Be the best you can be The College Commencement Mass was once again a special day for St Edward's. The students were reverent, respectful and prayerful throughout the ceremony presided over by Father Vince the Parish Priest at Terrigal. Congratulations must go to all our brilliant musicians who performed at Mass. Our musicians were thoroughly prepared by our music staff led by Mrs Rankin and Mr Toole. Their performances added so much to the prayerful atmosphere of the mass. Father Vince spoke eloquently on this year’s theme “Be the best you can be.” Our College Principal, Mr Bonnici, also spoke about the importance of our College values. All who heard these speakers would understand that the men of St Edward's College are expected to put their best effort into all they do. The students were also encouraged to use their gifts and talents to involve themselves in as many activities as possible. On Friday 23 February, our fourth annual Male Connect event was a resounding success, fostering stronger connections among attendees. The evening started with delicious pizza from our school canteen, setting the stage for an engaging and informative presentation by Professor Warburton from Macquarie University, on adolescent brain development and gaming addiction. Wrapping up the event, future aeronautical engineers and pilots showcased their enthusiasm and vigor in a thrilling paper plane competition, vying for the coveted title of king of paper planes. Congratulations to Jack Hardy for clinching first place with an impressive flight of 23.10 meters, followed by Alexander Huber in second place and Keenan Garland in third. None of these enriching experiences would have been possible without the generous support of numerous individuals. Mr Mills and I were fortunate enough to accompany the Prefect group to Oxford Falls for the inaugural Student Leaders Symposium, hosted by St Pius X, Chatswood. This event brought together all the student leaders from the NSW EREA schools and the day was both a reflection and a celebration of the great initiatives that are taking place within our schools. The St Edward’s Prefects shared their stories of leadership and collaborated with others to ensure that the day was a success. Mr Sullivan Year 12 Pastoral Leader  

On Wednesday, 14 February, 187 Year 7 students embarked on their inaugural College camp. The boys had only begun their school journey eight days prior to departure, making their eagerness and readiness to participate commendable. Over the course of three days, the boys encountered a range of weather conditions while engaging in various activities. During tent setup, the heat was intense, raising a few concerns and requiring a few adjustments.  Nonetheless, all students persevered, diligently applying sunscreen and preparing for a packed afternoon of activities. The activities encompassed Abseiling, Flying Fox, Leap of Faith, Burma Bridge, Raft Building, Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, Slingshot, Canoeing, and Orienteering. Witnessing each student overcome personal challenges with determination was truly inspiring. The primary goal of this camp was to foster connections and a sense of belonging within their new year group. I encouraged all students to forge new friendships during the three days, hoping they embraced this opportunity. Year 9 students have enjoyed the beginning of their elective subject, Photography and Digital Media, which focuses on honing photography skills with DSLR manual camera settings. The activities they have been involved in have focused on using our amazing College location to manipulate depth of field in small figure groupings and students have been excited to take action-packed images using photographic methods including panning, frozen motion, and blurred motion.   [foogallery id="50849"]

Senior Class Joint Learning The successful integration of some senior classes from St Joseph's and St Edward's Colleges has brought a more diverse and inclusive learning environment to both schools and their students. Benefits to such a learning environment include expanded academic opportunities, enhanced resources, stronger community bonds, and improved student outcomes. The colleges currently have integrated classes in Earth and Environmental Science, Society and Culture, VET Retail, English Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, Japanese Beginners, Drama, Engineering Studies, Multimedia, Outdoor Recreation and Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation.  

Breakfast With Books: A Fun Start to the Day Breakfast With Books kicked off in Week 5 in Room 57, led by Mrs Titheradge, and offering boys a morning experience combining reading and breakfast. Held every Wednesday morning, this group provides students with an opportunity to enjoy their favourite books while indulging in delicious breakfast treats, including the popular Nutella Overnight Oats. To enhance the organisation and structure of the club, Mrs Titheradge introduced a membership system this year including a membership card and contract. This addition ensures a more formalised approach to participation and facilitates smoother operations. Additionally, new membership openings each term allow for continuous enrolment, welcoming fresh faces regularly. Breakfast With Books fosters a sense of camaraderie and enjoyment among attendees. It serves as a space not only for reading but also for sharing stories, and forming friendships. This dual focus on literature and community creates a welcoming environment where students can connect over their shared love for books. Participation in Breakfast With Books offers numerous benefits for high school boys. Aside from the pleasure of reading and the enjoyment of delicious breakfast offerings, the event provides an opportunity to look after our mental health. Time off devices has been shown to have a positive impact on mood and outlook. Breakfast With Books continues to be a highlight for our boys. Through its inclusive atmosphere and enjoyable activities, the event leaves a lasting impact on participants, enriching their school experience and fostering a love for reading. Information resources for students with disability and their caregivers.   The Australian Government worked with Children and Young People with Disability Australia to co-design information resources to help students with disability and their caregivers understand their rights under the Disability Standards for Education 2005. Representative Sport NSWCCC Under 15’s Cricket Congratulations to Hugh Wheeler who has been invited to attend the Under 15 NSWCCC Cricket selections. Hugh did a wonderful job bowling for our Downie Trophy winning team last week.   NSWCCC Under 15’s Golf Shaylan Bennett was also invited to attend the NSWCCC Open Golf selections. Shaylan, who plays off a 2 handicap at Everglades Golf Club will look to press his claims at Belmont Gold Club. We wish both these boys the very best of luck in their sporting pursuits. College Sport CSBB Under 15 and Opens Touch Football After the cancellation of the CSBB (Broken Bay) Under 15’s and Open Touch Football Championships, a hastily scheduled selection event was organised to select the respective teams for the CSNSW Championships. The event was run in conjunction with the CSBB Girls Championships at Nolan’s Reserve, Manly on Tuesday 27 February. We recently asked our audience some questions about careers in cyber security and signals intelligence, as well as the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), who work in the foreign signals intelligence and cyber security space. 87% of respondents said they had never heard of the Australian Signals Directorate and 91% said they don’t know what the ASD do to protect Australians. However, 35% of people we asked said they would be interested in a career in cyber security or signals intelligence. Additionally, 44% of people said that unique, challenging and rewarding work is the most important thing when choosing a career, more than a competitive salary (24%), broad career paths (11%) and getting real-world experience (21%). Working at ASD ticks all those boxes. As the Australian Government’s cyber experts, ASD uses tech in unexpected ways to help ensure Australia’s national security. Whether it’s in foreign signals intelligence, cyber security or offensive cyber operations, a career at ASD provides so many opportunities for growth. As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, we want to remind you of the importance of ensuring proper supervision when students leave the school premises during school hours. It is crucial for the safety and well-being of our students that they are picked up by a parent or designated caregiver from the front office if they need to leave the school grounds for any reason during the school day. This protocol helps us to maintain a secure environment and ensures that our students are properly supervised at all times. Please be aware that students are not permitted to exit the College grounds and use public transportation to go home without proper supervision. This is in place to safeguard our students and prevent any potential risks or incidents.
