families, highlighting the students' ensemble talents and enthusiasm. The Music Enrichment program not only provided a platform for young musicians to shine but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration across different school years and institutions.
We would like to thank all staff and students involved in making this day a success. Your dedication and effort have made a lasting impact on the young musicians who participated.

Fun and Friendship at Year 7 Camp
On Wednesday, 14 February, 187 Year 7 students embarked on their inaugural College camp.
The boys had only begun their school journey eight days prior to departure, making their eagerness and readiness to participate commendable.
Over the course of three days, the boys encountered a range of weather conditions while engaging in various activities. During tent setup, the heat was intense, raising a few concerns and requiring a few adjustments. Nonetheless, all students persevered, diligently applying sunscreen and preparing for a packed afternoon of activities.
The activities encompassed Abseiling, Flying Fox, Leap of Faith, Burma Bridge, Raft Building, Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, Slingshot, Canoeing, and Orienteering. Witnessing each student overcome personal challenges with determination was truly inspiring.
The primary goal of this camp was to foster connections and a sense of belonging within their new year group. I encouraged all students to forge new friendships during the three days, hoping they embraced this opportunity. Bringing together 193 students from diverse educational backgrounds marked a heartening start to their high school journey.

Commencement Mass
Be the best you can be
The College Commencement Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony presided over by Father Vince the Parish Priest at Terrigal. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Our musicians were thoroughly prepared by our music staff led by Mrs Rankin and Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
Father Vince spoke eloquently on this year’s theme “Be the best you can be.” Our College Principal, Mr Bonnici, also spoke about the importance of our College values. All who heard these speakers would understand that the men of St Edward's College are expected to put their best effort into all they do. The students were also encouraged to use their gifts and talents to involve themselves in as many activities as possible.

Welcome Year 7
After saying goodbye to family at the school gates on their first day, Year 7 were presented with their stationery packs and guided into their Home Room groups by our senior school leaders, where they met their Home Room teacher.
After a tour of the school with the Year 11 and 12 students in their Home Room, Year 7 spent the remainder of the day with their Core teachers and classmates, playing games, making new friends, and familiarising themselves with our school expectations.
Over the next few days, they received their new laptops, had their photographs taken for their student ID cards and will master the art of opening their lockers. This Friday is our school Swimming Carnival, I hope all boys will join with enthusiasm and cheer on their school house.
I have heard countless accounts of positive feedback from teachers about how seamless Year 7’s transition has been. The St Edward’s community looks forward to learning about each new Eddie’s boy, and we wish them all the success for the remainder of the year. Congratulations boys, great start!

Year 10 Camp
Year 10 Camp Report, Written by William Lynch
Up before first light and down after dark. The first day had us on our toes and it was the first taste of our amazing camp to Jindabyne. The bus trip was long, and we had our moments, but we got through it and arrived at camp. We were introduced to our camp leaders and our teachers were as enthusiastic as ever. We picked out our bunks and we went down to the oval for a game of football before heading to our first meal. The food was amazing during the camp and I’m sure we can all agree that the kitchen staff made our camp that extra bit more enjoyable. The food was tasty and warm, and it hit the spot. A few injuries came with the first day and we learned that playing tip in the dark was not the greatest of ideas. The next three days would encompass activities that would test our boundaries and let us reach our limits whether that be from an 18km hike up Mt Kosciuszko or getting hit in the back of the head by a snowball from Mr Ellis. There were some challenges, but the hike was so much fun, and our hard work was rewarded with incredible panoramic views over the ranges. After that, we all needed a good night's sleep. We all were falling asleep in our chairs and making fun of each other as the next person crashed, we all slept well that night. Big shout out to the teachers who put up with us for during the long day.
Next came the bike riding, with all the gear strapped on and our bags packed. The instructors were so helpful, and they really made the day special. From the sharp berms to the steep hills, the pump track to the flow. There were plenty of tracks for us to learn and show off our skills although, we had our fair share of incidents. The highlight of the day had to be Mr Rozario getting overly competitive in a pump track race and falling head over handlebars to try and get a win. Unfortunately, the shorts did not survive the fall. Finally, we had raft building and abseiling. In rotations, two groups alternated. One session involved using materials to build a suitable raft for your team to paddle out into the lake and back. Then we had abseiling, which tested our limits and showed us who feared heights.
During the camp we spent two nights in tents, one at Thredbo diggings, one at Island Bend, and two in cabins at Bungarra. These different settings offered different challenges and rewards, ranging from the tv and foosball tables at the cabins, to the river at Thredbo Diggings. A lot of us went for a swim in the freezing river and Mr Gentle embraced the cold and went for a session freestyle. We dried ourselves, went and made our own dinner and all gathered around our group's campfire and enjoyed the delicious cookies. I must admit they were pretty good. At the end of the camp, we all told our favourite moments and had a great laugh, and we finally had our last sleep in Jindabyne. The next day we said our goodbyes and were back on the bus to school.
Thank you to all the teachers who came on the trip and made the journey so much more enjoyable. I’d also like to mention all the camp staff who were on-site with us for the week.

Brighter Futures Program
We are delighted to share the highlights of the Aboriginal Cultural Program that has unfolded over the past six weeks, providing our Aboriginal students with a rich and meaningful exploration of their heritage.
Cultural Learning with Aunty Beth, Uncle John, and Fletcher
Aunty Beth, Uncle John, and Fletcher from Cultural Choice Association have taught the students much about Aboriginal culture, imparting invaluable insights into various aspects of culture from bush foods and medicines to creation stories. These sessions not only deepened their understanding but also fostered a strong sense of pride and connection to their culture.
Wellbeing Workshops
In addition to cultural education, Fletcher led empowering wellbeing workshops focused on teenage mental health. The sessions provided essential tools and strategies for our students to navigate the challenges of adolescence while promoting a positive and resilient mindset. We believe that fostering mental health awareness is integral to nurturing well-rounded individuals, and these workshops were a crucial component of the program.
Collaborative Artwork Reflecting Identity
Throughout the program, students engaged in a collaborative art project that beautifully captures the essence of their identity, the spirit of our College, and the richness of their cultural heritage. This artwork stands as a visual testament to the unity and diversity within our school community, showcasing the unique perspectives and talents of each participant.
As we conclude this transformative six-week journey, we extend our gratitude to Aunty Beth, Uncle John, and Fletcher for their dedication and expertise. Their contributions have left an indelible mark on our students, fostering a deeper appreciation for their cultural identity, and equipping them with valuable tools for personal growth.
We look forward to future initiatives that continue to celebrate and honour the diverse heritage within our school community.

Year 8 Camp Adventures
The students were well-behaved, and the activities were demanding, a testament to the fact that the boys went to sleep on both nights tired yet satisfied.
Food was abundant; there were seconds and thirds available for those with an appetite. Activities available to the students included surfing, beach sports, kayaking, mega paddling, archery tag, bush walks, and initiatives. For dinner each night, the group was divided into two: one group had hamburgers cooked for them, while the other group cooked their own meals, and Trangia's Spaghetti Bolognese was on the menu. Groups of three and four students worked together under the direction of their camp instructors. The following night, the groups swapped; we have some budding young chefs among our Year 8 students.
The highlight of the camp, however, had to be the intergroup volleyball competition held on the last day, with groups 7 and 13 competing in the final. Group 7 won the final with a score of 21 points to 19, becoming the inaugural champions of the St Edward's Killalea State Park Volleyball Championships.

The North Challenge
St Edward's and St Joseph's collaborate to win the North Challenge!
Congratulations to the St Edward's/St Joseph's team for their triumphant collaboration in winning the North Challenge! After three months of meticulous planning and dedicated efforts to address the issue of Housing Affordability on the Central Coast, they emerged as victors, against other Central Coast schools in the competition.
The team actively participated in six workshops alongside executives from North Construction, gaining insights into the company's operations and procedures. This experience proved invaluable in shaping their own company, which was founded to address the specific problem. Their solution involved the development of affordable, efficient, and sustainable 3D-printed homes for lower-income families.
Their comprehensive proposal encompassed various aspects, including their vision, objectives, company values, expectations, SWOT analysis, SMART goals, GANTT chart, Milestones chart, company direction, organizational structure, elements of workplace culture, employee satisfaction plan, target customer identification, investment and cost estimates, rental solutions, loan and sponsor estimates, feasibility study, 3D-printed house design and associated costs, as well as career opportunities within their business.
In addition to this strategic planning, the team also established a web presence, designed business cards, and successfully produced a handheld 3D-printed house, all according to their specifications.

Year 12 Farewell Assembly
What a fitting conclusion to the six-year journey of our graduating class of 2023.
The entire school community recognised and bid farewell to Year 12 with a standing ovation as they walked through the College towards the ERC. In the ERC, Year 11 greeted them with a guard of honor before the commencement of the Farewell Assembly.
During the Assembly first and second place awards were presented for each subject and the special memorial awards were announced at the conclusion of the Assembly. Congratulations to Troy Duncan who earned the prestigious title of College Dux, and Zane Smith who was honoured as Sportsperson of the Year, two coveted distinctions well-deserved by exceptional students. Please see the program below for first and second place recipients and the special memorial awards.
We extend our sincerest wishes to all students and their families for success in the upcoming weeks and months. We eagerly anticipate witnessing the remarkable accomplishments of these young men in the future.

Year 12 Graduation Mass
The Year 12 Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Vince was a fitting farewell for our students and their families.
At this Mass one of our students, Kenan Fonseka responded to the Gospel. His response was insightful and exemplified the characteristics that, as a staff, we aspire to instill in our students after six years at St Edward’s College.
For the first time there was a parent/staff choir who sang two songs as a gift to the students. A big thank you to all those who contributed to this delightful occasion.

Founder’s Day Celebration
On Founder’s Day each year we come together to celebrate our College, our Founder Edmund Rice, and to deepen our sense of community and service to others.
Edmund Rice is the example we look to in learning about standing with the poor, being ‘other’ centred and generally about being a good human person; letting our humanity shine to promote and increase the dignity and respect we afford our fellow men and women. Throughout the day as a College we raised funds for those who are marginalised or disadvantaged within our community AND built a stronger sense of belonging with one another. The gold coin donations again contributed to our support and our sponsorship of the education of Fredrick Were in Kenya.
This year is a special year within the history of St Edward's, as it marks the 70th Anniversary of the College. Being such a significant year, the 70th Anniversary was the focus of Founder’s Day in 2023 and the students were asked to celebrate the College in their own unique way.
To do this, students worked in their Home Rooms to create, practice or be involved in something that celebrated the 70 years of St Edward’s College. From writing letters to Fredrick or building closer community relationships by throwing sponges at teachers, multiple aspects of who we are as a College were on display.
Stairs Sprint - Results
The Stairs Sprint run during Founders Day produced great competition and many fast times. Many students from all year groups attempted the Stair Sprint challenge. Some students had many attempts to try and improve their time. The following times were the best on the day.
Congratulations to Miki Szczytnicki in Year 7 with a time of 4.19 seconds and Blake Downs in Year 12 with a time of 4.01 seconds, who set the fastest times ever for their Year groups since records began in 2014.
Year 7 – Miki Szczytnicki: 4.19 seconds
Year 8 – Cruz Tucker: 4.50 seconds
Year 9 – Jayden Moggs: 4.32 seconds
Year 10 – Jesse Mantel: 4.37 seconds
Year 11 – Arky Cleverly: 3.80 seconds
Year 12 – Blake Downs: 4.01 seconds

Teaching Excellence
Celebrating Teaching Excellence
We are honoured to announce to our community that Mrs Juliana Dignam, the College Leader of Learning in Careers/VET Education, has been nominated as a finalist for the NSW/ACT Careers Adviser of the Year award. This nomination is the highest honour afforded to a small selection of Careers Advisers each year by the Careers Adviser Association of NSW and ACT who represent over 800 Careers Advisers from Government, Catholic and Independent High Schools in NSW and ACT.
The nomination recognises elite Careers Advisers who are excelling in the implementation and delivery of Career Development Education in their school as well as those who have dedicated their time to supporting their Career Adviser colleagues to deliver excellence in their own role.
[caption id="attachment_46434" align="alignright" width="230"] Juliana Dignam[/caption]
Juliana has worked tirelessly since being appointed to her role at St Edward’s in the organisation and implementation of a Careers Education and Vocational Training program which is of the highest quality. She is committed to ensuring that St Edward’s leads the way in this educational domain, constantly seeking opportunities to benefit our boys in their preparation of post school pathways. Her recent achievements include in 2023, the Inaugural St Edward’s Careers Expo which was held at the College earlier this year where exhibitors from University, TAFE, employment agencies, local companies in a range of trades and professions, the Defence Force and Police Services were exhibitors for Catholic School students on the Central Coast to attend. In 2022 Juliana introduced the Year 10 End of Year Pathways Program, mock interviews for Year 10 students with members of the local community volunteering to assist students in preparation for part time and full-time work and the introduction of a timetabled Careers Education program in Year 10.
Juliana has developed great connections and partnerships with many local industries and assisted many students in the attainment of apprenticeships. She coordinates our School Based Traineeships and the external study of courses though TAFE for students as part of their HSC pattern of study.
The ultimate winner of this award will be announced at a ceremony in October this year and we wish Juliana every success in this process.

Youth Community Service
Youth Community Service Award
It is with great pleasure that we inform our community that Joshua Judd of Year 12 has been selected to receive a Youth Community Service Award by the NSW Branch of the Order of Australia Association. The Award recognises NSW senior High School students who have shown commendable service to their local communities.
[caption id="attachment_46435" align="alignright" width="230"] Joshua Judd[/caption]
Throughout his time at St Edward's College, Joshua has consistently gone above and beyond in his efforts to serve others. One notable example of his service is his extensive involvement with Coast Shelter from 2018 - 2023. Joshua has volunteered in the kitchen, dedicating his time to cooking and serving meals to the homeless and those sleeping rough. His compassionate approach and unwavering commitment have provided nourishment and hope to some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
In addition to his work at Coast Shelter, Joshua also volunteered as a surf life saver at Macmasters Beach Surf Life Saving Club from 2018 - 2023, actively contributing to the safety and well-being of beachgoers in our community. His selfless dedication to this vital role demonstrates his willingness to put the needs of others before his own. By committing his time and skills, Joshua has undoubtedly saved lives and contributed to creating a safer coastal environment for all.
Recognising the importance of caring for the elderly, Joshua has volunteered his time for nursing home residence visits in 2018 and 2019. By engaging in these visits, he demonstrated compassion and empathy towards the aged members of our community, brightening their days with companionship and genuine care. His involvement in such activities showcases his understanding of the value of intergenerational connections and the positive impact it has on both the residents and the wider community.
Furthermore, we would like to highlight Joshua's remarkable achievement of completing over 100 hours of community service every year from 2018 to 2023 while studying at St Edward's College.
Joshua will be presented this award by Her Excellency, The Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of NSW at a ceremony at Government House in September.
We congratulate Joshua on this achievement.

Student Led Conferences for Years 7 to 12
During Term 3 parents/carers, teachers and students will have two opportunities to meet online and reflect on the learning that has taken place this year to date.
The dates and details for the Student Led Conferences will be:
Thursday 20 July (Week 1) from 4.00 pm to 7:30 pm
Thursday 27 July (Week 2) from 4.00 pm to 7:30 pm
These conferences will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Teachers will call the students on their Microsoft Teams account at the scheduled booking time to make contact – students must ensure they are logged in to Microsoft Teams using their St Edward's College email. It is preferable that students use their school laptop for this. Microsoft Teams meetings will not be recorded by teaching staff and we request that parents and students not record meetings either.
All conferences are intended to support your child in developing a greater sense of responsibility for their learning. It will be compulsory for students to attend all scheduled meetings with their parents/carers. Students will be expected to take an active role in leading their parents/carers and teachers through a reflection on their learning in that subject. There will be an expectation that students complete a reflection on their progress for each subject prior to the meeting. The student, parents/carers and teachers will then reflect on and evaluate the learning goals set and discuss strategies to address areas of challenge and achieve learning growth throughout Semester 2.
The Student Led Conference bookings are managed with an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). The steps to access PTO are via the link below – once completed, you will receive an email from PTO allowing you to book interviews with your son’s teachers that you wish to see. Please note that bookings are limited. All interviews will be of seven minutes duration.
Access to PTO will be available from Thursday 29 June at 7:00 pm and will be closed off for bookings two days before interviews.

70th Celebration – A Big Night Out
On Thursday June 15, the College held a Musical Performance Night to mark the 70th Anniversary of the College.
The evening, which was held in the Edmund Rice Centre, was a huge success, providing an opportunity for past and current students to perform musical items. Over two hundred ex-students, teachers and support staff along with current staff and students were entertained with a range of outstanding musical performances from different eras and genres.
The evening provided many old boys with the opportunity to connect with old school mates, some of whom had not seen each other for over thirty years. Also present on the evening was the first ever female student to join classes at St Edward’s, Mrs Mavourna Collits. Mavourna attended the College in 1958 to study Latin with Br Shanahan the first College Principal. The “Forever the Black and Red” historical publication was also launched on the night marking the seventy years that St Edward’s has provided a quality Catholic Education to young people of the Central Coast.
I would like to thank Mrs Annette Rankin, the College Leader of Performing Arts, Mr Paul Toole, Music Teacher and Mrs Meagan Armstrong, Event Coordinator, for their work in organising this historical occasion.

College Athletics Carnival
The College Athletics Carnival was run and won on Tuesday 30 May at Adcock Park.
We could not have asked for a better day. Wonderful weather and a combination of students who embraced the carnival atmosphere and enthusiastically represented their Houses.
There we many highlights during the day:
Mr Griffin challenging Will Browning and Keenan White in the Opens 1500m race. His early race pace would be his downfall. He chased redemption, later in the day in the 400m, with a more conservative strategy, seeing him fly home in second place.
Noah Nakagawa setting a new record in Opens 100m heats with a time of 11.37sec.
Zane Smith challenging the Opens High Jump Record (1.92m), a late change of shoes couldn’t get him above the bar.
The overall behaviour and level of participation across the age groups.
We also crowned the following Age Champions:
Under 12: Ewan McHale - Spillane
Under 13: Jamie Vernon - Shanahan
Under 14: Owen Clark - Spillane
Under 15: Kallum Moggs - Knights
Under 16: Cooper Jones - Knights
Opens: Lincoln Markulin - Knights
Overall, the day was won by Knights (Green House) on 1247 points, with Spillane (Red House) on 1106, Doolan (White House) on 962 and Shanahan (Blue House) on 896.

College Mural
We are very excited to announce another College first this year.
St Edward’s College has been fortunate enough to have their first College Mural designed and painted by Local Aboriginal Artists Grant Molony, Russ Molony and Jason Goulding. In consultation with the artists, our Aboriginal students, local community and Elders on the Central Coast, it was decided that local animals that are present on the Coast and ones that have significance within local Aboriginal culture would be included in the mural. These include a Sea Eagle, Kookaburra, Stingray, Sea Turtle and Eel. The four house colours have been incorporated into the artwork and into the future, four of the animals will be aligned with a house to become their totem. The artwork took place over four days and we thank the community of St Edward’s for being respectful of the site during this time. Grant said many classes came down to watch them work and they had several discussions with students and staff throughout the process.
From the Artists:
In our Aboriginal culture we have three families. Our immediate family, our community and mother herself, the natural environment.
These are the foundations of connection, inclusion and ownership. Represented through three clear realms of land, sky and sea.
The interwoven connection of sky, land and sea. Spoken through the amazing natural world on our doorstep.
The land will be warm and caring.
The sky is breath and stillness.
The sea calming and cooling.
Our work speaks of a journey readable both ways. A travel story of learning and growth both intriguing and inspiring coming from either sky or sea.
Uplifting with an underlying voice of strength and respect.
Thank you Grant, Russ and Jason for all your hard work and for opening Reconciliation Week with this beautiful legacy.

70th Anniversary Mass
The College Founder's Day Mass was a special day for St Edward's celebrating 70 years serving the Central Coast community.
There were many invited guests who have had significant involvement with the College over the years. It was an honour to see past Christian Brothers, Principals, College Captains, Duxes, old boys and past staff in attendance. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony which was presided over by Bishop Anthony Rondazzo. Father Greg Skulski from St Patrick’s Parish concelebrated Mass with Bishop Anthony. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians consisting of staff and students who performed during Mass. Students in the band were thoroughly prepared by Mrs Rankin and Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
A big thank you to all that contributed to this wonderful community celebration.

Easter Liturgy
The tradition of sharing our Holy Week celebration with St Joseph’s Catholic College to remember the significance of Easter continued this year.
Once again, the ERC was packed with students, staff and parents from both Colleges. This was a solemn ceremony of prayer, song, and drama.
The Passion of Christ is followed by witnessing the Stations of the Cross. Our Year 10 were outstanding in presenting the final days of Jesus.
The musicians on the day, under the guidance of the music staffs from both Colleges produced brilliant performances and created a great atmosphere. Congratulations to all the students who prepared so thoroughly for this wonderful community event.

Careers Pathways Expo a Great Success
On 30 March, St Edward’s College was the host of a Careers Pathways Expo for parents and students from Years 10 to 12.
The event targeted parents and students, due to recent research determining parents are the key influencers in their child’s career pathways decisions. The College invited experts and key exhibitors from universities, colleges, local employers, TAFE, associations, and defence forces to educate and guide those present. We also had two special presentations on Early Entry Schemes and studying overseas.
To reach more parents, we extended the invitation to parents from St Joseph’s Catholic College, St Peter’s Catholic College, MacKillop Catholic College, and St Brigid’s Catholic College and we thank the 453 parents who registered and attended with their families, making over 1000 attendees. Adventures at Year 9 Camp
On Wednesday 8 March, Year 9 arrived at school early to embark on their camp at Wee Jasper, southwest of Yass. It was a different climate compared to what the boys are used too, say goodbye to 20-degree nights and welcome to 4-degree fresh Autumn air.
The energy of the boys after they hopped off a four-and-a-half-hour bus ride was high, as they were eager to eat some lunch and get stuck into an afternoon of activities. They had some downtime after their first activity, many played touch football and cricket, while others preferred to sit with friends and share stories. We had a night bushwalk to wind down ahead of a massive day two, as the boys were required to complete three activities.
Students were given a goal ahead of camp, to talk to someone new over the three days. It was great to see that most boys did that, many making new friends over the three days. It was also pleasing to see each student giving all activities a go, making this camp one that will be remembered forever.
College and camp staff were so pleased with the behaviour and efforts of the boys. In fact, a member of the public who was camping there shared positive feedback and was extremely impressed by how the boys expressed themselves.
Onto Jindabyne in Year 10!

Fun and Friendship at the Year 7 Camp
On Wednesday 22 February four coaches arrived at St Edward’s to meet 166 very excited Year 7 students and 16 slightly nervous staff! Torrential rain the night before did not dampen the boys’ enthusiasm and we arrived at Crosslands Reserve ready to be ferried across to the camping site at Galston.
For many boys this was their first experience of camping and the responsibility of setting up their own tents was taken very seriously by all. They did a great job and despite some rain and gusty winds over the three days we had no tent collapses and all managed to stay warm and dry (ish!)
Daytimes were spent stand up paddle boarding, abseiling, canoeing and orienteering. The favourite activity was definitely the flying fox – especially the joy of hearing your teacher scream louder than any student on the vertical drop. Special mention to Mrs Titheradge! Evenings were spent enjoying marshmallows around the campfire and playing team building games.
Feedback from teachers and the Camp providers consistently praised the boys for their cooperation, their empathy and encouragement of others and their desire to challenge themselves to stretch beyond their comfort zone. St Edward’s Camp Spirit Awards will acknowledge those students who were outstanding in these areas at our next Pastoral Assembly.
Thank you to George and Fiona at Outdoor Education Australia and their amazing team and the 16 St Edward’s staff for their generous support of our Year 7 students.
Reflections from Year 7
“Camp was awesome!” Max
“The activities were fun but the main thing is I did heaps of new things.” Byron
“I loved every single activity it was really awesome” Sachin

Commencement Mass
Be the Best You Can Be
The College Commencement Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony presided over by Father Greg the Parish Priest at St Patrick’s Parish. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Our musicians were thoroughly prepared by our music staff led by Mrs Rankin and Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
Father Greg spoke eloquently on this year’s theme Be the best you can be. Our College Principal, Mr Bonnici, also spoke about the importance of this year's theme at our College. All who heard these speakers would understand that the men of St Edward's College are expected to put their best effort into all they do. The students were also encouraged to use their gifts and talents to involve themselves in as many activities as possible.

Welcome Year 7
What a busy week Year 7 have had!
After saying goodbye to family at the school gates on their first day, Year 7 were guided into their Home Room groups by our senior school leaders, meeting their Home Room teacher and receiving their stationery packs and kit bag. After a tour of the school with the Year 11 and 12 students in their Home Room, Year 7 spent the remainder of the day with their Core teachers and classmates, playing games and making new friends.
Over the next few days, they received their new laptops, had photographs taken for their student ID cards and mastered the art of opening their lockers – quite a tricky skill! On Friday they joined in the school Swimming Carnival with enthusiasm, both swimming and cheering on their house.
Teachers have been very impressed with their composure and positive attitude as they move around the school, and we look forward to really getting to know each student. Congratulations Year 7 on a fantastic start to your high school journey!

2023 College Swimming Carnival
We will be conducting our swimming carnival on Friday 3 February 2023 at the Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy.
Given the short turnaround with the start of school and the swimming carnival, students/parents are asked to use the below link to nominate their chosen events. Nominations will be accepted until 3pm Wednesday 1 February 2023.
Click Here to Nominate for Events
Below are some important practical details regarding the carnival:
Transport
Normal school buses will run in the morning/afternoon and students will catch a bus from the College to the pool and back again in the afternoon.
Other students may make their own way to the carnival if appropriate. All boys making their own way to the carnival need to be at the pool by 8.45am, unless they are competing in the 200m events (see next point).
Any student competing in 200m events need to be at the pool by 8.30 am at the very latest.
As maximum participation is the aim of the day, points will be allocated for every student entering an event. Any boy who attends the carnival is required to participate by:- Swimming in all events appropriate to his ability level;
- Assisting teaching staff in conducting the carnival in some capacity ie: official duties;
It is imperative that students do not bring large sums of money or valuable equipment.
Parents, carers and relatives are more than welcome to attend on the day however it is recommended you bring your own chair as seating is minimal.
The College Prefects and Leaders will be required at the pool early in the day to assist with carnival set up and again at the end of the day to assist with packing up of the carnival.
The co-operation of boys and their families with these guidelines will ensure that it is an enjoyable day for all in attendance.

Sun and Surf at Year 8 Camp
Well boys, we made it through three tough days of camp. I would like to commend all for coming, and for most of you this was your first camp since Year 5.
It was an early start on the Wednesday but all boys arrived on time, and were eager to make their way to Killalea State Park. Thank you to all the parents for the early drop off.
Day 1 entailed the boys arriving around 9:00am to be broken up into 10 different groups. They had to construct their own tent, and for some this was a challenge. All boys showed resilience and perseverance to get the job done in a strong wind. Some tents went flying, but we all eventually got there! Then it was time to sunscreen up and hit our first lot of activities.
There were five activities on offer: Surfing, Beach Sports, Bush Walk, Mega Paddle plus Kayaking, and Archery Tag. It was quite a walk to each activity (and extremely hot) so I am proud of the boys for keeping up their fluids and showing a willingness to participate. Black Diamond definitely looked after us in regards to food, we received bacon and eggs for breakfast, ham and salad sandwiches for lunch, and burgers plus burritos for dinner.
Day 2 had the boys rise early to get stuck into three lots of activities. There were a few burnt and tired souls come Thursday afternoon, with most of the boys falling asleep while watching a movie before bed. Once all boys entered their tent, they crashed.
We were blessed with the weather as there was not a cloud in the sky for the entire trip. As a school, we are thankful for Black Diamond for going above and beyond to provide our boys with an experience that they will not forget.

Stepping Outside Their Comfort Zone at Year 10 Camp
Jindabyne was the setting for our camp and it was certainly one that we won’t forget any time soon.
The weather was extreme: snow, wind, rain, sun and everything in between! Some of our students walked up one of the highest peaks in Australia with minimal visibility - due to the blizzard-like conditions - and after conquering this 15 km hike they were buzzing with energy. Their adversity was on show and even the staff had to overcome numerous obstacles, with two members ending up in Canberra Hospital due to injuries (they survived). The cycling activity was another test of character as it combined a skills component mixed with long rides through the mountains. Abseiling, raft building, fire building, cooking and myriad other activities provided each boy with opportunities to grow and develop the resilience that comes from an experience such as this.

Alumni Event
On Friday, we hosted a fabulous Alumni Event for our Year 12 (2023) students.
Students rotated between three Alumni to hear about their changing definition of success and squiggly pathways. A special thank you to our Old Boys - Phil Dibben, Danny May, Ben McInnes, Ben Cutrupi, Peter Sullivan, Paul Nicholas, Alexander Blanch, Darren Cocks and John Fisher. With industry areas covered such as Pharmacy, IT, Insurance, Trade, Education, Import/Exporting, Police, Nursing and Business, our students were very fortunate indeed. This event would not have been initiated without funding from Regional School Alumni Event Program Proudly supported by NSW Government. Special thanks to Jillian Williams RIEP Senior Project Officer.
I look forward to the Alumni school program continuing in 2023.

Fun and Friendship at the Year 7 Camp
Over three adventurous days, Year 7 embarked on their first St Edward’s College School Camp.
On Wednesday 2 November, students travelled to Crosslands Reserve in Hornsby Heights where they crossed Berowra Creek on the barge ready for a busy three days of outdoor activities. The boys stepped out of their comfort zone and faced their fears by abseiling natural rock walls, traversing across river bridges and battling the high ropes. Students explored the waterways on canoes and stand-up paddle boards and tried their hand at raft building! We were extremely proud of how well the boys banded together to share their skills and support each other through each task.
The nights were spent in cabins and tents where the boys gained experienced erecting and taking down their tent, organising their things and tidying up after each night. After each busy day, half the boys relaxed by the campfire, while the other half enjoyed a movie or some games as a group.
We are extremely proud of the resilience and sportsmanship displayed by the boys, as well as the care and support they showed each other during moments of vulnerability. We hope the boys enjoyed their time at camp and have some memories that will last a life time.

Goodbye, Good Luck Year 12
The Final Day
What a fitting way to end six years of High School for our graduating class of 2022. The day started with a BBQ breakfast which, as always, was very well received by the boys. It was wonderful to see both staff and students coming together and talking about future opportunities over a bacon and egg roll. Recognition from the whole school community came about in the form of a guard of honour walk through, which took the boys around the quad to a standing ovation from the rest of the student body.
This walk ended with the traditional tree planting ceremony. The boys also got to play their end of year game of touch and football on the oval. These high stakes games were played in great spirit and with great energy. There was also an opportunity for some to go and support the Opens Rugby league team competing in the National Schoolboy Trophy which was a fantastic occasion and great to see so many supporting their school mates.
The day finished with a combined mass and awards ceremony. This was a truly special way to finish and it was wonderful to see so many proud parents and family members in the audience. Congratulations to all the award winners and special mention to the Sportsman of the Year, Sebastian Plaister and the College Dux of 2022, Fergus Clydesdale.
We wish all the boys and their families every success over the coming weeks and months and look forward to seeing what this group of young men can achieve.

Graduation Mass
The Year 12 Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Vince was a fitting farewell for our students and their families. At this Mass one of our students, Luke Richards responded to the Gospel.
A big thank you to all those who contributed to this delightful occasion.

Book Week
During Week 6, the Library was buzzing with all things books! We had daily ‘Guess the Book’ competitions, Kahoot, the Harry Potter escape room, a Sherlock Holmes ‘who dunnit?’ and plenty of other book related activities.
The boys were great participants, and their competitive nature really shone through with the highly coveted canteen vouchers up for grabs daily.
Our virtual Harry Potter escape room saw the boys working together to solve the puzzles to progress through each online room, and our Sherlock Holmes ‘who dunnit?’ had teams racing around the school to collect clues in order to solve the case – it was Longworth, with the sword, motivated by the manuscript in case you were wondering…
On Wednesday, Tim Selwyn from Girri Girra Aboriginal Experiences came in to share stories and cultural knowledge with the boys. He spoke about Aboriginal men’s business and the importance of being respectful of others and how it is vitally important to listen in order to learn.
On Friday, Book Week finished with a bang with staff and students coming dressed as their favourite book characters. At the assembly Mr Griffin shared a reading from his favourite series ‘Game of Thrones’ by George R R Martin to kick things off and then we celebrated our best dressed students with prizes. The photobooth was one of the highlights of the week and it was great to see staff and students embrace their inner child and have some fun all in the name of reading for pleasure.
Thank you to all the staff and students who were involved in creating games and promoting Book Week and a special thank you to all who came dressed up – it created a wonderful atmosphere.
Congratulations to our competition winners:
Monday: Jett Heaney, Tom Roth, Mason Potter, Flynn Zammit and Hudson Sky
Tuesday: Tom Barry and Billy Fennell
Wednesday: Harry Evans, Phelix de Vries and Ike Diffin
Thursday: Ben Stewart, Jivesh Shonak, Abhishek Thomas (with the assistance of Mr Le Page and Miss Nowalinski), Keenan White and Max Stride.

It was a fitting evening celebrating their efforts and achievements over the HSC Music course and an opportunity to share their love of music and performance skills with a wider audience before sitting for their HSC performance examination in Week 9.
This event was expertly crewed by the Year 11 Entertainment class who did an excellent job.
The atmosphere in the room and sense of connection our performers felt supporting their peers was truly lovely to be part of. We wish all our Year 12 Musicians the very best and we are very proud of their accomplishments.
Performance for Year 8
On Tuesday Year 8 were treated to a Music concert featuring some of our HSC Music students and some up and coming performers from Years 10 and 11. The event was crewed by Year 12 Entertainment students. The concert showcased a diverse range of genres and was performed to a very enthusiastic audience, providing our musicians with an avenue to hone their performance skills. The performers are to be congratulated on their excellent contributions to the event and Year 8 are to be commended on their exemplary behaviour as an engaged and supportive audience.

Gosford Police Station Mural Project
Two years ago, Chief Inspector Paul Nicholls approached the Photography department with an idea – a wall mural constructed of hundreds of photos of Gosford Police Station, telling the history of the station in pictorial form.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Photography students were assigned the task and we set to work – then the dreaded COVID hit! Two years and two lockdowns later, our project is completed and has come to fruition. Many hours have been spent by students editing each photo, merging, layering and photoshopping the mural, which measures a very large 1.8 m x 5.0 m in area. The mural was then delivered to a company for production and installation, and we are proud to present photos from the official opening ceremony of the mural in situ.
Congratulations go to the following students for their hard work and perseverance in contributing their share to the mural:
Flynn McHale, Will Turton, Nathan Collis, Andre Sirio, Conor Kelly, Will Clarke, Oliver Wagemaker.
These boys spent hours editing and proofing photos, erasing and changing backgrounds to make the mural as spectacular as it is. It is a credit to the boys and their perseverance, work ethic and professionalism. What a wonderful way to link our local Police representatives with a sense of community and pride – well done, Eddies!

Waste Audit Report – Environment Portfolio
On 27 July the College Environment Portfolio participated in a waste audit.
The idea came from a series of webinar sessions Take 3 for the Sea ran three years ago and it was great to see it finally come to fruition. There were three boys: Owen Bradstreet, Wilheim Hieber and Fletcher Moore who participated in these webinars three years ago and were there on the day to see through their initiative.
Owen and Wilheim ran the event which included students from each year group from 7-12. The students gathered one bin from each of the main areas of the school and then grouped the rubbish from that bin into separate sections on a big tarp in the school quadrangle. This was great, as the whole school got to see what we were doing and it was very interesting listening to the explanations and conversations between students in the portfolio and other students not in the portfolio.
The rubbish, as you can see in the photos, was divided up into foods that could be still eaten (left over sandwiches fruit etc), compostable rubbish (apple cores, citrus peels etc), recyclable rubbish (paper, card board etc), soft plastic recyclables (glad wrap, chip packets etc) and then finally the waste that could not be recycled or composted. It was amazing to see that of all the piles, the non recyclable rubbish pile was by far the lowest with only a few small objects that could not be recycled. This showed that if the school was able to introduce all of the above recycling options or students were to come trash free and recycle/compost the other items at home, we could potentially fill all of the College's rubbish into one red bin.
I look forward to watching the prefects present this to the school body and look at what initiatives can be introduced as a result. Well done to all those students who participated! Your passion and drive to make a change will make a difference.

Year 7 Goal Setting
The students in Mr English’s Core class completed some goal setting at the start of the term that included creating a series of “I WILL” statements.
The “I WILL” statements were inspired by the work of 1978 Surfing World Champion, Shaun Tomson who works with schools, charities and multi nationals to encourage all of us to believe in ourselves, face life’s challenges and commit to positive values.
During the process of putting the “I WILL” statements together, the boys were lucky to be in communication with Shaun who shared what it means to be creative, courageous and determined.
The artwork you see with the “I WILL” statements was created by Shaun and his team who put together the work, free of charge for the boys to share and have as a class display.

Student Led Learning Conferences Years 7 to 11
This Semester there will be two opportunities to meet your son’s teachers.
The first opportunity will be to have an online Microsoft Teams meetings on Thursday 30 June from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The second opportunity will be the next day on Friday 1 July where interviews will be conducted in person on site at the College. These will be from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Please note that the conferences on Thursday 30 June that will be held online as a Microsoft Teams meeting, will not be recorded by teaching staff and we request that parents and students not record meetings either.
All conferences are intended to support your son in developing a greater sense of responsibility for his learning. It will be compulsory for students to attend all scheduled meetings with their parents. Students will be expected to take an active role in leading their parents and teachers through a reflection on their learning in that subject. There will be an expectation that students complete a reflection on their progress for each subject prior to the meeting. The student, parents and teachers will then discuss some learning goals as they approach the Semester 2 assessments and strategies to address areas of challenge and achieve learning growth. It will also be a good opportunity to discuss the Semester 1 Report that will be published to the Parent/Student portals prior to the conferences.
The Learning Conference bookings will be managed with an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). Using this system, you will be able to book the conference times that suit you best. All conferences will be seven minutes in duration.
When you book for an online conference, the teachers will contact students on their device at the scheduled time via a Microsoft Teams meeting. This will mean that parents and students will need to be available at booked times with Microsoft Teams open.
When you book for a meeting at school you will need to go to the room indicated when you arrive at the College. There will be Year 12 prefects directing parents and students. This process and the process for student reflection will be further explained to students at upcoming year meetings.
Access to the system will be available from Tuesday 14 June at 7.00 pm and will be closed off for bookings the day before interviews.
If you encounter any problems using PTO, please contact the school office on 4321 6400.
Please follow these steps to access the system:
Click here go to the PTO website
Click on “Obtain PIN/Password” (you will need to supply your email address)
Enter your email address and click on “Send Email”
Check your email in-box for your login details or click on the link in the email
Go back to the PTO website, login with the details supplied via email

The College Founder's Day Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's.
The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony. Mass was presided over by Father Moloney the Parish Priest of The Entrance. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Students in the band were thoroughly prepared by Mrs Rankin, Mrs Emmett and Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.

Easter Liturgy
The tradition of sharing our Holy Week celebration with St Joseph’s College to remember the significance of Easter continued this year.
Once again, the ERC was packed with students, and staff from both Colleges. This was a solemn ceremony of prayer, song, and drama.
The Passion of Christ is followed by witnessing the Stations of the Cross. Our Year 10 and 12 students were outstanding in presenting the final days of Jesus.
The musicians on the day, under the guidance of the music staffs from both Colleges produced brilliant performances and created a great atmosphere in the hall. Congratulations to all the students who prepared so thoroughly for this wonderful community event.
A final thank you to all who contributed to the most important liturgical event on the Christian calendar.

Adventures at Year 9 Camp
Between 23 and 25 March, Year 9 spent two nights and three days on camp at Wee Jasper, just outside Yass.
The area is notable for its river systems and the many caving opportunities which was the focus of the camp experience. I was so impressed with the behaviour, resilience, determination, commitment, and comradeship the students displayed during the activities and in their relationships with their peers. The activities varied greatly but drew out the adventurous nature of the students.
The camp was well organised and ran very smoothly due to the professionalism and commitment of all Australian Outdoor Education staff and of course the St Edward’s College staff who came along and supported Year 9 in their activity groups. In speaking with the boys over the last couple of days and in feedback from parents, one can only say that the experience at Wee Jasper was a tremendous success and enjoyed by many.

A Day in the Life of St Edward’s
Nearly 200 Year 6 boys from across the coast were welcomed by the College attending a 'Day in the Life' where they experienced hands on learning activities.
The boys had the opportunity to engage in Science, Music, French, Art, Woodwork and PDHPE. The Leaders of Learning who led each of the activities, were supported by our aspiring student leaders from Year 10. A great day was had by all.
Testimonial: The students of St Patrick’s had a fantastic day. The teachers were fantastic. I would also like to personally thank the Year 10 boys who led our students around for the day. They were awesome, respectful and energetic. Such wonderful examples of outstanding students at St Edward’s. They engaged so well with the boys ensuring a calm and relaxed day. - Lee Sullivan, St Patrick's Teacher.

Visit by the Penrith Panthers
Yesterday the reigning NRL Premiers, the Penrith Panthers visited the College.
Club CEO, Matt Cameron, spoke about the importance of setting goals, being respectful and the management of the salary cap. Recruitment Officer, Jim Jones, spoke about the important personal qualities he looks for in a potential player outside of their ability on the field. The Panthers’ Wellbeing Officer, Joe Nulaveau (Premiership winner 2003) spoke about this important aspect for every person’s life for their growth and development.
Former players Sam Jones and Lee Hopkins then took our players onto the field and put them through some drills. Finally, the Premiership trophy was placed on display for students to get a photo with and many of our students took this opportunity. The representatives from Penrith were highly impressed with our students and were amazed by the memory of Brendan Escott from Year 11 who can recall the scores from every game since 2016. On behalf of St Edward’s, I would like to sincerely thank the Penrith Panthers Club for taking the time to educate and inspire our students who love the game of Rugby League.

Welcome Year 7
It was wonderful to see the confidence with which Year 7 started their first day.
Standing at the gates to greet our newest students it was clear that the only teary eyes were that of parents watching their sons make this big leap into high school.
Watching the boys greet one another it was clear just how eager students are to be back in the playground and connecting with their peers and our biggest goal for these early days is to support existing friendships and establish new ones.
Congratulations to our 218 new Eddies boys!

Due to COVID, we once again have not been able to conduct our annual Christmas Liturgy with the College community.
This liturgy on the last day is normally a joyous celebration that includes communal singing of Christmas carols. These prayers were led by the newly elected Prefects and they were well received by the College community.
Following the Liturgy, our Academic Awards Ceremony took place. We would like to congratulate our award recipients for their dedication to their studies during 2021. Special mention must go to the students who received our special and memorial awards for their outstanding community, academic and sporting achievements throughout the year. Good Luck Year 12
As a way of supporting Year 12 and wishing them good luck, staff were invited to send a recorded message.
The message may have been one of good luck, support, motivation, positive aspirations, a shout out to a particular class, tips etc.
It goes without saying, Year 12 are experiencing many challenges individually and collectively in their final year. This was a great way of reminding them they are part of a community, and they are in our thoughts.
Thank you to staff for taking up the invitation to wish the Year 12’s good luck in their upcoming assessment tasks. The messages were sent to Year 12's on the eve of their final assessments.

Waterford Ideas
Lockdown offers a time for students to complete Waterford, perhaps by looking outside the circle of what they may normally choose.
For example, boys could complete hours via:
An online first aid course
Phone calls to people in their family who may be isolated eg grandparents, family overseas, neighbours.
Advocacy campaigns, through websites eg poverty, disability, aged care etc
Reflections in their Waterford booklet (on CANVAS). Students can use time they spend writing reflections, in their Waterford hours.
Any time students spend on these campaigns should be signed off by parents.

200 Years in Catholic Education Mass
It was great to be able to gather with students from St Joseph’s College and St Patrick’s Primary School for this special celebration mass.
The ceremony was presided over by Father Paul from St Patrick’s Parish. Congratulations must go to all the brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. The musicians were thoroughly prepared by the music staff from each school. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
Father Paul spoke eloquently about the history of Catholic schools and the importance of those that have made a contribution throughout the years. A big thank you to all those who contributed to this wonderful celebration.

Year 12 Retreat
Year 12 Retreats at 'Winbourne' Mulgoa
The retreats of 2021 will be remembered for the great enthusiasm and involvement of all students who attended. Year 12 were given the opportunity to participate in important spiritual experiences on their three day Retreat amid the peaceful and serene environment of the Mulgoa Retreat Centre. They didn’t waste this opportunity.
Thanks to the staff from our College for their dedication to the Retreat program. Many staff from the College were instrumental in leading the boys through reflection, prayer, bushwalks and discussions about ‘Relationships and Consent', ‘What it is to be a Man in the 21st Century’, ‘Goal Setting’, ‘The Importance of Communication’, and their future directions. The celebration liturgy organised by the students was very special as it is the last Retreat for this cohort. Parents and staff should be very proud of the input and maturity shown by Year 12.
Our guest speakers for the retreat were Ms Connor and Mrs Abbott-Atchison. They both spoke brilliantly and the boys left with lots to think about. Their talks were informative and inspiring and were well received by the boys.
I am confident that these quality experiences will have a lasting effect upon our boys in preparing them for the future. I have no doubt that in years to come, many boys will remember these few days as being very significant in their lives. I thank and congratulate all Year 12 for the quality of their involvement.
The staff at Mulgoa were lavish in their praise of these fine young men from St Edward's. They could not speak highly enough of their positive attitude, friendliness, cooperation, courtesy, and willingness to enter completely into the spirit of the Retreat. A typical comment about the boys was, “I can’t get over how well rounded they are, probably because they have been exposed to a variety of social justice experiences.” This particular group is a great credit to their families and the College.
A special thank you to Mr McCauley the Year 12 Pastoral Leader, and Mrs Palmer-Brown our Leader of Learning Religious Education, for all the great work they did during these important days of review and reflection.

Founder’s Day Mass
The College Founders Day Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's.
The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony. Mass was presided over by Father Vince Casey, the Parish Priest of Terrigal. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Students in the band were thoroughly prepared by Mr Toole, Mrs Emmett and Mr Charles. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
The tradition of recognising long serving staff continue at the conclusion of Mass with fifteen staff receiving awards for their long years of service to the College. Mr Sutton made special mention of Mr Massey, Mr Streeting and Mr Moloney for 35 years of service at the College.
A big thank you to all who contributed to this wonderful community celebration.

Easter Liturgy
The tradition of sharing our Holy Week celebration with St Joseph’s to remember the significance of Easter continued this year.
Once again the ERC was packed with students and staff from both Colleges. This was a solemn ceremony of prayer, song, and drama.
The Passion of Christ is followed by witnessing the Stations of the Cross. Our Year 10 and 12 students were outstanding in presenting the final days of Jesus. The students from St Joseph’s performed a liturgical dance which was reverent and performed to the highest standard.
The musicians on the day, under the guidance of the music staffs from both Colleges, produced brilliant performances and created a great atmosphere. Congratulations to all the students who prepared so thoroughly for this wonderful community event.
A final thank you to all who contributed to the most important liturgical event on the Christian calendar.

A Day in the Life of St Edward’s College
A Day in the Life of St Edward's College for Year 6 Students
On 4 March the College welcomed, for the day, nearly 300 Year 6 boys representing some 35 primary schools from Brooklyn to Toukley. Feedback from the boys was that they had a great day and enjoyed learning experiences in Science, French, Music, Art, Woodwork, PE and seeing our learning centre/library. They had the opportunity to produce a piece of artwork, a wooden box in woodwork, as well as working in groups to build a paper straw replica of the Eiffel Tower during their French lesson.

College Swimming Selection Carnival
On Tuesday 23 February we finally got the opportunity to run the revised College Swimming Selection Carnival. Sixty-two students registered for events across the six age groups and made their way down to Gosford Pool.
An overcast, windy, and chilly day confronted our swimmers. What the carnival lacked in atmosphere, the boys certainly made up for with their competitive spirit and behaviour on the day. Some fantastic racing took place with several very close heats testing the video replay, which amounted to several discussions from the judges and timekeepers before the results were awarded.
The following Age Champions were crowned on the day:

Age Champion

Under 12
Cooper Smith

Tahj Regattieri
Shanahan

Archie Carpenter

The modified program allowed us some flexibility with the events we ran on the day. Instead of the usual house relays, we decided to run an all-age relay for each House and a ‘Champions of Champions Race’ that was handicapped for each of our 50 m Freestyle Age Group Champions.
While the conditions did not lend themselves to breaking records, the competition between the House Groups was very close. The final outcome saw Doolan (White) being crowned Champions for 2021 in a very close result over Shanahan. The final scores were as follows:
Doolan 265 points
Shanahan 260 points
Knights 233 points
Spillane 204 points
Congratulations to all our winners who will represent the College at the Broken Bay (BBSSSA) Swimming Carnival at SOPAC, Homebush on Thursday 11 March.

Commencement Mass
Be The Best You Can Be.
After a year without a whole school mass due to COVID-19, it was great to be able to gather again. The College Commencement Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony presided over by Father Greg the Parish Priest at St Patrick’s Parish. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Our musicians were thoroughly prepared by our music staff led by Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
Father Greg spoke eloquently on this year’s theme, Be the best you can be. Our College Principal, Mr Bonnici, also spoke about the College Aspirational statement which includes a summary of our future College goals. All who heard these speakers would understand that the men of St Edward's College are expected to put their best effort into all they do. The students were also encouraged to use their gifts and talents to involve themselves in as many activities as possible.

Welcome Year 7
It was so exciting to watch the St Edward's Class of 2026 arriving for their first day. They looked terrific in their new uniforms and sharp haircuts.
A big thank you to parents for embracing our COVID safe protocols and saying goodbye to their sons at the school gate. Everyone was very brave and I only noticed a few tears – from the parents not the boys!
After a few words of welcome from our Principal, Mr Mark Bonnici, the boys received their book packs, met their Home Room teacher and headed off to join the world of high school. A busy day lay ahead, with tours of the school led by senior students and a full day of orientation activities with their Core class. Meeting new friends was a highpoint for many, although lunch time exploring the new canteen, the well-resourced library, the basketball courts and the ovals came a close second. A big welcome to our latest crop of Eddies boys!

Annual Academic Awards Presentation Assembly
On Wednesday 9 December, the College community celebrated our students' academic success at the Annual Awards Assemblies. Due to COVID restrictions the event was live streamed to allow parents to view the presentation.
To receive an award students need to have received nominations from their teachers across the entire year (Semester 1 and Semester 2).
Each Semester all teachers nominate students in their classes who they believe have performed consistently or academically well. The students receiving an 'A' in their courses will automatically receive an Academic nomination.
Students who receive a determined amount of 'consistent effort' nominations across the year will receive an award in that category. Students who receive a determined amount of 'Academic' nominations or A’s across the year will receive that award. Any student receiving A’s in the majority of their courses will receive an Outstanding Academic Award.
During the event, College Special and Memorial Awards were also announced including Edmund Rice Awards. We congratulate all students who received an award, your hard work and dedication to your studies is something to be proud of.

Year 12 Graduation
The 2020 St Edward’s Formal was a resounding success. The students arrived in a diverse array of formal attire from the classic black suit, to the tartan three piece, all the way to a beautiful powder purple suit with matching hair and white sneakers.
The irony of the immaculate outfits the boys wore (with their shirts tucked in and incredible neat haircuts) was that this was not always how they presented in their time at the College. They all looked great on the evening and showed just how far they had come from the innocence of their start in Year 7.
The night was less formal than previous years with minimal speeches, but we had the opportunity to listen to Jackson Robb, Joey Hussein, and Daniel Brazier for a final time. Their speeches were heartfelt and were well received by their peers, a fitting finale to their time at St Edward's.
The marquee with its massive dance floor was a great hit, being well utilised up until our 10 pm curfew. The students and their partners had a great night and genuinely appreciated the efforts the College went to, in hosting the Formal on such a tight timeline for preparation.
I would like to thank all the staff who worked so hard in putting the night together. Cathy Ginsberg, Meagan Armstrong and Julie Connors for their tireless preparations, Mark Bonnici for his vision and drive to host the formal when so many schools cancelled their formals. A big thanks to the staff that worked on the evening; Paul English working with the amazing student helpers, Gerry Summerhayes as MC, and Sarah Evans for taking photos. Thank you to everyone for making the night so successful.

Year 7 Students Complete Sacramental Program
On Friday 13 November, Ashton Hayes, Chase Nicoll, Marlen Wilson, Jette Gooley, Christian Sultana, Sonny Doyle, James Hughes and Saxon Young completed the Sacramental program by receiving their sacraments at St Patrick’s Church. In a beautiful ceremony presided over by Father Greg they were joined by their families and some classmates to make a firm commitment to the Catholic faith. They had been attending special classes in preparation for the Sacramental Mass and the culmination of these classes was to receive the sacraments. During Mass certificates were presented to the students in acknowledgement of this significant achievement. Thanks to the host of teachers and students who help make this event such a special occasion.

Visual Arts Bodies of Work
St Edward's College HSC Visual Arts Bodies of Work.
* Sculpture, Ceramics, Drawing, Photomedia and Graphic Design *
Since 2020 began, the St Edward's HSC Visual Arts students have had some battles to face. Fire, Flood, Storm and COVID-19. During COVID-19 the students lost an average of 8 weeks of face to face teaching time. Working on their practical from home - albeit with a teacher via the internet - was not ideal. There was no personal direction or assistance, certainly not the same as they would have had in class.
Yet, here we stand with 16 completed Visual Arts Bodies of Work. They've done it. Congratulations go to each and every one of the following boys who have overcome everything that life has thrown at them this year and who have produced a Body of Work that is personal, conceptual, inventive and of extremely high quality.

College Athletics Carnival
The College Athletics Carnival is on Tuesday 22 September at Adcock Park.
The College will be conducting our Athletics carnival on Tuesday 22 September at Adcock Park, West Gosford. It is compulsory for all boys to attend and rolls will be taken throughout the day. We need boys to be at Adcock Park by 8.45 am. Due to COVID restrictions, parents are not able to attend this year. Any students wanting to compete in the 1500 m event need to be at the oval ready to race by 8.30 am.
Transport
Normal school buses to and from school will run in the morning/afternoon. Boys from the southern end of the coast will be dropped off near McDonald’s at West Gosford. Students are then required to cross the Central Coast Highway at the pedestrian lights immediately outside McDonalds where a staff member will be stationed to direct them safely across the main road.
All other students traveling by bus are required to catch their normal bus to the College and at 8.30 am they will be directed to make their way to Adcock Park. Staff will be stationed along the way to direct students to the correct and safest crossing points. They will not be permitted to cross at any other points. This is most important for their safety and wellbeing.
Other students may make their own way to the carnival as appropriate. All students requiring afternoon bus transport will return on foot to the College under the close supervision of staff and catch the afternoon school specials as normal.
Uniform
For identification purposes, it is imperative that all St Edward’s students attend the carnival in their College track suit/sports uniform. This is most important so that we can carry out appropriate supervision of all the boys on that day. Senior students who don’t have a sports uniform should wear appropriate sports clothing, possibly in their house colours.
General Directions
As maximum participation is the aim of the day, points will be allocated for every student entering an event.
Boys need to be equally prepared for the weather, especially at this time of the year. There is little protection from the elements at Adcock Park, so boys also need to bring a hat and sun protection cream etc.
The canteen (snacks and drinks only) will be run on the day and is on a cash only basis. There is no facility for use of flexischool accounts or student cards at Adcock Park.
The boys are asked not to bring footballs, basketballs or soccer balls with them as there will be no opportunity to use them on the day. The balls can be a hazard on a day such as this.
It is imperative that no boy brings along large sums of money or valuable audio equipment etc. In these situations, it is impossible for the College to take responsibility for items that go missing on the day.
In the event of obvious inclement weather, boys would need to come to school prepared for the normal Tuesday timetable. A posting will be listed on the College Facebook page and the College App. No announcement means the carnival will go ahead.
COVID Restrictions
Spectators, including parents and carers, are not permitted at sporting events held during school hours. (Current CSNSW guidelines).
Parents dropping-off or picking-up students from the carnival, must:
Do so in the adjacent car park to the Velodrome/Athletics Field
Remain in their car at all times (IN – OUT system, under staff supervision)
NB: Students will be released at the conclusion of the carnival at 2.15 pm
During the carnival:
Students will move from event-to-event in their Age Groups
Staff supervising these Age Groups will carry hand sanitiser for the students to access/use after each event
Event equipment will be wiped down after each Age Group has been completed
At the conclusion of the carnival, students, with Parental/Carer discretion, may:
Be dismissed from Adcock Park to make their own way home
Senior Students may drive
Return on foot and under supervision to the College to catch the usual bus services
The cooperation of boys and their families with these guidelines will ensure that it is an enjoyable day for all in attendance. Under normal circumstances the carnival should conclude by 2.15 pm. No boys will be permitted to leave the oval before that time. I would ask that parents cooperate in not asking for their sons to leave before that time.

Academia Portfolio – Podcast
The St Edward's Podcast is a place where the student body can come together to discuss and debate global, national and school-based issues.
The aim is to provide a voice for every student in our community, and to enable parents, friends, students, and potential future students, to hear what is important to our school community.
What can listeners expect?
Each episode will cover three topics, plus a student spotlight. The topics may deal with global, national, or school-based issues, and the student spotlight will showcase our school leaders, or achievements of members from the student body generally. We hope to enable students to share their achievements in any area of sports, academia, the arts, community contribution etc. to show the diversity and commitment of our students.
The Academia portfolio has worked on developing the St Edward's podcast, and the team consists of members throughout many year groups, working collaboratively together. Currently, the students involved in the podcast are:

Academic Assemblies – Semester 1
The College Community celebrated our students’ hard work and dedication to their studies at the Semester 1 Academic Awards Assemblies on Thursday 6 August.
At the start of the year, all students were encouraged to be the best they can be in their academic, cultural, religious and social justice activities. These assemblies provided the opportunity to acknowledge the many fine young men at St Edward’s who have set themselves learning goals for 2020 and worked hard in achieving these goals. Awards were presented in three categories: Consistent Effort, Academic Achievement and Outstanding Academic Achievement. Students receiving the Consistent Effort award were identified by their teachers as displaying an ongoing commitment to their studies. Students who achieved an Academic Achievement Award are generally performing very well in each of their courses and students receiving an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award are the students who have been nominated by their teachers as achieving the highest grades in most, if not all, of the subjects.

A Day in the Life of St Edward’s
‘I have had a great day and Eddies has the best things to do!’
That was how many of the 204 Year 6 students from 27 primary schools across the Central Coast responded after experiencing a ‘day in the life’ at St Edward's. Science experiments, the Learning Centre, slam dunking in PE, water colour painting, lino printing and scratch board in art, jamming with Year 10 boys in music, playing ‘Simon says’ in French and finally making a wooden box in woodwork were some of the learning experiences that the boys were involved in. Many had such a good time that the boys said they were going to bring their parents back to the Open Day this Saturday to show them the excellent facilities that St Edward's College offers.

67th Annual College Swimming Carnival
What an interesting day we had for our 67th Annual College Swimming Carnival at Woy Woy PLC on Friday 7 February.
The day had several challenges, with torrential rain, power outages, difficulty with communication and announcements and a move back to the old days of whistle starts. Aside from this, our staff made the necessary adjustments and our boys continued to get in and have a go and enjoy the day. A big thank you to all involved as it meant that we got on with things and ran a successful carnival in trying circumstances.

The College Commencement Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony presided over by Father Greg and Deacon Paul from St Patrick’s Parish. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Our musicians were thoroughly prepared by our music staff led by Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
Father Greg spoke eloquently on this year’s theme “Be the best you can be.” Our College Principal, Mr Bonnici also spoke about this topic. All who heard these speakers would understand that the men of St Edward's College are expected to put their best effort into all they do. The students were also encouraged to use their gifts and talents to involve themselves in as many activities as possible.
Thank you to all the parents and friends of the College who were able to attend on the day.

Welcome Year 7
It was exciting to watch Year 7 arrive on their first day!
They looked terrific in their new uniforms and sharp haircuts. After a few words of welcome from our Principal, Mr Mark Bonnici, the boys received their book packs, met their Home Room teacher and headed off to join the world of high school. A busy day lay ahead, with tours of the school led by senior students and a full day of orientation activities with their Core teachers. Meeting new friends was a highpoint for many, although lunch time exploring the new canteen, the well-resourced library the basketball courts and the ovals came a close second. A big welcome to our latest crop of Eddies boys!

Annual Awards Evening
On Thursday 12 December, the College community celebrated our students' academic success at the Annual Awards Evening.
To receive an award at the Annual Awards Evening, students need to have received nominations from their teachers across the entire year (Semester 1 and Semester 2).
During the evening College Special and Memorial Awards were also announced including Edmund Rice Awards. We congratulate all students who received an award on the evening, your hard work and dedication to your studies is something to be proud of.

College Swimming Carnival
Annual College Swimming Carnival
As advertised in the annual calendar, we will be conducting our swimming carnival on Friday 7 February at Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy. The following are some important practical details regarding the carnival.
Transport
Normal school buses will run in the morning / afternoon and students will catch a bus from the College to the pool and back again in the afternoon.
Other students may make their own way to the carnival if appropriate. All boys making their own way to the carnival need to be at the pool by 8.45am, unless they are competing in the 200 m events (see next point).
Any student competing in 200 m events need to be at the pool by 8.30 am at the very latest.
As maximum participation is the aim of the day, points will be allocated for every student entering an event. Any boy who attends the carnival is required to participate by:
Swimming in all events appropriate to his ability level;
Assisting teaching staff in conducting the carnival in some capacity ie: official duties;
It is imperative that students do not bring large sums of money or valuable audio equipment such as Ipods etc. In these situations, it is impossible for the College to take responsibility for items that may go missing.
As the carnival is held indoors, it will be held even in the event of obvious inclement weather.
Boys who live locally or who are being picked up by their parents can leave to go home directly from the pool at the conclusion of the carnival, which should be at 2.30 pm.
The co-operation of boys and their families with these guidelines will ensure that it is an enjoyable day for all in attendance.

Kenya ‘Kesheni’ Immersion
At the end of an exhausting Term 3, Mr Mark Bonnici, Mrs Meagan Armstrong, Joseph Hussein, Daniel Pearce, Jackson Robb, Kai Darwin, Aaron Judd, Aidan Davis, Joshua Armstrong and I all substituted a “once in a lifetime” adventure for our normal school break. This was our school’s annual trip to Kenya to experience the amazing culture and people of this diverse land.Enter leader text here
Kesheni is Swahili for “Stay Awake” and this is the hope for not only our team, but all who we now encounter. That is, to stay awake and aware of the plight of millions of our Kenyan brothers and sisters who live in abject poverty in the Kibera and Makuru slums, both located in Kenya’s capital Nairobi. The good news is, that there is a growing level of hope that strategies in place are making a difference. Our school makes an annual contribution to The Mary Rice Centre, located on the periphery of the Kibera slum. We were privileged to see and experience the great work being done by the locals. The school caters for the most marginalised of children, coming not only from the slum, but also with profound intellectual disabilities. Deep-set cultural views dictate that any family with such children is “cursed”, yet The Mary Rice Centre welcomes them warmly. Teachers, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists cater for these students, mobilising them for employment in the best of cases. All of our hearts were deeply touched to see the love and commitment of the staff in this place. It was doubly heartening to note that construction undertaken in part by the Eddies team of 2018 had been added to, and the facilities, whilst modest by western standards, were serving their purpose in a great way.
Possibly the other most notable force for good that we partnered with on our stay, were the youth workers from the Kibera slum, led by Samuel Karanja who has an existing relationship with St Edward’s from previous immersions. For these youth workers, the mission is very personal. Almost all of them grew up in the slums and have used the power of education to break that cycle within their own lives. They were now role models for the children of Kibera. Our seven fantastic Year 11 students collaborated seamlessly with these youth workers to help and inspire the young ones.
Other places of social justice that we visited were:
The Ruben Centre – an amazing outreach on the edge of the Makuru slum, catering for such needs as maternity, pre and primary school education, micro financing of small businesses, physiotherapy and OT services, workforce skill building and public awareness of corruption within the community. Our students also did some brilliant classroom teaching!
The Women for Women centre – helping young women to have a voice in amongst the abuse and misogyny that has infected the community.
St Stephen’s informal school – a school located inside the Kibera slum. It was a privilege for the students and I to also teach some classes here.
The Advocacy Centre – which advocates for children's rights chiefly through an amazing commitment to educating the community as a whole.
Other experiences on this memorable excursion included:
Visiting the famed Rift Valley
The students being invited to dance on stage in front of an audience at The Kenyan Cultural Centre
Seeing baby elephants at an orphanage
Dining at Carnivores restaurant – enjoying ostrich, crocodile and ox along the way!
Touring the National Park and almost seeing an attack on a baby giraffe by a male lion
I think I speak for all involved in heartily recommending this trip to any prospective participants in the future. It is a perspective challenging, yet fun experience.
Mr David Ritchie

Undies for Kenya
Following the incredible generosity of the College community, we were able to donate women and girls underwear to three different groups in Kenya.
On our visit to the Ruben Centre, located in the Mukuru community, we donated 50 pairs of Modibodi underwear to the health clinic staff who were so pleased to be able to distribute these to women accessing the health clinic for maternity care.
On the day of the Edmund Rice Camp for marginalised youth, the young girls were so excited at the end of the day to be able to choose some brand-new underwear to take home – the chatter was a joy to hear! Then the camp volunteers, camp leaders and cooks were also delighted to be given the opportunity to choose some for themselves and their friends. They were so grateful!
Finally, visiting Women for Women on the final day, Sr Leonida and a wonderful group of women at the centre, were ecstatic to take delivery of over 1400 pairs of underwear to be given directly to the women and girls of the Kibera community. They were so very humbled and grateful to the Eddies community and personally asked us to pass on their deepest gratitude and prayers to all those who donated. It was such an honour to be a part of this wonderful moment and to meet such beautiful people in these organisations, making a difference in the world. In total, we took over 1700 pairs of undies and the impact this donation had on those we presented them to, will forever be in our memories. Thank you.

Good Bye, Good Luck Year 12
Year 12 marked the end of their formal classes with three very special ceremonies this week.
The first of these ceremonies was the Graduation Mass. This was the final time Year 12 students gathered as a group with their parents and family members to celebrate the Eucharist at St Edward’s College. The theme for this mass was Young Men with Purpose, which has been the Year 12 Pastoral Theme for the year.
On Thursday, the St Edward’s Old Boys Union provided a breakfast for the Year 12 students to officially welcome them into the Old Boys fraternity. A whole school academic assembly followed this breakfast, where we acknowledged students for their academic endeavours. First and second place in each course and various special awards in leadership and service were presented and the Dux of the 2019 year is announced. Congratulations to all the award winners for their sustained efforts throughout the HSC Year.
We wish all of Year 12 the very best of luck in their final exams and look forward to seeing them at the HSC End of Year BBQ on Monday 17 December.

Music Department Performance Showcase
Last Monday and Tuesday were very exciting for the Music Department. On Monday we had our Year 11 and 12 Performance Evening with approximately 80 parents, teachers and friends in attendance.
The boys were a touch nervous, but were well supported and exhibited some truly memorable performances which highlighted the skills and hard work which has gone into their pieces so far this year. Year 12, of course, also gained a valuable rehearsal in front of a live audience prior to their exam in a couple of weeks’ time.
As the theatre was already decked out with instruments, amps, lights and smoke machines (courtesy of our amazing Year 11 and 12 Entertainment students), we decided it would be fun to put on a performance showcase the very next day in back to back concerts for our Year 7 and 8 students. Our Year 9 and 10 electives were simply amazing. The selected pieces ranged from Beethoven to Green Day and had our junior students clapping and singing along!
Many thanks to Mrs Emmett (and the Entertainment students) and Mr Droz for their assistance and support with both of these events.

Academic Awards Assembly
The College Community celebrated our students’ hard work and dedication to their studies at the Semester 1 Academic Awards Assemblies on Wednesday 24 July.
At the start of the year, all students were encouraged to be the best they can be in their academic, cultural, religious, social justice and sporting endeavours. These assemblies provided the opportunity to acknowledge the many fine young men at St Edward’s who have set themselves learning goals for 2019 and worked hard in achieving these goals.
Congratulations to all Award recipients.

Visual Arts and Photography Prize from Gosford Private Hospital
Recently, Gosford Private Hospital approached all local high schools to create an idea for an artwork that would decorate a hallway within the grounds of the hospital.
The idea of the decoration was to create a more welcoming and visually interesting corridor for patients travelling between wards or treatment rooms.
St Edward’s boys created the idea of a panelled artwork consisting of five large photographic works around the following theme:
The students of St Edward's see the Coast as having the best of three worlds:
Proximity of beaches and waterways that are central to both the Coast as well as to most residents' lives
A creative community that supports the development of artists such as the budding photographers who will be creating this artwork
The ability to provide a sense of wellness to enhance the recovery of patients who may stay at the Hospital through exposure to the beautiful local landscape.
Hospital patients can feel trapped inside and are unable to fully experience the Central Coast landscape, which could help their recovery. Over the top of the photographs of the landscape, the students will digitally draw white outlines of other features of the coast – such as a symbol of our connection to Edogawa in Japan (and the Gardens at the Regional Art Gallery) through Hokusai’s 'The Great Wave' and symbols of the wildlife surrounding us such as birds and fish. All of this imagery will overlap so viewers of the artwork can see each photograph separately or as a whole piece.
St Edward’s students were chosen as the winners of the competition and have received $1000 towards the production of the artwork and its’ framing.
Stay tuned for the finished artwork to be revealed by the chosen students and their submissions!

Athletics Carnival
A bright, warm sunny day greeted competitors for the College Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 11 June at Adcock Park. The warm weather had continued on from the long weekend and it certainly delivered for the carnival.
Smiling faces from both staff and students graced the morning. Mr Herringe and the Year 12’s had the BBQ cranking, while ‘Snow Cone Gary’ was busy making coffee’s for staff and snow cones for the boys.
The day began with the 1500 m races, into the 200 m races as we waited for all the staff and students to arrive at Adcock Park. On arrival, the carnival proper began with students moving from event to event in their age groups. Participation and having fun, was the order of the day and this was definitely adopted by the boys. The younger age groups participated with much enthusiasm and the senior boys backed this up with colour, costumes and a lot of fun.
Along the way we collected some fantastic individual achievements. With the following records being broken:

Founder’s Day Mass
The College Founder's Day Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's.
The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony. Mass was presided over by Father Greg the Parish Priest of East Gosford. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Students in the band were thoroughly prepared by Mr Toole, Mrs Emmett and Mr Drozdzewski. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
The tradition of recognising long serving staff continued at the conclusion of Mass, with fifteen staff receiving awards for their long years of service to the College. Mr Bonnici made special mention of Mr Drozdzewski for his wonderful 40 years of service at the College.
Thanks to all the parents and friends of the College who were able to attend on the day. A big thank you to all that contributed to this wonderful community celebration.

Easter Liturgy
The tradition of sharing our Holy Week celebration with St Joseph’s to remember the significance of Easter continued this year.
Once again the ERC was packed with students, staff and parents from both Colleges. This was a solemn ceremony of prayer, song, and drama.
The Passion of Christ is followed by witnessing the Stations of the Cross. Our Year 10 students were outstanding in presenting the final days of Jesus. The students from St Joseph’s performed a liturgical dance which was reverent and performed to the highest standard.
The musicians on the day, under the guidance of the music staffs from both Colleges produced brilliant performances and created a great atmosphere in the ERC. Congratulations to all the students who prepared so thoroughly for this wonderful community event.
For the first time a student delivered a personal testimony of their faith. Ashley Palupe’s spoken word piece was outstanding and had a profound impact on the gathered audience.
A final thank you to all who contributed to the most important liturgical event on the Christian calendar especially Mrs Green who did such a wonderful job coordinating the liturgy.

Pushing the Limits at Year 9 Camp
On Wednesday we left around 9.00 to travel to a new camp: Nepean Adventure Centre at Douglas Park.
The boys were extremely excited and praying for fine weather which came to fruition and all activities went ahead. Some of activities included the giant swing, kayaking down the Nepean River, zorb balls and challenge nights in the evenings.
The students were exceptional in their behaviour and attitude and it was a pleasure to spend the three days watching them respond so well to the challenges they faced both individually and as a team. I would like to thank the teachers who assisted me on camp giving up time with their families to participate in helping these boys have such a positive experience.

Fun and Friendship at Year 7 Camp
The Year 7 Camp was filled with lots of high-flying fun and adventure.
The focus of the camp was for everyone to belong and encourage each other, and this was on display throughout our time away. Boys revelled in the challenges of abseiling, flying fox, raft building, archery, bushwalking and even got the chance to try fencing. Fears were conquered and friendships were formed, so all-in-all it was a successful camp. Thank you to the students for their behaviour and to the teachers for their time and service.

The Challenges of Year 8 Camp
Great Aussie Bush Camp, Tea Gardens
A wet but a defining experience for the Year 8 boys, it was evident within this group that a number of students missed the comforts of home, however, credit to them for seeing the three days through and I believe growing in the process. Food was abundant and activities varied, there were high ropes, orienteering, the crate climb, canoeing, abseiling, kayaking, Lost Island and raft building for the boys to hone their skills on. A great three days where Year 8 had the opportunity to step outside their comfort zone.

A Day in the Life of St Edward’s College
‘We had the best day’, was how many of the 240 Year 6 students from 27 primary schools from across the coast responded after spending the day at the College last week.
Science experiments, playing Kahoot in the Learning Centre, slam dunking in PE, painting a bookmark in art, jamming with Year 10 boys in music and finally making a wooden box in woodwork were the learning experiences that the boys were involved in. Many had such a good time that they bought their parents back on Saturday to show them the excellent facilities that St Edward's College offers.

Commencement Mass
Be the best you can be.
The College Commencement Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony presided over by Father Raphael the Parish Priest of Wyoming. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Our musicians were thoroughly prepared by Mr Toole, Mrs Emmett and Mr Droz. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass.
Father Raphael spoke eloquently on this year’s theme “Be the best you can be.” Our College Principal, Mr Bonnici also spoke about this topic. All who heard these speakers would understand that the men of St Edward's College are expected to put their best effort into all they do. The students were also encouraged to use their gifts and talents to involve themselves in as many activities as possible.
Thanks to all the parents and friends of the College who were able to attend on the day.
Mr Beacroft
Director of Mission and Identity

College Swimming Carnival 2019
Friday 8 February saw the running of the 66th St Edward’s College Swimming Carnival at the Peninsula Leisure Centre Woy Woy.
A bright, sunny day greeted our eager swimmers for what turned out to be a fantastic event. The senior boys embraced the colour and fanfare of the carnival, while the younger boys were enthusiastically involved in supporting their house colour.
While the highlight of the day was watching the many talented swimmers we have at the College, it was also an opportunity to see the Year 12 boys embrace their last swimming carnival with colour, costumes and a variety of floatation devices crammed into their one heat approach to each event.
Another year, another record for both Daniel McLoughlin (Doolan) and Jacob Curcio (Shanahan). Daniel set a new record in the Intermediate 200 m Freestyle of 2:04:53, funnily enough breaking Jacob’s previous mark from 2018. In the next race, it was Jacob’s turn to set a new record in the Senior 200 m Freestyle of 2:04:40. Later in the day Daniel also set a record in the Under 15’s, 50 m Backstroke of 30:25 seconds.
The day also saw us crown our 2019 Age Champions:

Many thanks to our fantastic staff for their tireless efforts on the day and their support in ensuring the carnival ran smoothly, thank you also to the many helpers who assisted with the set-up and pack-up of the carnival.
Finally, I must congratulate all the students in attendance on their wonderful behaviour at the carnival. It was fantastic to speak to both the pool and café staff at the end of the day and have each of them comment on the pleasant and respectful behaviour of our boys.
Well done to everyone on a great start to the sporting year.

French Exchange
There are several French students from Lycée Théas in Montauban (Years 10 – 11) who would love to come to St Edward’s for 6 - 8 weeks in June to August this year.
This is a wonderful opportunity to host a French student and then go to France to experience life and school in France. It would only cost you your airfare, insurance and spending money. You do not need to be studying elective French. You also earn Waterford hours.
Available for all students from Year 9 to Year 12.
Please contact Mrs Papeix as soon as possible for more information. Merci!

Service During the Christmas Holidays
One again, the College is proud to report that many boys completed numerous hours of service for others in the recent holiday period. Examples include: senior boys as Edmund Rice Camp leaders, Coast Shelter Gosford, surf clubs, Rural Fire Brigade and many others. Your efforts are valued and appreciated.
Waterford
The Waterford Project, which is a compulsory requirement for St Edward’s students in Years 8 to 11, continues in 2019 for the 20th year. All boys in Years 8 to 10 are required to complete at least 15 hours of meaningful service for others and boys in Year 11 must complete three service activities. Our program is optional for Year 12 students.
Edmund Rice Honours is awarded to any student who achieves 100 hours or more in a year.
Waterford activities for 2019 can be backdated to October 2018 and the program must be completed by the end of Term 3 each year.
We ask that parents please talk with their son/s regularly about Waterford progress.
Why are students asked to complete Waterford service each year?
Justice and compassion are key teachings of Jesus
It is proven to assist a student's personal growth
The program offers students opportunities to explore career options and to enhance their overall education, through awareness
Injustice exists in our world and our role is to ensure our students engage by: Awareness, Advocacy and Action
Edmund Rice schools across Australia challenge all students about issues eg Reconciliation with our First People, Human Rights (eg asylum seekers)
Once again St Edward's College Religious Education teachers will be facilitating the Waterford Project during class time.
Please contact me on 4321 6439 if you have any questions about the Waterford Project or Social Justice at the College.
Mr Pat Dell
Leader of Learning (Social Justice)
