The College Founder's Day Mass at St Edward's once again stood out as a special and truly memorable occasion, emblematic of the strong bonds within the College community. The event was graced by numerous distinguished guests, each with a connection to the College spanning many years. It was heartening to witness the presence of former Christian Brothers, Principals, and esteemed members of the EREA community, all coming together to honour the College's legacy. Throughout the ceremony, the students exemplified reverence, respect, and a deep sense of prayerfulness, reflecting the values instilled within them by the College. Under the guidance of Father Vince Casey, who presided over the Mass, the atmosphere was one of solemnity and spiritual significance. A special commendation is owed to the talented musicians, comprising both staff and students, whose performances enriched the Mass with their melodic renditions. The band, meticulously prepared by Mrs Rankin and Mr Toole, showcased their dedication and skill, enhancing the overall ambiance of the ceremony with their harmonious contributions. Heartfelt appreciation extends to all who played a part in this magnificent community celebration. With all the rain, our local Animal Facilities are in need of towels/blankets to keep the animals nice and warm. These guys have it pretty rough already living in cages so anything fluffy and soft you have lying around at home or can purchase, they would really appreciate it (please just make sure they are in good condition)! Please feel free to send the donations in with your son or drop them to the Front Office. Your son will receive an hour towards his Waterford Hours for helping those in need. As a non-profit organisation, So Cares Animal Facility (at Erina and Charmhaven) are also always happy to receive donations of food, litter, toys, bedding and medical supplies. Threatening skies and rain briefly cleared for the latest Clean4shore excursion. Erina Bay just had enough tidal water to allow access, with immediate bulk litter presenting on the tidal sea grass. Food wrappings, hard and soft plastics, plastic bottles, balls and polystyrene all washed into the water from the recent flooding rain and strong winds. What an exciting day it was for the Year 4 students from Catholic schools across the Central Coast who participated in our STEM Robotics Enrichment Day on 4 April! The students embarked on an enlightening journey into the realm of robotics, gaining insights into the life of an engineer. As the day progressed, they found themselves manoeuvring their robots and mastering tasks with the finesse of seasoned professionals. The English faculty have had a busy and memorable start to the year with a range of excursions designed to help students see the real-world context of their studies. I would like to thank students for maintaining high expectations for their learning and their behaviour during these excursions and incursions.   A Deep Dive into Shakespeare with Year 12 Advanced English In a memorable excursion, our Year 12 Advanced English students attended a symposium at the Seymour Centre, exploring Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” presented by the Sport for Jove theatre company. This symposium offered an enriching analysis of one of Shakespeare's most personal creations - a play vibrating with themes of forgiveness, discovery, and self-discovery. Students were treated to live performances juxtaposed with critical discussions, exploring the profound themes of freedom versus slavery, civilization against barbarism, and the eternal tug between revenge and forgiveness. The complexities of these themes were further highlighted through comparisons with Margaret Atwood's “Hag-seed,” providing a contemporary lens to view Shakespeare’s narrative. Inspirational Words with Vuong Pham Our Year 12 Standard English class had the privilege of connecting via Zoom with Vuong Pham, a Brisbane-based poet and educator. Vuong delved into the inspirations and processes behind his poem "Mother," a key text for the HSC. His insights into the personal and cultural significances embedded in the poem deeply resonated with both students and teachers, enriching their understanding and appreciation of the text. Creative Sparks with Will Small Year 11 students, both Standard and Advanced, participated in a dynamic writing workshop and poetry session led by Will Small. As a local writer, filmmaker, and social worker, Will emphasized the importance of risk-taking in writing and the need to overcome self-doubt. His session included thought-provoking poetry aimed at challenging conventional views on masculinity, providing a fresh perspective and inspiring our students to explore their creative boundaries. Shakespearean Journeys for Year 10 Our Year 10 students enjoyed a visit from the Bell Shakespeare Theatre company this week. This engagement immersed them in the diverse world of Shakespearean and contemporary villains. From romances to tragedies, the performance showcased a range of characters and scenes, and offered students a panoramic view of Shakespeare’s genius and his historical context. Engaging Younger Students with Poetry In Term 3, students from Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 will have the opportunity to engage with "Poetry in Action", a traveling theatre group dedicated to bringing poetry to life. This interactive presentation will focus on dramatising poetic techniques and themes, helping students not only to understand but also to appreciate the rhythmic beauty and expressive power of poetry. It's an excellent way for our younger students to connect with literature in a vibrant and impactful manner. Breakfast With Books In its third year running, Breakfast with Books continues to thrive as a haven for young readers at our school. Established by Mrs Titheradge, this unique club offers students a tranquil morning space dedicated to the pleasures of reading and fostering mental wellness. With nearly 40 enthusiastic members now enrolled, the club has truly blossomed. The introduction of memberships this year has added structure and excitement, giving students a sense of belonging and ownership. Parents and students alike have expressed glowing feedback, noting the positive impact on their reading habits and overall well-being. What sets Breakfast with Books apart is its focus on creating a mindful environment. Mrs Titheradge's vision goes beyond mere literacy; it seeks to nurture mental wellness by providing a serene setting for students to engage with literature. This emphasis on mindfulness aligns with contemporary educational priorities that recognize the holistic benefits of reading beyond academic achievement. Looking ahead, the club is venturing into new territory with planned excursions aimed at enriching the reading experience. Exploring literary landmarks or visiting book festivals promises to deepen students' connection to books and the joy of reading. As the Breakfast with Books community grows, it's clear that Mrs Titheradge's initiative has struck a chord. Our students collaborated with peers from two other schools for a full day of exploration at the West Connex Control Center, immersing themselves in the realm of civil engineering. They received a behind-the-scenes tour of the control center's functions, gaining insight into its collaboration with emergency services during crises. The pinnacle of the experience was a hands-on engineering challenge. Guided by real engineers, students constructed spaghetti towers and designed bridges. The boys excelled, building the tallest tower of the day and securing second place in the bridge-building competition. Using only paddle pop sticks and masking tape, they engineered a bridge capable of supporting over 10kg.     [foogallery id="52111"]

Congratulations to these talented students whose items were selected to perform at the 2024 Central Coast Youth in Performing Arts series of concerts to be held at Laycock St Theatre this month. There were a number of items chosen from St Edward's! Well done to the following boys:   Hoi Tin Terrence Ho in Year 8 - solo piano; Logan Atherton in Year 8 - solo piano; Max Taylor in Year 9 - solo guitar, and a Year 12 Band item including Rex Allwood, Leon Towel, Dom Fatone, Kai Maitland, Charlie Jacobsen and Alex Golden.      

After a couple of years away from competition it was great to accompany a group of  surfers to Surfest at Bar Beach to contest the Schools Team Challenge on 14 and 15 March. St Edward’s entered the following 4 teams into the tag team event, Riley Turner, Ryder Kasun, Dylan Hitchenson Kai Tower, Kalani McRea, Nate Saley, Jaxon Burgess Cohen Tower, Ollie Goulding, Xavier Turner Tom Barry, Max English, Finlay Jones Day 1 Sunrise on Thursday greeted us with perfect conditions, 3 to 4 foot waves with a light offshore breeze that continued throughout the day making for a perfect day of competition, however, it was a day of mixed fortunes for our teams. It was a testing format with all three surfers expected to catch a minimum of 2 waves in a 20 minute heat. To their credit each team discussed the conditions, the surfing order and the potential for scoring waves and came up with a plan to execute prior to their heats. For the majority of the heats, the surfers did well to catch their 2 waves each and get back to the beach before the heat buzzer went off. Despite managing a 1st and a 2nd place during day 1, the heat totals were going to make it difficult for our surfers to surf their way into the final on day 2. Day 2 Conditions on Friday had deteriorated significantly. A storm through the night had increased the swell. It was raining, and the wind was howling from the south. The surf was a mess of broken swell and the shore break made the paddle out difficult to negotiate, but that certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Eddy’s crew. All surfers performed well locking in a heat win and two 2nd places but unfortunately not scoring enough overall points to see any of our teams into the final. Congratulations to all the surfers who competed over the 2 days and did St Edward’s proud. Thanks to the family members who come along to support the teams and thank you also to Mr Carpenter and Mr Austin for the early morning starts driving the teams to and from the event. Representative Sport Congratulations to Max Pidgeon in Year 9, who recently attended the NSWCCC Under 15’s AFL selection Championships in Wagga Wagga, along with Rasmus Borg in Year 8. After a string of fantastic performances for the undefeated Northern NSW team, Max gained selection in the NSWCCC team. Max now travels with the team to Albury (3 and 4 June) to contest the NSW All Schools Selection Carnival. 2024 Sport Events Please see below the NSWCCC representative pathway for sports selections for individual entry sport occurring early in Term 1. Applications are Open UAC applications for study at uni in 2025 are now open for domestic students. Details of hundreds of semester 1, 2025 courses offered by UAC’s participating institutions are available on our website. More will be added over the next few months. Students who apply now should log back in to their application in around August to take another look at the courses being offered and review their course preferences. Starting an application: essential info  This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application: Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They'll then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application. Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: We emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students yesterday using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please ask them to call UAC. Also remind them to register a personal email address in their NESA Students Online account. Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2024 Year 12 student, which means they'll be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme. Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one SRS now part of undergraduate application  This year, the Schools Recommendation Scheme application is integrated into the undergraduate application; it is no longer a standalone application. Once students have submitted their undergraduate application a link to the SRS application will appear. It will only take them a minute or so to complete. As only current Year 12 students can apply for SRS, it's important that they enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN in the undergraduate application. If they don't, they won't have access to the SRS application. Taking full-length practice tests under timed conditions is essential to being ready for the official test. A proctored practice exam will help students build testing endurance and give them a real-time snapshot of their testing performance. When: Sunday 5 May 9.00am - 12.00noon AEST Where: Online Who: The digital SAT practice test may be sat by students in year 9, 10, 11 or 12. What: The SAT was redesigned internationally in March 2023 and is now an adaptive digital test. Why: Sitting the digital SAT practice test under timed conditions provides more exposure and familiarity to the test which can be used for admission purposes to many US universities. Even in a test-optional environment, a strong test score may support an application well. Cost: US$20. Registration includes a personalised score report available directly after the test and a 30 minute scheduled one-on-one score review session with a Revolution Prep Adviser who can assess specific strengths and identify areas to focus for improvement.
