Movember
The Environment Portfolio are running the Movember campaign again this year and are asking students, staff and the community to join or support the Eddies Team – whatever Mo you Grow OR Move for Mental Health, this Movember, you will help to raise funds and awareness for men’s health.
You need to Register under the Movember St Edward’s Team page – see poster below for link or QR Code
Start clean shaven and Grow that Mo (note if any student has not joined the team then their Mo will have to go)
Raise a minimum of $20 for Waterford Hours
Or you can choose to Move for Movember – see website for further details or have a chat with any of the Environment Portfolio leaders – Cohen Crook, David Lusunzi, Leon Towle or Hugh Wilson
Flip the Switch
Climate change is real, and most would have experienced the effects either through the local fires or floods. People may notice plants flowering before they should or fish arriving before they are supposed to because the ocean currents have changed. Cane toads are spreading further south as conditions heat up and Alpine areas are disappearing and will soon be non-existent in Australia as the last ecosystems cling to the highest peaks in Australia for survival.
This term the Environment Portfolio has led its first ever initiative focusing on reducing carbon emissions. The idea was started nearly two years ago and is finally being implemented. Students at assembly this week will introduce a ‘Flip the Switch’ initiative where students and teachers will be encouraged to turn off the lights when they leave the room. Whilst this is only a start it gets people to think about their actions and about how big change comes when a lot of people do small things. Hopefully, this initiative will also get students to flip the switch at home as well and encourage other family members to do the same.
Sometimes students can get overwhelmed with the idea that the ‘problem is too big’ and there is ‘nothing I can do’. This initiative encourages students to take that first step on a long journey to change. Well done to all the prefects both past and present who have helped to make this a reality, the executive for supporting the students on their journey and to Sarah Evans for her work creating the posters.

Year 8 Camp Adventures
The students were well-behaved, and the activities were demanding, a testament to the fact that the boys went to sleep on both nights tired yet satisfied.
Food was abundant; there were seconds and thirds available for those with an appetite. Activities available to the students included surfing, beach sports, kayaking, mega paddling, archery tag, bush walks, and initiatives. For dinner each night, the group was divided into two: one group had hamburgers cooked for them, while the other group cooked their own meals, and Trangia's Spaghetti Bolognese was on the menu. Groups of three and four students worked together under the direction of their camp instructors. The following night, the groups swapped; we have some budding young chefs among our Year 8 students.
The highlight of the camp, however, had to be the intergroup volleyball competition held on the last day, with groups 7 and 13 competing in the final. Group 7 won the final with a score of 21 points to 19, becoming the inaugural champions of the St Edward's Killalea State Park Volleyball Championships.

The North Challenge
St Edward's and St Joseph's collaborate to win the North Challenge!
Congratulations to the St Edward's/St Joseph's team for their triumphant collaboration in winning the North Challenge! After three months of meticulous planning and dedicated efforts to address the issue of Housing Affordability on the Central Coast, they emerged as victors, against other Central Coast schools in the competition.
The team actively participated in six workshops alongside executives from North Construction, gaining insights into the company's operations and procedures. This experience proved invaluable in shaping their own company, which was founded to address the specific problem. Their solution involved the development of affordable, efficient, and sustainable 3D-printed homes for lower-income families.
Their comprehensive proposal encompassed various aspects, including their vision, objectives, company values, expectations, SWOT analysis, SMART goals, GANTT chart, Milestones chart, company direction, organizational structure, elements of workplace culture, employee satisfaction plan, target customer identification, investment and cost estimates, rental solutions, loan and sponsor estimates, feasibility study, 3D-printed house design and associated costs, as well as career opportunities within their business.
In addition to this strategic planning, the team also established a web presence, designed business cards, and successfully produced a handheld 3D-printed house, all according to their specifications.

Industrial Technology Metal
Mr Brown's Stage 6 Industrial Technology Metal HSC Class
It's great to hear that the Year 12 students of Industrial Technology Metal in 2023 put in a lot of effort and dedication into their studies, and their hard work paid off with two of their major projects being nominated for the NSW Shape Exhibition. Congratulations to Thomas Whitmore for his excellent workbench and to Jaycob Foyel for his outstanding BBQ smoker. This achievement is a testament to their talent and the careful planning and organizing that went into the course over the past two years. It's true that some things, like mastering a new course or developing exemplary projects, take time and effort.
The fact that all the students performed well in both practical and theoretical aspects of the course is a clear indication of their commitment and capabilities. Well done to all the students who contributed to the success of the Industrial Technology Metal program in 2023. This is a great example of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.
However, the story does not end there. Over the past 5 years the TAS department has been working closely with a local manufacturing company Crossmuller and they have been kind enough to have our students for work experience and some have gone on to gain employment as apprentices and factory workers. Through fostering this relationship Crossmuller agreed to sponsor our Metalwork with a CNC plasma cutter and now we have the opportunity to develop our student's skills further as we move into an area of designing more artistic projects. Many thanks to Crossmuller for their support of our school and students.

Year 10 Commerce Explore the Sharemarket
Year 10 Commerce – ASX Sharemarket Game 2023
As a component of the Commerce unit on Investing, the Year 10 students investigated various investment avenues aimed at generating returns. To acquire a more practical insight, the students were enrolled in the ASX Sharemarket Game. It provided an opportunity for students to increase their understanding of the sharemarket and how it works. The boys experienced how to buy and sell shares as well as test their investment strategies.
In building their investment portfolio, each syndicate received $50,000 in virtual cash to invest over a 10-week period. The students use live market conditions to assess and refine their skills and knowledge of the market.
Throughout the game, each syndicate engaged in the buying and selling of shares from a pool of over 300 companies listed on the ASX, utilising real-time prices. They incurred brokerage charges for each trade, replicating authentic share market conditions. Additionally, the game expanded its offerings to include exposure to 55 ETFs (exchange traded funds) and 5 LICs (listed investment companies), enabling students to diversify their portfolios.
Over the course of the game, not only did the boys actively engage in the investment process, but they also gained valuable insights into taking risks and navigating the highs and lows inherent in the world of investing. We have some aspiring investors on the horizon. Congratulations to all the boys involved.

CSBB Volleyball Tournament
What a fantastic day at Niagara Park Stadium on 19 October.
This was the inaugural Broken Bay Volleyball tournament for indoor volleyball, replacing the beach volleyball tournament.
We had a tough preparation for the tournament - no net and no court to practice on due to Year 12 farewells and HSC exams. The boys didn’t complain and we made the best of the situation by playing on Oval 1 near the waterfront amongst the trees (tough view). The first time the team played on a court was the first game of the tournament.
The boys were an absolute pleasure to take away. Their camaraderie, team spirit and improvement was impressive. Versatile and adaptable. They received many lovely comments from other staff and the professional photographer. They were so thankful, thoughtful, fun, polite and enthusiastic. Their parents must be doing a great job in raising them!
RESULTS
We won every game but one, the Grand Final. We were only pipped at the post by a more experienced team. DRAMA – Despite breaking his ankle in the first game, Cohen arrived back at the courts from his hospital visit to cheer on the team in the grand final….now that’s commitment (as was his attendance at every trial and training session).
St Edward's defeated MacKillop 32-24
St Edward's defeated St Brigid’s 41-23
St Edward's defeated Mater Maria 44-27
St Edward's defeated St Leo’s 34-30
Semi Final St Edward's defeated Mater Maria 42-27
Grand Final St Edward's Lost to St Leo’s 30-35
Introducing the team:
Eason Zhang (Yr 10) – Most Valuable Player (lethal serve and smash, dead calm, accurate digs/sets).
Year 11
Andrew Hodge – Smiling assassin, improved tremendously throughout the tournament and showed great patience and humility.
Angus Jack – MVP from Late Selection (so glad you made it Angus - superstar).
Cohen Danvers - Worst injury (broke his ankle and tore ligaments – 1 minute into first game and on his 2nd touch of the ball)
Ellis Milson – Proved height is not obstacle time and time again. Best side line dancer.
Finn Palmqvist - Most improved (lucky he heckled Mrs Henderson until she put him in the team – gun!).
Hudson Sky - Most enthusiastic to continue playing after the tournament.
Jesi Wanjohi – Runner Up Most Valuable Player (accurate serve/dig/set, dedicated back up, smart thinker).
Nate Vaughan - Runner up injury and “Can you put me next to Jesi, we’re a good combo” award

Junior Rugby 7’s
The Junior (Year 7 and 8) Rugby Sevens team travelled to Narrabeen to compete in the Broken Bay Competition.
The side had to play five matches in a ‘first past the post’ tournament against quality opposition.
On a hot day it was difficult to keep everyone fresh with injuries and fatigue having a large influence on the team’s performances. Fortunately, each student showed a lot of grit and resilience to win four out of their five games, which meant that they finished second overall.
The team were presented with medals and all represented St Edward’s in an honourable manner. Congratulations to James Boerner who was named as our Player of The Tournament, he has a bright future ahead of him.
Thank you to Mr Foster and Mr Summerhayes for the support and everyone who contributed to such a great day of rugby.

Berg Shield Cricket
A return to classic Australian Summers – our Round 1 and Round 2 fixtures were played in 36 degree temperatures, an outfield barren of grass and an abundance of flies. Just how we like it!
Revised into a 20/20 competition for 2023/24, our first fixture saw us engage St Peter’s Catholic College, Tuggerah oddly enough at Blacktown. Batting first, the team put the hammer down early to set the tone of the day. Isaac Phillips 50, Hugh Wheeler a very quick fire 37 and George Barry 23 set a platform for success, guiding the team to 7/174 from our 20 overs. Our bowlers then took the new ball and proceeded to run through St Peter’s at a steady rate, restricting them to 8/102 from their allotted overs. Hugh Wheeler earned a match best 4/13.
The first up victory progressed us to Round Two where we met St John XXIII Stanhope Gardens. It wasn’t our best bowling performance, with sundries top scoring for our opposition as they were rolled for just 72 runs. In a display of dominance, Hayden Fearnley (29) and Isaac Phillips (40) made sure of a quick victory, securing the winning runs inside the seventh over.
The team now moves forward to Round 3 later in the term.

UAC Update
As Term 4 begins we see another group of students start their final exams before embarking on new endeavours. In only a few short weeks they will receive their HSC results, and many will find out if they've made it into that highly competitive uni degree of their dreams.
Before then, of course, we will be making Schools Recommendation Scheme offers on 10 November, so please remind students to lock in their SRS course preferences before the 3 November deadline.
Applications
Almost 59,000 undergraduate applications were submitted before the 29 September early bird application fee deadline. Applications are still open; however, students will now be paying the standard fee.
A common question from students who submitted their application by the early bird deadline but haven't yet made their payment is whether or not they will have to pay a higher fee. The answer is no. As long as they submitted their application by 29 September, the fee will stay at $78.
Statistics
It's always interesting to check the most popular course preferences at the early bird closing date. This year, the top three first preferences at 29 September were:
Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine – full-time at UNSW
Doctor of Medicine – full-time at Western Sydney University, Campbelltown campus/Charles Sturt University, Orange campus
Bachelor of Business – full-time at University of Technology Sydney, City.
Welcome class of 2024
Although we have not quite said our farewells to the class of 2023, I would like to welcome the class of 2024! We've put together a short presentation on the fundamentals of university admissions, which can be shared with your new Year 12 students.

Parent Ideas – The Power of Sorry
Our teenagers constantly challenge us and make us question our role as parents.
At times we can find ourselves responding to conflict or an argument that we later regret, after the heat of the moment has passed. It happens to everyone, and hopefully it helps guide us towards a different response the next time an argument occurs (it may take a few goes).
Maggie Dent, in her book “From Boys to Men” writes about the importance of talking to your child after an argument, and modelling the behaviour you would like to see from your son:
The Power of Sorry
There is no question that there are no perfect human beings on our planet. Of course, there will be times that we yell, misinterpret our children, misunderstand what they want and generally bugger up. The old male-code told us that men don’t apologise, it’s a sign of weakness, but one of the mot powerful things we can teach our boys is that when we make mistakes, we own up to that mistake and we apologise if need be. This shows them that this is the right thing to do. We need to teach our boys that saying sorry when we really mean it is a sign of courage and strength, not the opposite. It is also about taking responsibility for your actions, which is important for boys to learn. Our boys need to see the men in their lives - particularly their dads – apologise.
