Year 9 Commerce Founder’s Day Project

The day finally arrived for the Year 9 Commerce students to showcase their entrepreneurial talents in the project, “From Five Bucks to Big Bucks.” Founder’s Day provided the perfect opportunity to turn their $5 into more. Throughout the day, a range of activities kept everyone engaged. The boys were selling mixed lollies, raffle tickets, jelly cups, spider drinks, handballs and protein powder and shakers. One creative group had a student dress up in a squid costume, charging a small fee for people to snap a photo with him.

We have 54 students enrolled in Commerce. Each student received a $5 loan from the College. This was spent during our excursion to Erina Fair in Term 2. By the end of Founder’s Day, the boys were expected to not only repay the initial $270 loan but also generate a profit – and they did not disappoint.

Not only did we repay the College, but the boys also earned an additional $436.70 in profit. This money has been used to purchase 42 pairs of period underwear and 9 pairs of regular underwear for women living in the slums of Kenya. At the end of Term 3, Mr Bonnici, along with some of our Year 11 students, will personally deliver these items to the Mission. This contribution will make a significant difference in these women’s lives.

The boys fully embraced the project, showing a strong commitment to transforming simple items into marketable products. Every team sold out, and as their teachers, we could not be prouder of their efforts. Aspiring entrepreneurs in the making!
